Surprise

(Set post 9.10, inspired by Cassie's (darveypainted) beautiful painting)

Two pink lines. A blue plus sign. Yes. 2-3 weeks.

Donna was surprised by just how many different symbols and words could be used to describe the same result. The fifth plastic test provided the most obvious answer.

Pregnant.

"Wow."

"Holy shit."

They both spoke at the same time, and she almost wanted to laugh because, unexpectedly, it was her, rather than Harvey, who used the expletive.

She looked up at him, feeling her eyes grow wide as reality began to sink in, at a loss for words.

"Donna," Harvey whispered her name in awe.

It was too soon, way too soon. They hadn't really discussed this yet, even though the knowing glances they had shared while she held baby Lucy had said enough about what they both wanted in the future. But now, just a month into their marriage and two weeks after arriving in Seattle was not the time Donna pictured starting a family.

But despite all that she could feel something building in her chest, some emotion she couldn't initially name, until it bubbled up her throat and forced its way out, a grin spreading across her face. She found a name for it then, joy. Joy, mixed with a healthy dose of fear as well if she was being honest with herself. Looking at Harvey she saw he was wearing a similar expression, his eyes sparkling in wonderment. A baby. She and Harvey had made a baby.

"Are we really doing this?" she asked as he grinned at her. Harvey trailed his hand down her body to rest lightly against her stomach and Donna felt herself tremble at the realisation that beneath his palm, a tiny little person was being formed.

"We sure are," he said, bending to press a kiss to her lips, "and there's no one else I'd rather do it with."

"But it's so soon," she breathed, voice wavering. The small part of her mind that hadn't been left totally stunned by this discovery can't help but be amazed by the fact she seemed to be the one spiralling with this news, while the king of panic attacks, can't handle change, Harvey Specter, seemed completely calm. He really had come such a long way.

"Maybe it is," he said softly, "or maybe we should have done this 12 years ago," he added, eyes twinkling down at her, before his face sobered, turning serious. "Maybe this isn't when we expected it to happen Donna, but I love you so much and you, our baby," Harvey's voice broke as he said the word, "that's all I've ever wanted in my life."

Donna ran her hand over his shoulder, smiling up at him through tears of happiness. "I can't believe we made a baby," she whispered, pressing a hand to her face, still feeling overwhelmed by that fact. Harvey reached for her then, enclosing her in his arms, pulling her tight against his chest. She felt him press a kiss to her hair, lips brushing tenderly over the strands as he murmured just how happy he was, how much he loved her.

A baby, a family with Harvey. Donna never knew life could ever feel this perfect, as she decided that this might just be exactly when this was meant to happen after all.
