"Hey, isn't that the girl from the sports festival?" Eijiro asks Katsuki in the hallway one day. The blonde boy turns around and sees Sato Kanami talking with someone outside of the Class 1-A room. Almost immediately, his face feels hot and his heart starts beating faster, just like at the festival. What the hell's wrong with me? He asks himself. "You should go talk to her." Katsuki looks at Eijiro in complete shock.
"Why the hell would I do that?" He all but yells. Eijiro smirks, nodding his head in the girl's direction.
"Well, we both know you want to and now she's staring at you." Eyebrows lowered, he angled himself to see her out of the corner of his eye, sure enough, she's staring directly at him with wide, concerned eyes. With a roll of his own and a groan, he shoots Eijiro a death glare before relaxing his posture and walking over to the first year. She quickly tells her classmate she'll be in in a second and looks at him with that same concerned expression.
"Hi," she starts, her voice quiet and a little shy. Katsuki finds himself smirking at her. "Are you okay? You and your friend seemed to be arguing over there." He rolls his eyes again, shaking his head.
"Nah, it's cool, he just thinks he's smarter than he is." The short girl in front of him giggles and smiles up at him, it takes conscious effort for Katsuki to remember how to breathe again. "You, uh, you did really well in the festival. I see you moved up a class, very impressive." She blushes, looking at the floor, and he's more than a little grateful for the reprieve.
"It's not that big a deal…" she says, clearly embarrassed.
"Hey, that's a hard class to get into. I would know, I was in it." Even to his own ears, Katsuki feels that was a bit too arrogant and mentally curses himself. What is happening to me?
"I know," she replies, "everyone knows about your class. Not exactly a low key bunch." She winks at him, clearly teasing. Had anyone else said it, he would have blown up on them then and there, but coming from her… he doesn't mind the light teasing. So, he chuckles, leaning against the wall.
"Yeah, that's fair. How're you liking it so far?" Her grey eyes light up a bit, almost silver in her excitement, and Katsuki can swear he sees a bit of a twinkle in there.
"Oh, it's great! Aizawa-sensei definitely makes us work for it, but it's so worth it. I can already see some progress since the festival!" He smirks down at her as she explains some of the training he has them going through and the classes she's taking before stopping herself, a sheepish grin taking over her face as she suddenly becomes very interested in a piece of curly, light blue hair that had fallen in her face. "But, uh, you already knew that having already had him, sorry…"
"No, it's fine, it's cute when you talk about it." She looks up at him, eyes wide, completely shocked he'd said something like that to her. She isn't the only one; internally, Katsuki is trying to figure out exactly where that thought had come from and what had possessed him to say it. Blushing five shades of red, Kanami looks back at the ground, studying her red Doc Martens.
"I should, umm, I should get to class." Katsuki clears his throat, shaking his head.
"Yeah, yeah, me too." She waits a second before turning to go into her classroom. "Hey," she stops at his voice to find him looking anywhere but at her and tilts her head. "You, uh, wanna get lunch together? Or something? The other idiots from my class will probably be there, too. Unless you're already sitting with someone." She smiles at him, shaking her head.
"They won't mind. See you in the cafeteria?" He looks up at her, more than a little surprised she'd said yes, before nodding his head. "Cool. Later, Bakugou." Turning around, Eijiro is standing right where he'd left him looking awfully pleased with himself.
"So?" He asks when Katsuki is close enough to hear him. "How'd it go?" Katsuki rolls his eyes and starts walking to class, Eijiro in tow beside him.
"We're saving her a seat at lunch." Eijiro grins proudly and lightly punches his shoulder.
"Nice! I knew you had it in ya!" Katsuki glares at his friend before rolling his eyes again. He doesn't need to know how grateful he is for sending him over. By lunchtime, everyone at their table knew about their guest and couldn't be happier. They'd all been so impressed by her performance at the festival but hadn't had a chance to talk to her since. When lunchtime rolls around, Katsuki and Eijiro wait for Kanami at the cafeteria entrance where she greets them with a smile. After going through the line to get their food, they both lead her to their table in the back where Kaminari Denki, Ashido Mina, and Hanta Sero are already waiting. "Hey guys!" Eijiro yells upon their arrival, "Look what we found!" Almost instantly, Mina scoots over and insists Kanami sits with her.
"That's Sero, Mina, and Denki," Katsuki points to each in turn before settling in to eat his food, "Guys, this is Sato."
"It's really great to meet you all, I've heard so much about all of you!"
"Hate to break it to ya," Mina starts, gesturing to the other boys at the table, "but we're really not that interesting."
"Hey, speak for yourself!" Denki yells around the food in his mouth. "I'm plenty interesting." Mina snorts at him, rolling her eyes.
"Says the walking outlet. Is my phone done charging yet?" Grumbling to himself, Denki passes the phone across the table.
