Elijah held Elena near as they took the few footsteps needed to pass through the magical barrier; it felt like something literally passing through her entire body, it felt as though it could enter her mind and read her thoughts, it was powerful. She took a deep breath once she had came through on the other side, taking a minute to compose herself, the dizziness left her and she felt normal again.
"At least we have good intent," Elijah smirked.
Elena had only just fully realised that his arm was still wrapped around her waist, she was so close to him she could feel his breath on her cheek; a surge of heat rushed through her entire body, her gaze met his and they stared intently at each other, Elena seeing only the good in his eyes. Everytime she was near him, it felt as though her heart could rip through her chest it pounded that hard. What did it all mean?
She was confused to say the least.
"Maybe we should head to the castle, we've come this far," She finally said.
Elijah obliged and released his grip of her, they still stayed close regardless. They began walking towards a large, stone staircase leading up to the entrance, the door was large. The castle itself looked to be in perfect condition considering how long it had stood; it was clean looking, the windows intact, the grounds maintained. Was this all magic?
Even though the situation they where in was dangerous and life threatening, she couldn't stop thinking about how she felt when Elijah was near her, the feel of his arm around her, how she couldn't stop wanting him near her now.
"Elena?"
Once again, she was snapped back to reality, "Yeah?"
"Focus," He said, seeming confused about how she could be so distracted right now, "What are you thinking about?"
That heavy lump in her throat had returned again, she couldn't actually tell him the truth, "Just processing all this."
He didn't believe her.
"We'll talk about what can be more important than this later. For now, you have to focus. Anything can happen here." Once again, his voice perfect and strong.
"You're right, I'm sorry, let's go in." She nodded her head as Elijah pushed open the doors, revealing an entrance hall; it was elegant, the entire castle seemed to light up as soon as the door was opened, there was a velvet red carpet that stretched across the floor and took them to the top of a staircase. All things considered, this castle was beautiful.
"Magic, huh?" She asked, surprised by what she had actually entered.
"What were you expecting? Dark, creepy rooms, rain and thunder, warlocks on every corner?" He smirked amusingly.
Oh how she was starting to love that smirk.
"Well, yeah." She shrugged, yet she felt like the crazy one expecting something like from a horror movie.
"The monks still maintain the magic on the castle; it keeps it well preserved, you needn't worry, Elena." Elijah reassured.
"I should probably stop watching so many movies." She laughed, he returned her amusement. "So, where do we go now?"
"I would usually suggest the library first, the collection is extremely vast and rare but the monks spent many centuries researching and collecting as much information as they could about the demon king, this information would not be left so unprotected, so I'm assuming it will be hidden. This castle is full of magic, it's basically alive, it knows we're here and why we are, it may not want that information to be given so freely."
"Great," She said, the sarcasm apparent in her tone of voice, "So where do we start?"
"There may be a secret collection the elder monks may have kept in there quarters, that would be my best guess to start with."
They ascended the grand staircase at the end of the foyer and began there search; Elena felt strange, like something was following her but every time she turned or looked around, she saw nothing, not a speck of dust in sight, never mind an enemy.
The feeling only grew stronger, fear was starting to overcome her, she was on high alert, when she suddenly heard a low voice resonate in her mind,
"In the depths of the castle lies the information you seek." It spoke.
She gasped loudly and spun around, looking for the body attached to the voice but nothing.
Elijah stopped next to her and placed his hand on her arm, "Elena, what is it? Are you alright?"
She couldn't speak for a minute whilst she tried to compose herself, she felt frantic trying to find what spoke to her and what it meant.
"In the depths of the castle lies the information," She repeated to Elijah, her voice uneven and panicked. "Someone spoke that to me in my mind. What does it mean"
Elijah looked at her in confusion, how could someone have spoke that to her and why?c
"You said the castle is alive, right?" Elena said before Elijah had the chance to respond, "What if it wants us to kill the demon king? Maybe it's trying to help."
"A castle can't speak, Elena." His confusion at its height.
"I know that but the magic that protects this castle comes from very alive and powerful monks, they could know we're here and sent me a message telepathically," She suggested, "It wouldn't be the craziest thing that's happened to me."
Elijah was unsure but he had no other suggestions.
"If the voice said the depths of the castle, I'm guessing there's a basement." Elijah said, she nodded her head in agreement and they both headed towards the staircase and back into the foyer. They followed the red carpet to the top of the staircase that lead down to the basement, Elena was suddenly very nervous, it seemed darker and less elegant than the rest of the castle.
