The Final Step
Approaching the college, El bit her lip, physically it wouldn't be too difficult to accomplish the task. But they knew what they were doing, sending her here, so soon after the incident on Saturday, when things were still raw. That was why she was glad that Nancy and Mike were here, ready to help her.
"So, how are we going to do this, Nancy?" Mike asked.
Nancy looked around as they stood in the parking lot.
"Alright, we need to lure the guard outside and give ourselves plenty of time...I know just how to do it, wait till you see this." She replied, a sardonic smile building on her face.
She led them through the parking lot to a car parked on its own, it looked like a car that one would take pride in, except it was also in bad shape, just barely drivable.
"This is the guard's car, Larry always goes on about his pride and joy, yet he hardly takes care of it. But is always very...sensitive about it." Nancy explained. "Which is our ticket it...Now Mike, I know you probably go up with El."
"But-?"
"But you need to stay down here, you're gonna distract Larry while I take El up, I have a key to the common room and she may need help finding what she's looking for." Nancy continued.
El nodded. "Right. She's right Mike, please."
Mike sighed but nodded. "Alright, alright, just…tell me what you need me to do?"
Nancy nodded and began to detail her plan to them both before casually putting her foot on the car bumper, which promptly just came off the car at that point.
Mike took a deep breath, making his way up the steps, he glanced over to El and Nancy who were taking cover by the door. They nodded and he opened the door and stepped into the college lobby. The guard, the same one who had confronted Will when he had ducked into the college to escape his father back then, stood up from behind his desk.
"Hey there, um...you're not a student here, are you?" He asked. "You look a little too young for that."
Mike cleared his throat. "No sir."
"Then I'm afraid, unless you're here to meet someone, I'm gonna have to ask you to leave."
"Actually." Mike remarked. "I needed to report something. There's a car out there, kinda...separate from the others, it looks like it's been damaged, the fender has fallen off and-"
"Wait, what. That's...my car?" The guard gasped. He quickly rushed out and Mike followed, keeping an eye on things while El and Nancy slipped inside and made it to the stairs, heading up towards the common room. As they hurried there, Nancy bit her lip, looking over at this girl El.
"So, these people that are doing this. They've been casting a shadow over your life, for years?" She asked quietly.
El sighed but nodded. "Yes, I...I thought I'd got away from them and hoped I could have a proper life, despite my powers. But now they've taken Eric, just to get to me."
Nancy grimaced. "That's terrible. I...I don't even know what to say.
All the while she was thinking to herself.
'God, that's...This is the girl Mike told me about, the one he's clearly got a crush on, but she seems to like Eric, it…'
Her thoughts were interrupted as she reached the door, focusing instead on unlocking it.
As she did so and they stepped inside, El seemed to be thinking to herself, unsure as they made their way to Eric's dorm. The door was ajar so they opened it and stepped inside.
"It looks...tidy?" El noticed.
Nancy nodded. "Yeah, if we had to guess, it was like this since late Saturday night or early Sunday morning."
El nodded to herself and then sighed heavily. "Nancy, can I ask you a favour?"
Nancy started. "What, what is it?"
"When we get Eric's medication, can you show me some other way out of here and take Mike back to the others to wait...I have to do this alone." She said softly. "I can't let him come with me, let anyone come with me. I can't put Mike or anyone else in danger, I have to do this alone."
Nancy started in shock, true she had only known this girl for a while, the rest she knew from what Mike told her. But she never realised just how selfless this girl was, trying to avoid putting others at risk, despite the danger to herself.
She was reluctant, but she couldn't refuse her. "I...alright, I'll do it."
El smiled, thanking her before they resumed focus on the task at hand.
Slipping back out the college, using the door to the courtyard which led to a low wall which she could climb and get outside the college all together, El clutched the bag containing Eric's insulin and syringes close to her. She checked the radio and sure enough she got a message congratulating her for completing the task and giving her exactly what she had been desperately seeking, the location of where Eric was being held. She wasted no time and, after a quick check, verifying Nancy was taking Mike back to the others, seeing Mike was even more reluctant than Nancy to leave, she slipped away, ready to find and rescue Eric at last, there was still time as long as she hurried.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
