Face to Face
El could only stare in terror at Brenner's presence as he stood before her, this was no nightmare, no bad dream, he really was here. At once all the memories came flooding back like a wave, the constant fear, his voice dominating everything, everywhere she turned, everything she did he was there, his demands. If she refused it got worse, the punishments, the cell.
'N-no, it...it can't be, please no…' Her mind raced, fear clouding her rational thought process. 'Not him…'
Brenner merely smiled, everything had worked out just as he planned and now Eleven was here before him. He had sent her instructions and she had followed them all, just as she was supposed to and now she had delivered herself to him. He knew now that his plan was indeed going to work, success was within his grasp. The mere fact she had addressed him the way she had told him that.
"I knew you'd come, Eleven." He said with smile. "I knew you would succeed. You had your instructions and followed them to the letter, very good."
She flinched at his words, being reminded, yet again of the whole time she was at the lab, a prisoner who didn't even realize, at first, they were a prisoner. It was the only life she had known and it wasn't until that stormy night, when she was so scared by what she was being asked to do, that she found a way to escape and took it.
After her escape it had been three whole days of terror, trying to find food, places to hide, anything, then she ended up being found by Hopper and her fear had increased. Until she had managed to finally reveal the truth to him, Hopper had suspected from the start that something was wrong and slowly but surely gained her trust. It was after that she was sent to her first foster home while Hopper tried to ensure she would be kept safe. But there was little he could do, due to their government connections the lab was beyond Hopper's reach and that was the reason for her being bounced between various foster homes.
"Now, we can go home, Eleven, we can fix this and you can achieve your true purpose." Brenner said with a smirk.
He stepped closer and El flinched, her mind was screaming at her to use her powers, to stop him, but her body wouldn't move, too paralysed with fear, lost in remembering all that had happened and the trauma she had endured. Her mind flashed back to the one time her foster family were sadly killed by the ones Brenner sent, but she had managed to hide from them. Finally however Brenner disappeared and the lab seemed to shut down, nobody knew how or why. But it was soon deemed safe enough for her to return to Hawkins and that was when she began living with Hopper, leading to everything that had happened over the past month or so.
Brenner then held out his hand.
"Come, Eleven, it is time to leave."
That finally jolted her back to the present, to the current situation, the danger.
"Wait, I need to, Eric…"
Brenner glared. "He is not important, leave him. He was a means to an end, a focus for your instructions and you know it, now, we're leaving."
That was enough for El, although still scared she swallowed back her fear.
"No."
Brenner froze at that, startled. "What did you say?"
"I said no, I'm not going anywhere with you." She growled. "I came here for Eric, that is all."
Brenner looked like he'd been punched in the gut, this couldn't be right, this wasn't how things were supposed to go.
"You-"
He was cut off by the sound of gunfire in the previous room. El turned to look in shock, wondering if it was who she hoped and if she hadn't just made a terrible mistake. Footsteps approached and then the door opened and in stepped…
"Hop!"
The police chief gasped upon seeing her and hurried forwards, to El's shock he was putting his sidearm away.
"El, you're okay. Thank God." He burst out. "What on…"
It was then El looked back and her stomach dropped, Brenner was gone, he must have slipped out the doorway opposite and would likely have already escaped by now.
"I...I need to help Eric, quickly, time's running out." She said rapidly.
Hopper nodded and helped her give Eric the injection.
"Did I...will he…?"
Hopper nodded. "He'll survive. That'll help stave off the worst until we get him to the hospital for proper treatment."
El let out a sigh of relief, at least the worst was over for now.
El bit her lip as she knew Hopper had to at least know about her skipping school by now.
"I'm sorry…" She said quietly.
Hopper nodded. "It's okay Kiddo, I understand, your friends told me the story, as much as they could at least."
El nodded, silently grateful to the rest of the Party for making this part easier.
"But we still need to talk, I didn't see him, but I heard enough, I know who was here." Hopper told her. "We need to figure things out, together alright."
El nodded again, some hope filling her.
"First thing's first, let's get Mr. Gibson here to a hospital."
El agreed but then started when she heard Eric groan, she watched over him worriedly until his eyes fluttered open, seeing her.
"Jane...you…" He whispered, then saw the bag she was holding. "You saved me?"
El smiled at that and nodded in confirmation.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