The staircase led to an old wooden door with a single metal handle in the centre, Elijah grasped it and turned it, the door creaked open and revealed a long, dimly lit corridor. He didn't like the look of this. They continued on anyway, Elijah remained close to Elena, walking slightly in front of her as if ready to pounce on anything that neared her.
At the end of the corridor was another wooden door with the same handle, they looked at each other briefly before opening the door; it was a small round room with a single bed in the centre, a desk and chair and one trunk resting next to it.
"This is very strange," Elijah stated before entering the room first, he glanced around expecting something to happen but nothing did, he waved his hand at Elena, gesturing for her to enter and headed straight for the trunk. He knelt down and lifted the lid, revealing only a single book, a smaller box and what appeared to be a talisman, he took everything into his hands and lay them on the desk. "This must be all the information they have on the demon king."
He opened the book, the first page confirmed his suspicions.
It read:
"If you are reading this book, then we entrust this information to you.
We do not give this information lightly, the magic in this castle saw your intentions and thought them to be pure.
You would have been met with a fate worse than death if this was attempted to be stolen.
Use this wisely.
If you seek to kill the demon king, you have no easy task ahead of you.
These weapons will aid you."
"We have what we came for, let's leave before the castle changes it mind." A scared Elena suggested.
Elijah closed the book, put the small box and talisman in his blazer pockets and picked up the book, "You're right, stay close."
Elena obliged and followed him out the room and back through the corridor, they ran up the stairs, through the foyer and straight out of the castle. She took in a deep breath of fresh air and shook off all her nerves, thankful they made it through the castle alive, she followed Elijah down the stone staircase and back through the magical barrier.
"Now we just have the swampy walk back to the car to get through." A nervous and tired chuckle escaped her lips, Elijah seemed to feel the same about the situation.
Once they had completed the walk, they expected to return to the car but it was nowhere to be seen.
"Are you sure we came the right way?" Elena was becoming nervous again.
"Yes, I remembered exactly the way we came and I parked between those two trees." Elijah explained, his demeanour changing by the minute, his survival instincts kicking in and the urge to protect Elena.
There was a rustling behind the bushes behind them, they both turned abruptly only to see nothing but darkness and the forest.
"Elena, stay behind me, there's something her-"
His sentence was cut short by a sudden blast of energy hurling them both back onto the ground with a loud thud, Elijah was back on his feet within a second, helping Elena up in the process; he stood in front of her, ready to attack.
"I'm going to need that book," A figure emerged from the darkness, a male warlock, Elijah presumed it was one of the witch kings followers. He was wearing a red hooded robe that masked his face, his hands joined in prayer, "And anything else you obtained from the castle."
3 more warlocks appeared around him; they where suddenly joining hands and speaking in a language neither of them had heard before, the skies where changing above them and clouds where nearing, they where going darker and a loud clap of thunder rumbled from them. Elijah had no choice but to swing Elena into his arms and cradle her, running as fast he could away from the warlocks. He spoke no words and sped off through the forest, there where sudden bolts of lightening trying to chase them but his vampiric speed was quicker.
They made it out of the forest and back onto a main road; the lightening had stopped and the clouds had returned to normal. Elijah kept going until they returned to the church to wait for his siblings.
He placed Elena back onto her feet and without thought, his hands met her face and he scanned her over, "Are you okay?"
"Yes," She placed her hands over his and closed her eyes for a long moment, "Thanks to you."
"I shouldn't have agreed to put you in that situation in the first place," He stared into her eyes, the regret apparent in his tone of voice.
"Elijah, I chose to be here, I chose to follow you into that castle and I chose to trust you, this isn't your fault." She reassured him, a small smile appeared on his lips.
For a brief moment, Elijah looked at her lips, contemplating kissing her but deep down, he knew he couldn't, he didn't even understand we're these urges where coming from. What was happening? What would Elena think of these feelings?
They both lowered there hands but continued to gaze into each others eye for a moment. Neither of them could pursue these thoughts and feelings they where having, they didn't know if they where real.
"I'm glad you chose to be here." He spoke, his voice slightly breaking with emotion.
Suddenly, the doors to the church flew open, ending there moment; they turned to look and there stood Klaus, Rebekah and Kol.
"So brother, what did I miss?" He smirked.
