Author Notes : Finally the long awaited confrontation between Lily and Snape. Sorry for the long wait. I needed to get this chapter out because I've been procrastinating for awhile and it's time to actually resume writing. I've also mostly have the next chapter outlined so hopefully the next update will be within the end of the week.
Lily POV
The tea is letting out steam as it sits on the table unattended. My legs are kind of shaking due to the nervousness and I keep looking towards Sev despite his back turned against me. He is making Spaghetti from what I can tell. His hair is pulled up in a neat little ponytail. His neck is showing. The cream white skin is glistening with the water from the shower he took. It's almost mesmerizing and I can't stop looking at him. The graceful way he is cooking both soothes me and yet puts an aching feeling in my heart.
"I came to your house for the last 3 days and you were not here."
Silence. It's almost as if he hasn't heard me and goes on with his cooking as if nobody is there. Okay this silent treatment is infuriating. He hasn't talked or said anything since he invited me for a cup of tea or in his exact words, "You'll freeze out here and it is dangerous to wander around here. If you want to wait, you can wait at my home." Then he served me tea and went to shower and now he is making what is a late dinner I presume. I sighed. Well no point in losing my cool. I should wait for him to finish his cooking.
Turns out he was done within a few more minutes. He surprisingly served me a plate as well. I don't know if he actually knew that I didn't have proper dinner or even any food in the last 24 hours or if it's just him being courteous. Either way I am grateful and mumble a polite thank you. We both eat in silence. My eyes keep drifting towards him. It hasn't been too long since he left Hogwarts but he almost looks like a different man. The clothes that he is wearing are fresh and aren't baggy or small. It fits him perfectly that means that these are his own clothes and not hand me down stuff. I can't remember him having this type of black woolen sweatshirt so it has to be new. His hair also has such a mesmerizing shine to it. There is no greasiness to it. It's also very well combed. Combined that with his height, he looks pretty good if I am being honest.
"Could you stop staring at me?"
Hearing that I mumbled an apology. I blushed a bit being caught red handed. I feel dirty checking out my former best friend so openly.
"I had to properly present myself in my new job and they bought me all these clothes." So Sev realized my curiosity without me voicing it. It made me smile internally. He still knows me so well.
"If you don't mind me asking, where are you working?"
"One of Malfoy's Family labs. I am in charge of most of the miniscule work in the lab. It's mostly medical potions but there's no payment."
"What do you mean there's no payment?" I asked as the notion of Sev working without payment or incentive is very weird to me.
"Well, it's more like I have to work good enough to earn their trust before I am handed a proper job. For the time being they provide me enough food, clothes and necessary potion ingredients to go by. Mr. Malfoy is generous and seems to be keen to see where I can reach."
"Do you work all night for Mr, Malfoy?"
"No. I only work till Evening."
"So, why haven't you been in your home at night? I've been coming here for the last few days and you haven't been here at all."
This made Sev a bit annoyed as I can see from his facial expression. "That is my business and I would appreciate it if you can maintain a respectable boundary. You don't see me snooping around you and your boyfriend or whatever the hell you Gryffindor lot do in your free time."
Oh wow so are diving right into it. No easing into the conversation. His comment really irked me. I am just curious about him. I know he doesn't wanna admit it but I still care about him. There's no need for such hostility. "First of all I have no boyfriend and yes I have a crush on James but that doesn't mean anything. Is it so wrong that I want to know about my best friend who by the way has not answered to the hundreds of letters I sent."
I see Sev's face turn into a nasty sneer at the sound of James's name but he doesn't say anything about him. "I don't know what we are but we sure as hell are not best friends anymore. We both hurt each other far too much for either of us to claim the title of best friends."
Hearing this still breaks my heart. I knew he didn't consider me as best friends anymore but it's still a sore spot for me.
Sev continues, "As for your other inquiry, I didn't answer your letters for two reasons. One is I barely had the time. Since I left Hogwarts, I have been working tirelessly to make sure I have a place to stay and somehow salvage my drowning career. I cannot afford to fuck up. The second reason is I haven't had the chance to fully internalize all my thoughts and I didn't want to talk before I had everything under control."
"So, this talk that you wanted to have, is it because you want to end our friendship or because you want to save it?" I said in a weak voice. I can feel my voice cracking towards the end. Tears on the verge of my eyes and a few drops kept falling out. Just imagining that this is where we have reached is so heartbreaking. Where did it go wrong? I can't even look at his face. He doesn't say anything. After a few tense minutes I look up to see him Staring at the window. I was bracing myself for the inevitable but he suddenly says.
"I don't know. There are a lot of things I hate about you and I am not sure if I can even forgive them but I want to. You have saved me in a crucial moment of my life when if I didn't have you, I most probably would've killed myself but then again you have also pushed me to consider myself to end my life. I don't know Lily. I don't know what I want. I just need a bit more time to figure myself out.
My next recommendation is Ananke by Eunike. ( s/4400517/1/Ananke)
Easily the best forward time travelling story of this pair and it's from Lily's pov so that's a huge positive. The ending is slightly rushed but everything else is perfect.
