Chapter 6
Seven Years Later (Normal POV)
"Failure won't be tolerated, Fox. You must succeed or you know what the consequence will be"
"Yes, I understand. I won't let you down sir"
"H-hey, I told you it wasn't the boy's fault. I was chasing them. Leave the kid alone" a pink haired girl spoke nervously to the boy dressed in black who was holding a little boy by the collar.
"I just want to play a little while we are waiting for someone to get here"
"LEAVE KONOHAMARU ALONE!" The kid in orange charged at the other boy but fell midway. "WHAT WAS THAT?"
"Is this the best Konoha genin can do?" The boy said smugly.
"HEY YOU BLACK PIG, RELEASE KONOHAMARU AT ONCE OR ELSE I'M GONNA MAKE YOU REGRET IT!"
"Naruto, don't be such a dummy. You'll get us all kicked" The pink haired girl snapped
"Heh, I'm gonna kill this shrimp and then I'll kill you. Is that fine with you Temari?"
"I'm not taking responsibility of whatever you do Kankuro"
"Fine. I'll just do it on my own then"
"HAAAAH! KONOHAMARU!" Naruto charged at Kankuro again but at that moment a girl appeared in front of Kankuro, holding a kunai at his throat in one hand and a stone, which was thrown by someone on the tree, in the other.
"Leave the kid" she said in a commanding tone
"Who are you and why would you care about this kid. You are not even of this village" Kankuro said, eyeing the girl's hitai-ate.
"That doesn't matter. I won't tolerate such behaviour towards little kids. I don't care about what you have against the genin but the kid has nothing to do with it. And also" she threw the stone back at the tree "have your stone back, mister. You could have ended up hurting the kid if this man had moved a little"
They all looked up and saw Sasuke sitting on the branch of the tree.
"He wouldn't have. I was sure of that"
"I wouldn't be so sure if I were you but anyways, put that kid down" she said looking back at Kankuro.
"Hah, you think you are all high and mighty. Let's settle everything right here" he said, putting down the big load he was carrying on his back
"Kankuro, don't tell me you're planning to use crow" Temari said, shocked.
"Don't Kankuro. You're a disgrace to our entire village" An unfamiliar voice spoke from the direction of the tree.
"G-Gaara" Kankuro spoke, looking quite terrified
"It annoys me that you'd lose control in a quarrel with children. Have you forgotten why we came here?"
"But they started it. That little boy slammed into me"
"Shut up or I'll kill you"
"We're sorry Gaara. Really sorry" The blond girl and Kankuro started apologizing quickly, as if they took that death threat seriously. The red headed kid jumped down from the tree.
"The fact that we arrived early doesn't mean you start creating nuisance around the village. Let's go"
"Wait! According to your headbands, you guys are from the village hidden in the sand but according to the treaty people from your village can't come and go as they please. State your purpose here" The pink haired girl spoke again.
"Weren't you informed?" The blond girl, Temari spoke "We are junior level shinobi. We are here to take the chunin selection exams"
"The chunin selection exams? What's that?" Naruto asked
"You really don't know? The junior level shinobi are sent from various villages to compete against candidates of your village, mainly to maintain the skill of shinobi at same level and foster friendship between the shinobi. And of course to maintain the balance of power between the nations." Temari explained "That's why this other girl has come to this village too" she added
"Is that so?" Sakura asked, looking at the raven haired girl
"Yes"
"OH COOL! I SHOULD TAKE PART IN THESE EXAMS! What do you think Konohamaru?" Naruto said, excitement evident in his eyes.
Just then Sasuke jumped down from the tree.
"Hey you, what's your name?" he asked
"Who? Me?" Temari asked, blushing
"No, the one next to you"
"Gaara, Gaara of the desert. And you are?"
"Uchiha Sasuke"
"Hey hey, don't you want to know my name!?" Naruto interjected
"No, Let's go"
"Konohamaru, do I look like such a loser?" Naruto asked sadly, sitting in a corner
"Umm...may I know your name?" the raven haired girl asked sitting next to Naruto
"You don't have to ask me my name out of pity"
The girl shook her head "That's not why I am asking you your name, I want to know the names of the people who I think can be a challenge at the exams"
"Really? Is that really so?" Naruto asked, not believing her.
"Hai" she said, smiling.
"Oh okay then. I'm Uzumaki Naruto and I'm going to become the hokage of this village dattebayo!" he said enthusiastically. The girl stared at him for a moment "What? Don't say that I can't become the hokage"
"Wha-Oh, No I wasn't going to say that. I think you might just be able to become the hokage in the future"
Now it was Naruto's turn to stare at her.
"What happened, Naruto-kun? Did I say something wrong?" she asked nervously
"No but you are some of the few people who didn't make fun of me for saying that. Most of the people say it's impossible for someone like me to become hokage"
"But why? You have such a believable face. Who wouldn't believe you. Anyways, haven't you filled the chunin exam form yet?"
"No we haven't" the pink haired girl spoke
"Oh, and you are?"
"Haruno Sakura."
"What's your name?" Sasuke asked, frowning.
"Oye Sadako!" A brown haired boy, who was clearly not from Konoha, came up to them "What are you doing here? Sensei was searching for you everywhere"
"Ah, sorry to make you all worried Ryu-kun. I was just exploring the place"
"Don't run off like that again. And I'm not saving you from Sensei this time"
"What? That's not fair" She pouted
"Will you get scolded?" They looked down and saw Konohamaru and his gang looking at them, worried.
"Yes she will. She ran off without informing anyone so of course she will get scolded"
"But nee san saved me from a guy of other village"
"Oh is that so? Then perhaps I can save her this time" Ryu said and the kids' face brightened.
