There had been nothing but silence between Elijah and Elena since they returned home from the hospital, they where both shocked and scared; not only was it impossible for a vampire to conceive, the fact that they where going to have a baby at all was something to be scared off in the first place.

Elena was lying down on the sofa, wrapped up in a blanket and staring into the fire opposite her; her mind was racing, she couldn't even imagine having a baby in the midst of all the drama in her, there was always someone out to get her and her family and there didn't even feel like there was a safe place on earth to raise it.

She couldn't help but picture some of the good things that would go along with it too; she'd have a child with the man she loves, they could start there life together and they'd have the one thing that would love them unconditionally.

Even though she was meant to rest, she stood from the sofa and walked through the mansion to the backdoor, leading out into the garden where Elijah had sat since they returned.

"You're supposed to be resting, Elena," Elijah quickly came to her side and helped her to the table and chairs placed on the deck.

"I've been resting for hours, now we need to talk," She exclaimed, before taking a seat on one of the chairs.

"About what?" He asked, his gaze turning from her and back onto the garden.

"The weather," She spoke sarcastically, her patience wearing thin with him; Elijah just rolled his eyes slightly, "What do you think?"

"I can't talk it,"

"Why?"

"I don't know what is happening to you and why," Elijah took a seat next to her, his head dipped slightly, "Whatever this thing inside you is it's already making you weaker, I've never seen you as ill as you where before."

"That's just being pregnant in general, Elijah, every woman goes through nausea and vomiting spells, it only happened because I hadn't eaten or drank anything all day, if I had known I was pregnant, I wouldn't have done that," She tried to explain reassuringly but he wasn't responding well to it.

"What if this thing-"

"Will you stop calling our baby a 'thing' please?" She spat, any remnants of patience completely gone at this point, "I can't make you be happy about this, even I'm still processing and I'm confused as hell but she's our baby, we made her and regardless of how we did it, it happened."

"She?" Elijah questioned, "You couldn't possibly no that."

Elena shrugged her shoulders slightly as she looked down at her stomach, her hand was instinctively placed over it, she didn't even realise she was doing it half the time, "She fee'l like a girl to me."

"A daughter..." Elijah spoke under his breath, the smallest of smiles appearing on the corner of his lip, "A baby."

"Yes, my love, a baby," She reached for his hand and placed it over her stomach, he was nervous at first but came to embrace it, "There's a baby in there, our baby."

He didn't speak for a while and just left his hand on her stomach, he couldn't fathom any of this and what it meant for them; he too had the same fears as Elena, how could they raise a child when the world seems to be out to get them?

"I'm glad we talked," He smiled before placing a soft kiss on her forehead, "Just one more matter you're not going to like."

"What?" There goes that patience and reason again.

"We need to tell everyone tonight, I have to know how this happened and what's going to happen to you; maybe once I know, I can get past this fear of you being hurt by it."

Elena reluctantly agreed; she had already took her phone out of her dressing gown pocket and sent a group text to Klaus, Rebekah and Bonnie, she only typed 911 - there code for emergency.

Within half an hour, they had all arrived; Klaus and Rebekah where there in minutes but Bonnie took a bit longer, she didn't have the benefit of vampire speed.

They where all sat in the living room once again; Elena was sat on the couch with Bonnie next to her, the originals all stood on there feet.

"So, now that we're all here, what's this emergency?" Klaus asked, each and every one of them had a confused expression plastered on there face.

"Everything okay with you, Elena?" Asked Bonnie, after her recent hospital trip, she was worried about her best friend.

"I'm fine, don't worry about that," She paused for a long moment before looking at Elijah, he nodded his head in response, "We weren't completely honest with you before when we where in the hospital; I didn't just have food poisoning, there's something else."

"Oh no, Elena, what is it?" Asked Rebekah, before she used her speed to sit next to her, her arm wrapped around her.

"Well, I'm pregnant."

"What?" They all exclaimed at the same time, just the reaction she expected.

"This isn't possible," Klaus spoke, "Vampires can't procreate."

