SAKURA AND VERSACE

03

WORDS OVER RAMEN

"Hi mom," Sakura says into the phone receiver as she gathers her things into her bag. "I was worried when I got home and you weren't here," The woman says back and Sakura nearly face palms. She'd completely forgotten to tell her mother she was staying after school. Seeing as Sakura had made it a habit to call her mother when she got home she'd probably given the woman a heart attack.

"I'm sorry ma'. I -uh- I got invited to ramen, so I just stayed." Her mother gives a hum over the phone and Sakura can vaguely hear her rummaging around before she asks, "Did you take your pills today?"

"You know I did mom," To further her point she pulls the pill bottle out and shakes it near her phone so her mother can hear. "You know I don't leave the house without them," Sakura continues to say to her mother. "Just in case."

"I know baby, I just wanted to make sure." Her mother coos affectionately, and Sakura sighs. Her mother was overprotective but Sakura knew it always came from a place of worry and love. Because she dealt with anxiety as severe as it was, she had to carry around SSRIs all the time. "I know mama,"

"So who are you going to get ramen with? Is it a boy?" Her mother suddenly teases and Sakura can hear the smile in her voice. "Is he cute?"

"Mama!" Sakura exclaims as she goes red in the face, "Stop it!"

The woman laughs at her daughter as she continues to tease her, "You didn't answer the question, Sakura," The latter blushes as she pushes a stray piece of hair behind her ear, "It's the baseball team's captain," She whispers quietly into the phone and her mother squeals, "Sakura! That's so good!"

"It's just for an interview ma' "Sakura immediately says as her mother begins to babble into the phone like a teenager. But the woman pays no mind as she continues to plan a meeting between her and Naruto that Sakura refuses to ever let happen.

From across the field, Sakura can see Naruto jogging back towards her. Shoving the pills back into her bag, she immediately tries to shush her mother, "I gotta go now, I'll talk to you when I get home." She tells her mother frantically before hanging up and dropping her phone into her bag just as her Naruto comes to a stop in front of her.

"Who was that?" He asks curiously and Sakura shrugs, "Just my mom. She was worried, that's all."

"Oh," Naruto's eyebrows crease for a moment before he smiles, "So about that ramen…"

MOON RIVER

Sakura concluded Naruto's stomach was an endless pit. Within minutes of getting their bowls of ramen. Naruto had somehow managed to swallow two bowls of the noodles down. Meanwhile she was still on her first bowl.

"Ne Sakura-Chan," Naruto says, breaking the silence, "Can I tell you something?"

"Mhm?'

"I've noticed you since tenth grade," He says quietly as his face heats up, but Sakura only stares up at him in interest. Truly, it was only because she didn't know what to say to his admission. Naruto was only a year older than her but that was three-hundred and sixty-five days out of her reach.

Boys her own age had barely crossed her mind at all during, hence the reason she was so awkward around them, but older boys were a completely different dimension. Sakura had been in ninth grade while Naruto had been in tenth, meaning he had noticed her; her first year of high school.

"I'm- I'm sorry?" She says awkwardly but Naruto immediately shakes his head, "No, no. It's not your fault or anything. I guess I was just too much of a baby to talk to you." He gives a small laugh causing Sakura's own lips to turn upwards.

It was strange, Sakura had never seen herself sitting out with anybody but her friends in the newspaper club, let alone the baseball team's captain. Who had just admitted to having some-sort of crush on her.

"I guess that explains why I wanted to do this deal thing with you," Naruto states before turning towards her, "So I guess that's the deal, you get the interview and this could be our thing, us hanging out. This could even help you with the nervousness."

Sakura blinks at him owlishly, he wanted to hang out with her? Sakura deemed Naruto as weird in that moment, seeming as if he couldn't have just asked her to hang out with him. "Uhm, ok. Yeah." She says watching as Naruto's lips turned upward. It was obviously that was what the boy wanted to hear, so he ordered another bowl of ramen in celebration while Sakura finished her own, though it was lukewarm by then.

Two more bowls of ramen and some small talk later, it was eight o'clock and Sakura was getting tired. Standing, Naruto yawns himself, "I guess it's time we both got home." The atmosphere was comfortable on the ride to her home, so not much was said except the directions it took to get to the house.

"Thanks for the ramen," Sakura says waving goodbye from her porch.

"No problem, talk to you tomorrow?"

"Talk to you tomorrow, bye!"

"Bye, Sakura-Chan!" Naruto yelled from his window before pulling off and leaving her on the porch. Sakura felt in the back of her head she should stop Naruto from constantly putting the "Chan" behind her name. Seeming as they weren't close friends or lovers but a part of her, a big part, liked that he called her that.

Slipping into the house, Sakura was immediately met with the smiling face of her mother, "So how was the date."

'Mama!"
