The daylight was starting to fade, Elena found herself in the car with Elijah once again, driving for what seemed like days but in reality, was only a couple of hours. Pennsylvania was beautiful if you stayed away from the eery vampire hang-outs.

"So, where is this castle anyway?" She asked, as her eyes turned to look at Elijah, his concentration on the road. His mind seemed to be elsewhere, as it took him a few seconds to reply, "Are you worried about this demon?"

"It's high up in the forest, hidden behind magic, only supernatural beings can enter." He responded vaguely, he really was distracted, his next answer even vaguer, "I'm not worried."

She stared at him for a long moment, taking in his body language; he was stiff, unreachable, she knew there was something concerning him.

"Elijah, it seems like we're going to be spending a lot of time together for a long time, if you can't be honest with me about what's on your mind, especially when we're in danger, how are we ever going to get along?" She was blunt but the concern in her voice gave her courage away.

His gaze flickered over to hers for a long moment, he looked deep into her eyes and saw an emotion he did not recognize, something he could confuse for actually care. He wiped this from his mind almost instantaneously and averted his eyes back to the road.

"It's not worry, Elena, I'm being cautious, the demon king we are seeking out is extremely powerful, he could be aware of myself and my family plotting against him already and could very well be near. I want to keep you and my family safe," His voice unbroken and very elegant as he spoke, he was flawless, "And as for the castle, It was built many centuries ago by the descendants of the monks my siblings are going to interrogate; it was overtaken by the demon king for a while when he was much less powerful; there ancestors reclaimed it and protected it with magic. Only supernatural beings with good intent can enter, I like to think that killing the demon king is good intent so we shouldn't run into any trouble."

Shouldn't being the key word, thought Elena

She sat in silence for a long minute, processing everything he just said; starting with how he wanted to keep her safe her heart pounded ever so slightly heavier at those words, she really did respect how he only wanted to protect those around him.

"I know you'll keep us safe and I may only be a fragile human but I've got your back," She smirked amusingly before a slight giggle escaped. Elijah laughed too, not because he knew she couldn't but because a thought like that could cross her mind in the first place, "And if he does know we're here, we'll handle it, even if that does mean running in the opposite direction."

They both laughed, the mood lightened - all Elena wanted.

"Thank you, Elena, your faith in me is surprising." He responded.

"Like I said, we're going to be spending a lot of time together for a long time, we have to be able to get along," She smiled kindly at him, they're gazing meeting, her heart pounding, his too match. It was all very overwhelming for her.

A few minutes later, Elijah turned onto a hidden dirt path, shrouded by trees and bushes; the road was bumpy and the ground damp from the rain earlier in the day, it was even darker under the cover of all the trees.

Elijah suddenly stopped and swerved slightly due to the swampy type ground.

"We're here," He stopped the car, pulled out the keys and exited the car. He used his vampire speed to open Elena's door and help her out, he held onto her arm before she slipped in the mud, "Be careful, the terrain will be rough. There's a short walk over that hill, I won't be able to drive over it."

Elena nodded her head and clung to his arm before they took off; she was terrified, nothing good could ever come from being in a hidden forest in the depths of Pennsylvaniawith an original vampire who has betrayed her several times and in search for a demon king.

If it wasn't for Elijah holding her, she would be a hot mess

As they neared the castle, Elena started to feel a magical energy surrounding her, it only grew stronger the closer they got, it was making her feel powerful, like she could do anything.

Was that an illusion?

Her train of thought broken when Elijah came to a sudden stop, his arm now wrapped around her waist. "It's straight ahead. The Petrova bloodline will keep you safe as you pass through the magic surrounding it. Are you ready?"

She swallowed a lump in her throat and nodded her head slightly, she leaned more into him without even realising it, his grip of her becoming tighter the more he wanted to keep her near and safe.

"Let's do this."