"Elena, what?" The only words Bonnie could put together, her shock apparent on her facial expressions.

"Are you sure?" Rebekah asked.

"Yes, we're sure, we had an ultrasound and tests done, there is definitely a baby in there," Elena paused for a second to look at them all, there expressions hadn't changed yet, still shock and confusion, "And that's why we're telling you tonight, we need to know how this happened."

"Oh no," Bonnie looked down for a second, her hand pressed against her forehead, "This is my fault."

She stood from the couch and began pacing up and down slowly as she thought more in depth about it, nothing else would make sense, "Elijah was human."

And just like that, the penny dropped for them all and there faces became more shocked and confused.

"The spell I cast," She shook her head slightly before returning to her best friend, "Elena, I'm so sorry."

Elena just looked up at Elijah, he was frozen; when he was human, he didn't think this could still happen but it does make sense.

"So, is our baby human?" She asked.

"I'm not sure," She hated that this was her fault, "Magic is tricky, it's hard to know; even though Elijah was temporarily human, at his core he is a vampire. Magic is the heart and soul of this earth, it always finds a way of correcting it's little faults, the spell shouldn't have backfired like that so even though this has happened, it's one of natures loopholes, it still could be part vampire. Elijah's blood reverted back to vampire, this could have happened to the blood within your child."

Elena didn't know what to say at this point, she hated not knowing, especially now it concerns a child, her child.

"Is there anyone who would no more about this?" Asked Elijah, finally speaking after his hour long silence.

"Maybe," Bonnie thought harder, "This would have to be a witch that has seen or at least been told of another baby being created through a vampire and a human, I can't be certain one even exists. "

"Where can we find a witch that powerful?" Elijah responded.

"I'm not too sure, I'll make some calls and find out, I think I may know one witch who will know."

"Thank you," Elijah spoke, "There's one final thing that isn't making sense to me, you said that this happened during my time as a human, correct?"

"Yes," Bonnie responded before glancing over to Elena, wondering where this was going.

"Well, that was 2 weeks ago, the doctor said Elena is 8 weeks pregnant."

"Wait, he's right, that's true," Elena agreed, confused as ever.

"Then that must mean your child is half vampire and growing at an increased rate," Bonnie's only explanation.

"Part vampire.." Elena spoke under her breath before she stood from the sofa and walked towards the fireplace, once again staring into the flames, "How can my baby be part vampire if we where both human at the time? How is that fair?"

Her patience had gone, her usually calm and collected self had followed and all that was left was shock, confusion, fear and slight rage; at this moment in time, she couldn't control her emotions.

"Elijah was never supposed to be human, Elena," Bonnie stood from the couch and walked towards her best friend, she placed her hand on her shoulder and tried to reassure her but she didn't want that, she just moved away from everyone and stood towards the other end of the room, just pacing slightly, "This pregnancy shouldn't have happened but once you create life, you can't take that back, this was the only way to restore the balance, by making Elijah, every part of him and every drop of blood, a vampire again, your baby too."

"It doesn't matter what your baby is, she'll still have whole lot of human in her, she's not just from Elijah, she's from you too and your the very definition of human, Elena, don't be concerned for her and her wellbeing as a part vampire, the parts she gets from you will keep it in check." Klaus spoke and oddly enough, his words brought a lot of reassurance to her.

"It's not that I'm worried about her being a vampire, I'm worried about the fact that she will be a hybrid, nobody knows anything about this, I just want her to be safe."

"Take it from another hybrid, it's not all that bad." Klaus smirked playfully.

Elena couldn't help but chuckle, the first time since before her vomiting spell, "Thank you, Klaus."

"You're family, you're too marry my brother and have a child with him, you couldn't be anymore a part of this family."

"I'm going to have a niece or nephew," Rebekah suddenly realised what this baby meant to her, she was flooded with excitement and love; this is something she thought impossible.

The tension in the room was easing as they all began to talk more about the positive aspects of a baby in there lives; the only tension left came from Elijah, he was trying to engage in the conversation and be as happy as everyone else but he couldn't, there was still a few questions left unanswered but Elena had finally relaxed and she appeared to be happy, he didn't want to ruin that.

