Elena had spent most of the day in the car with Klaus, mainly in complete silence, she had no idea how to form a conversation with the original vampire who had tried to kill her on several occasions; she wished more than anything that she could forget the past and move on, it would seem she was going to be spending a good portion of her life with him, she shouldn't be bitter..
Unless the plan she formed with Elijah back in the house was too work but it wasn't time for that yet.
"What's on your mind, Elena?" Klaus said, without any care or compassion in his voice, "You have been silent this entire ride, even I'm starting to hate the mind numbing silence."
"I'm sorry, just distracted," She spoke as kindly as she possibly could, there was no need for an argument to start, "I'm thinking about the monks and what's going to happen when we eventually get there."
"I know the journey is quite tedious but we're not far now," He reassured, "And nothing is going to happen, they wouldn't dare threaten you or me, I will rip there hearts out through there throats."
"I'm beginning to understand why they didn't see your intentions as honourable," She spoke sarcastically, shooting a small smirk at him.
He responded in a completely unexpected way to her, he actually laughed, "Well, it's true. Maybe this way, they'll see my intentions, no matter how violent they may be, as a need to protect you, that's honourable."
"Maybe," She shrugged, "Unless they know your only reason for protecting me is for my blood."
"Still a need to protect you, a good intention nonetheless, regardless of reasoning."
They both chuckled slightly, it was nice to know she could laugh about this even a little bit, no matter how painful the actual reality is.
"Hold on a minute," She said, her lips parted slightly in disbelief, "Are we... Actually getting along?"
"I dare to say it but I believe we are!" He exclaimed, an amused smirk forming on his lips, "You're not so bad when you're not with those annoying Salvatore's, you actually have a personality I can relate too."
"I get that," She agreed, "And you're not so bad when you're not threatening to kill everyone I love."
"See? We'll be great friends." He spoke sarcastically.
The end of the car ride took a turn for the better, something she wasn't expecting in the slightest; as much as she wanted to get along for the sake of herself and Elijah, she couldn't stop thinking about how much she missed him and what Klaus would do if he knew what they where actually planning.
"We're here," He pulled up in front a monastery, it looked like it had stood there for a long time but it's beauty still intact; much like the castle, it was hidden by magic, only supernatural beings with good intentions can enter.
They both stepped out of the car and stood beside each other for a long moment. "Do you think this will work?"
"It better," He said, in response to Elena.
She took a deep breath before stepping towards the barrier, Klaus by her side; she felt the energy pass through her body again, the same way it had reached her in the castle, it was overwhelming, they both neared it and stepped through.
When Elena passed through, she didn't realise for a few moments that only she had been successful, Klaus hadn't passed through, now she was even more nervous.
"Miss Gilbert?" She turned her gaze from the barrier and spun on her heel, revealing 3 men dressed in brown hooded robes, his voice sounded like he was an older man.
"Yes?" She spoke, as confidently and as sternly as she could; she wasn't coming across as weak.
"We're very sorry, we couldn't allow your.. Friend to pass through, he is evil," He clarified, she couldn't help but shrug her shoulders and nod in agreement, "We know why you're here, you need the location of the demon king."
"Yes! We need to stop him."
"We will give you this information but first, you must come inside and sit with us, you're life is in grave danger."
Elena's lips partly slightly, a small breath exhaling from her lips at the words he spoke, fear now erupting from her very core.
"Follow me."
She nodded and walked behind them. They lead her into the main part of the temple where they all sat in the centre of the room, they offered her a mug of tea, she felt obliged to take it, almost like she was being tested; she took a small sip and left it in her hands.
"250 years ago, our ancestors tried to stop the demon king; he was performing a ritual to die and be risen again, every monk was a trained warrior, fluent in the art of combat, we enlisted the aid of the Bennett coven, there magic was needed to strength our cause but sadly, we failed, his followers where too many and too strong, they hunted us all down save a few, they went on to study and watch the demon king, they wrote a book and created a weapon strong enough to kill him; he's spent all these years gaining the power he needs to unleash hell on earth, he returned several months ago and has remained in the shadows, waiting for the right time to perform the spell."
Elena took a minute to memorise and process all the information given to her. She was speechless.
"The one last piece to our fight against the demon king was your bloodline."
She was getting pretty tired of hearing that.