"But why did you save Konohamaru? I don't think you know him or anything" Sakura asked
"Oh well, I have a little sister back home so I am very sensitive when it comes to little kids"
"I see. Thank you for helping us though"
"Oh don't mention it"
"Come on let's go Sadako" said Ryu
"Hai. I hope we will meet again." she said "Oh and by the way, I'm Miyazaki Sadako" she added looking back at Sasuke
Timeskip to First day of chunin exam
"Would you guys do us a favour and shut up?" a teen wearing glasses, among the other candidates taking the chunin exams, spoke. "You all look like you just graduated from the academy. This exam isn't child's play"
"Who the heck do you think you are?" The blond girl, Ino said.
"My name's Kabuto. You kids need to open your eyes" he said
"Why?" Sakura asked.
"Many of the people here are short tempered, they won't hesitate to beat the hell out of you all. But I guess it can't be helped, you all are newbies after all. I remember what it was like"
"Is it your second time taking the exam?" asked Sakura
"No, it's my seventh. That is to say, my fourth year"
"Wow, you must have a lot of experience"
"I guess so. I can give you babies a little idea of what you're in for with my shinobi skill cards"
"Shinobi skill cards?"
"These cards contain information about skills we use, which can be accessed by infusing the chakra of the owner. It took me 4 years to gather all the intel I have been able to up till now" He said and infused chakra in a card. The information about the number of applicants of each nation became visible on the card.
"Hey, do you have cards for each individual applicant?" Sasuke asked
"Yeah. These are far from complete but still I might be able to give you some info"
"Gaara from Sunagakure, Rock Lee of Konoha"
"First up, Rock Lee. He is an year older than you, missions- 20 D Rank, 11 C Rank. Exceptionally talented in taijutsu. The other skills are not worth mentioning. He is first timer in the exam just like you. Mentor- Maito Gai, Teammates- Hyuga Neji and Tenten. Next, Gaara of Sunagakure. I don't have much info on him, 8 C Rank missions and 1 B Rank mission till date and he has completed all missions without getting a scratch"
They all stared at the card, shocked.
"All the villages have sent their elite shinobi, like Gaara and Rock Lee, to compete in the chunin exams" Kabuto finished
"OHHHH YEAH! I'M UZUMAKI NARUTO AND I'M GONNA BEAT ALL OF YOU PEOPLE IN HERE, BELIEVE IT!" Naruto said, enthusiastically
"Naruto, you idiot! What are you blathering about!?" Sakura said, hitting Naruto on the head. She noticed the candidates glaring at them "Oh please don't pay attention to my friend, he's an idiot"
"Hey you, Kabuto, show me the dossier card of Miyazaki Sadako" Sasuke said to Kabuto
"Hmm...Miyazuki Sadako. There you go. There is not much info about this one either. She has completed 25 D rank missions, 18 C rank missions, 7 B Rank missions and an A Rank mission...That can't be right"
"What's not right?" Naruto asked
"Naruto-kun, a genin doesn't usually get B or A rank missions in your village" said a familiar female voice
"Hey you are that girl we met a few days back" Naruto said, pointing at the girl
"Hai." she looked at Kabuto "Kabuto-san your information is surprisingly correct, but you don't have to be shocked seeing the number of B and A rank missions I have completed. It's common in our place for genins"
"Why is that so? I mean aren't those missions for chunin and jonin level people?" Sakura asked
"Well I'd rather not say anything about it" she replied
Suddenly someone from the crowd jumped up and threw kunais at Kabuto, who shifted back to avoid them. Another person snuck behind him and was about to punch him but he was able to dodge it, narrowly, at the last moment. But after a moment or so, his glasses cracked and he fell on his knees, vomiting.
"Are you okay, Kabuto?" The rookies ran up to him, worried, all of them having one question in mind.. HOW?
"How disappointing for someone who has been giving the exam for four years now"
"Everyone be quiet!" said a voice from the front of the room and the room was filled with the proctor and his fellow shinobi. "Sorry to keep you waiting, I'm Ibiki Morino, your proctor for the first part of the exam" The proctor looked like bad news. "You, the kids from hidden sound, you can't do what you want until you want to get disqualified"
"Sorry sir, this is our first time in this exam so we got a little carried away" Probably the strongest of the three replied.
"Is that so? Then it's high time someone laid down a few rules. No unauthorized fighting will take place from now on and even if permission is granted, anything that endangers the life of another applicant is strictly forbidden. Anyone who breaks that rule will be immediately disqualified, Got that?"
The whole room had gone silent and everyone was listening attentively to the proctor.
"The first part of the exam is about to commence. Everyone, turn in your written application, take one of the seat arrangement cards and report directly to your assigned seat for the written part of the test"
The candidates quickly took out their application forms and chose the cards and went to their respective seats.
"Papers face down until I give the signal. Now, before you all start writing, remember a few rules. Listen carefully, I won't repeat myself and no questions" said the proctor Ibiki "Rule number one: Each of you start off with a perfect score of 10 points. in the question paper there are 10 question, each of 1 point. For every wrong answer a point is subtracted from you. Rule number two: Whether you pass or fail will be determined by the sum of points of all the members of the team, so try to get as few deductions as possible"
"Wait a minute, what do you mean by 'team total'?" asked Sakura, raising her hand up in the air.
"Didn't you hear the part 'no questions'. Shut up and listen, you might learn something. Rule number three: If, during the course of the exam, any candidate is caught cheating then each member of their team looses 2 points. One more thing, if any individual looses all their points then their whole team will be disqualified. Remember these rules and your time starts...Now"