A little while had passed; Bonnie had left, Elena and the originals where the only ones left, they had tried to stop talking about the pregnancy and move on to other lighthearted topics but they kept going back to the baby, Rebekah was the worst, she was so excited to have a baby in there lives.

"I think it's time for me and Elena to go to bed, you have to rest," Elijah placed his hand over hers.

"You're right," Elena nodded her head and stood with him, as much as didn't want too because of the fun she was having, she knew she had too, "Goodnight, everyone."

"Goodnight, Elena," Spoke Rebekah.

"Sleep well," Klaus followed with.

They had both retired to the bedroom, Elena changed into a pair of comfortable pyjamas which consisted of a pair shorts and a vest top; she climbed into bed next to Elijah and snuggled up against him.

"I'm still really worried about you," Elena spoke, as she traced her fingers along his chest, "What's wrong?"

"I'm still fearful for this pregnancy and what it may do to you." She could see the utter concern spread across his face, everytime he held her, he held her so close and so tightly that she felt attached to him; he wasn't going to be letting her go anytime soon.

"What it will do to me is bring me pure happiness, Elijah," She lifted her head to face him, her eyes locked onto his, "This is something that just doesn't happen, ever! We're destined to be together as a family, even magic can't fight that."

"What if you don't make it through the pregnancy?" Even as he spoke those words he felt a sharp tinge of pain in his chest, the thought of losing her crippled him.

"I will, it's destined," She sounded so confident and sure about this, she knew in the deepest part of her heart that she would live through it, "This was because of magic and magic will save us."

"We can't know that."

"Will you do one thing for me?" She asked as she propped herself up and leaned back on the headboard.

"Anything,"

"Listen," She gestured towards her stomach, "Use your hyper sensitive hearing."

"I can't," All of his emotions flooded through in his voice.

"Please?" She placed her hand onto his cheek and caressed his skin gently, "I need you to do this."

He nodded his head and she guided him towards her stomach, he pressed his ear onto her skin and really focused on the pace within her.

"I can hear her," He couldn't help but smile widely, "I can hear her little heartbeat."

"She's already so perfect," Elena began to cry slightly at Elijah and his words; the image of there family was starting to come together.

"She sounds strong,"

"Of course she is, she's your child and mine, she's going to be tough," Elena chuckled slightly, the tears of joy streaming down her face.

As much as Elijah wanted to hate this entire situation, he couldn't; he saw the happiness the child already brought to Elena and to hear her heartbeat so purely from within her broke his last walls of defence.

"I want this," Elijah continued to listen to the heartbeat, his arm now wrapped her stomach to pull him in closer, "I want our family, I'm deeply sorry for my behaviour."

"Every father has newborn jitters," Elena spoke, "I knew you'd want this, you just had to see how perfect this will be for yourself. You're going to be an amazing father."

"I love you so much, Elena," He broke away from her stomach for a few long minutes to kiss her passionately but he soon returned.

"I love you, Elijah."

He remained there for a long time just listening, Elena loved watching him bond with there unborn baby.

"Can we talk about one more thing?" Elena spoke out of the blue.

"Of course," Elijah responded.

"I want to push up the wedding, I want to be married to you before I'm too large to fit into a dress and too tired after the baby is born, I'll look terrible" She chuckled lightly at the images that crept into her head.

"You'll still be beautiful," Elijah responded, "But I'll marry you whenever you desire,"

"I'm so excited, I'll talk to the girls tomorrow and see when we can get it all planned; 2 out of 3 of my best friends don't sleep anyway, we could get this done so quick."

"I can't wait to be your husband," Elijah kissed her softly on the hand.

"And I can't wait to be your wife."

Elena fell asleep not long after the wedding plan, Elijah had remained still nestled on her stomach and listening to his child's heartbeat, he eventually fell asleep but he didn't move from her.

He had never felt true happiness like this before, his slumber was filled with nothing but excitement and love.