"The Bennett witches used the blood of your Petrova ancestor and bound it to the talisman; if we where to be successful in killing him, the talisman would ensure he would remain dead. The demon king knows this, you'll be the first person he will want to find, you are the only thing stopping him from resurrecting himself."
"All I have to do is use this talisman and once he's dead, he'll stay that way?"
"Yes. A spell will need to be performed with the talisman and then it will need to be destroyed by holy fire."
Elena nodded her head, taking in all the information given to her, "When is the right time for the spell to be performed? Where will he be?"
"London, 1 week from now during the full moon."
"Thank you for your help."
"Please, tread carefully, you and the original vampires you are travelling with are our only hope in finally being rid of the plague that is the demon king, none of us can rest until he is vanquished."
"You have my word, we will do everything we can to end this once and for all." They all bowed there heads at her words.
They all stood from the ground; the monks lead her back to the exit and wished her luck before allowing her to depart.
Once she stepped through the barrier, she found an enraged Klaus banging and trying to destroy the barrier.
"Did they hurt you?" He said, rushing towards her to scan her over, "I'll end them all."
"No, I'm fine," She smiled at him, kind of touched by his concern.
"I've just got off the phone with Elijah, I know where we have to go."
"London." She said, before he had the chance to finish.
"Yes! Did they tell you that?" He was surprised that she knew.
"Better question, how did Elijah know?" She crossed her arms, her brows furrowed and her confusion at it's highest.
"Looks like the cat is out of the bag; Elijah went to Mystic Falls to see the Bennett witch, the book can only be read by her, her ancestors spelled it that way."
"What?" She shouted, probably a bit too loud, "You both planned this behind my back? How could you? I could have went."
"I needed you here, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to get the information we needed."
She scoffed, "Just as I thought I could see something in you that isn't entirely monstrous, someone I could actually get along with, you're still scheming behind my back."
She stormed off away from him, making her way back to the car and climbing in.
Klaus was actually surprised at her reaction; normally he could care less about what anyone thought of him but with Elena, it seemed to bother him that she was angry at him; he didn't like what she was doing to him and shook it off, returning to the car and beginning the drive back.
"We have to meet Elijah tonight at the church, we have much to discuss."
For once, she wasn't looking forward to seeing him; he knew how much it would have meant to her to see her family again, even if it was only temporarily and for him to agree to this has deeply upset her.
"Fine." She spat at him, not interested at all in speaking with him.
"I understand that you're angry with us, it was in your best interest." He admitted.
"How so?" She shifted her body on the seat to face him. "This had nothing to do with me, only your selfish agenda."
"Well, since we're on topic of this, I agreed to allow you to rest for 2 days in return for your blood, when I learnt that Bonnie had the information we needed, I didn't want you to return in case you tried to entertain the idea of staying there and plotting against me."
"How many times will I have to tell you that I'm not going anywhere? I made my choice!" She was raising her voice at this point, tired of hearing his paranoia, "I'm staying with you and Elijah, even Rebekah and Kol if I have too. Seeing my family would have just been nice, no matter how temporary. For this to work, you have to trust me, Klaus."
Her words hit him like a tonne of bricks, his whole demeanour softened, "Do you trust me?"
"As much as I'm going to regret saying this," She paused, another breath escaping her lips as she said the one word she shouldn't, "Yes."
"Maybe you're wrong to do so."
"I probably am but I do and it's not because of our deal, it's because I want too, somewhere beneath this monster facade you have is someone I can trust and believe when they say they're going to protect me. Look at everything that's happening with the demon king, you don't have to do any of this but you still are, you may have the wrong way of going about it but you're intentions are good, the monks failed to see that."
"Elena," He turned to look at her for a brief second, searching for any reason he could to believe she's lying but nothing, "I'm a lost cause."
"No-one is a lost cause, Klaus, not even you."
His chest began to warm slightly at her words, he didn't like it and he had never known it, actual sincerity. Elena was pure and maybe he needed that in his life.
"I guess I'll have to trust you too then." He said.
"I guess so," They both smiled kindly at each other, Elena shook her head and peered her head around her seat and looked at the back, taking a medical supply kit that Klaus had obtained a few days ago, "So, pull over and just take my blood already so we can work on our trust issues towards each other and just get through this drive as painlessly as possible."
Klaus laughed slightly, she hated to admit it to herself but this version of him he was allowing her to see wasn't all that bad, she was actually enjoying him, she couldn't help but smile at him.