"You're kidding, right?" Kanami asks incredulously. "You guys took on the League of Villains when you were in my year, that's insanely interesting! And your quirks are all so great!"
"Speaking of quirks," Sero cuts in, leaning across the table, "I've got some questions about yours!" Kanami blushes, but nods her head and answers all of their questions, and they, in turn, answer her's. By the time lunch is over, none of them are ready to leave, even Katsuki who's usually more than ready to escape from his friends. He goes so far as to walk her back to her class and, suddenly feeling more than a little awkward, lingering.
"Your friends are all really nice, you're lucky to have them you know." He scoffs, smirking to himself.
"Yeah, they're alright I guess." Kanami, having already gotten used to his gruff, sarcastic personality, reads this as admitting he is happy to have them. "Listen, what're your plans for lunch tomorrow?" Smiling softly, she pretends to think about it.
"Mmm, I don't think I really have any. Why?" She notices a slight tinge of pink on his cheeks and forces herself not to laugh, for fear of scaring the seventeen-year-old away.
"Think you might be able to handle sitting with us again? I know they're pretty annoying, but I promise the questions won't be as bad if you do." This time, she does let out a little laugh before nodding her head.
"I think I could manage. They really aren't that bad. Besides, it's not like I wasn't asking any of my own." He chuckles a bit to himself, chewing on his lower lip.
"Whatever you say, first year. I'll see you tomorrow then."
"Sounds good! Later, Bakugou!"
"Later, Sato." Once she disappears into her classroom, he hurries to his own class, where his friends are eagerly waiting for him. He sits down in silence, knowing exactly what they're waiting for.
"Well?" Mina asks, loud enough to make those around them wince.
"Well?" He asks in return, settling into his seat. She rolls her eyes at him, leaning over his desk.
"Is she coming back tomorrow?" He looks up to find Eijiro looking at him, one eyebrow raised in silent question. Smirking at his best friend, he gives the smallest of nods. Eijiro grins toothily, immediately holding up his hand for a fist bump which Katsuki promptly returns.
"Hey, Ka-chan!" Izuku yells, just noticing his friend in the corner. "Was that Sato sitting with you guys at lunch?" Mina practically runs over to answer him.
"Yeah! She's just the absolute cutest thing ever! She's so sweet and has no clue just how powerful her quirk really is and - " Katsuki tunes the rest of her out as he thinks about the cute blue and purple haired girl from 1-A. Hitoshi walks in and hears Mina talking about that first year girl. So, he thinks, Bakugou got to her. Poor kid. He shakes his head slightly, keeping his face uninterested, despite eavesdropping to hear more about her. Can't really blame the others for being interested in her through, he admitted to himself. Even he'd been tempted, several times, to ask Aizawa about her during their extra training they still did.
"Hey, Ka-chan, do you think she'd mind if some of us sat with you guys, too?" Izuku asks, startling both boys out of their thoughts.
"Why the hell would you do something like that?" Katsuki yells back.
"The rest of us wanna get to know her too!" Uraraka Ochako explains, crossing her arms over her chest.
"I don't think she'd mind, she seems really sweet and interested in all of us. She'd probably love it!" Sero chimes in, much to Katsuki's irritation. I knew bringing her around these idiots was a mistake. Seeing everyone's excitement at meeting the new girl, he rolls his eyes and slumps in his chair. If they're gonna be like this about it, I guess I at least have to ask her. Maybe she'll say no. He's known the girl for less than a day and he knows that won't be the case tomorrow.
Sure enough, tomorrow when he meets her at the front of the cafeteria and tells her about his classmates' plan, she laughs and is completely fine with it. Once they're in line for food, she nudges him with her elbow.
"You don't seem okay with it though, everything alright?" He scoffs, looking anywhere but at her. He'd been up most of the night trying to figure out why that weird annoying feeling in his chest the day before had been jealousy over a girl he barely knew.
"They're just obnoxious." She smirks at the tray of food in front of her, recalling a certain someone's opening statement to the sports festival two years prior, but keeps her comments to herself. "And they're nosy as all hell. Gotta know everything about everyone." She shrugs, grabbing some chocolate cake for her tray.
"That's what you said yesterday and everything was fine. If you're just trying to talk me out of sitting with you though,"
"That's not it at all!" Katsuki interrupts, immediately turning away. So not cool… He hears a soft chuckle beside him and looks down to see Kanami looking up at him, more than a little amused.
"Okay then, I'll sit with you guys and it'll be fun. Deal?" Katsuki rolls his eyes but nods his head anyway. Once at the table where almost his whole class is waiting, he pulls out a chair next to his for her to sit in. She smiles, settling in, while introductions are made. Just like she'd said, everything went perfectly well, and Katsuki once again left the lunch room with a smile on his face.
