Stuck
The sun was nearing the horizon, casting long rays across the whole sky and the land that surrounded Kaede's village. The hot summer day was coming to an end and the clouds heavy with rain were approaching from the east. All children were already back home from their playgrounds near the river.
All but two..
Two little girls were missing, not yet at home to start dinner with their parents. Their father was making his way down the path to the river to look for them. Usually he wouldn't have been so calm and walking so slowly if his daughters were missing. The cool-headed man was very protective of his little mischievous daughters.
The famous monk Miroku was a dutiful father to his children, always making sure they were safe and happy. He was also an attentive husband, still after years of marriage madly in love with his currently pregnant wife.
But today he walked in a steady, leisurely pace, admiring the beauty of the summer in the village, not worrying even for a moment about the well-being of his daughters.
And the reason for that was simple - not only the twins were missing. So was the great protector of the village, the famous hanyou Inuyasha. It didn't take a scholar to figure out that the canine warrior was still at the river, where he usually was to make sure that no kid drowned or got snatched by a youkai while playing.
"Oh no," Miroku heard the voice of his friend when he was close to the river. "I'm stuck. What will I do, how I will get free?"
The words spoke of great trouble in which the hanyou found himself. The tone of his voice sounded...
...Bored.
Miroku broke through the wall of bushes to enter the big field that came to the sandy riverbank. He cast one glance around and snickered.
Inuyasha, standing ankle-deep in sand, glared at him. He had his hands crossed over his chest and stood still while the twins were giggling and hastily piling more sand on his feet.
As Miroku approached, Inuyasha made a move as if he was going to pull one foot from under the sand, but never did it.
"Oh, I'm so stuck," he said as he peered down at the giggling girls, who doubled their efforts. One even grabbed on the leg of his hakama to make sure he stood still.
"You have a way with them," Miroku commented, not quite trying to hide his amusement at the hanyou's predicament. It was always a bit of a shock to see the gruff Inuyasha patiently watching over kids and suffering through most of their antics, unless they tried to grab his ears. And all that while sourly complaining to the parents about how he hated babysitting their spawns.
"You're here for the brats?" Inuyasha's ears perked up. "Take 'em home, monk. I thought you and Sango forgot about these since she's about to whelp another batch of 'em soon."
"Yes, the dinner is ready," Miroku bent down to stroke his daughters' heads. "Okay, girls, dig uncle Inu out and we're going to eat. If you don't free him, he'll be stuck here forever. And, my friend," he glanced up the hanyou. "Lady Kaede assured us that this time it will be one baby."
"Uncle Inu stuck!" one of the twins patted the mound of sand covering Inuyasha's feet.
Inuyasha grumbled a curse under his breath when Miroku's girls shook their heads and grabbed onto Miroku, wanting to be carried back home.
"Well, if you say so..." Miroku grinned and picked the twins up, before he turned around to leave.
.
Inuyasha dashed through his forest. He wasn't really in a hurry, but he liked to move fast. The day was pleasant and there was little to annoy him, so he was in a good mood. His wife was making a special dinner today and he was tasked with bringing the kids back home for the meal. Sango and the twins, along with Shippou, were already at his home, which meant that the remaining members of their families were still at the river playgrounds.
"Help! I'm stuck!" his ears twitched when he heard a desperate plea for help. It came from the riverside - just where Inuyasha was going. The hanyou quickened his pace, recognizing his idiot friend. The forest didn't smell of youkai, nowadays no one dared to challenge him in his own territory. But maybe there had been an accident? Were the brats safe? What had Miroku been thinking?
When Inuyasha arrived at the edge of the river, he simply stood and stared for a moment, his concerns forgotten.
His little daughter and Miroku's son were giggling and piling up sand in a sizable mound.
And Miroku's head was sticking out from the side of it. How the kids managed to put so much sand on top of the man was beyond Inuyasha. Why had Miroku allowed them to do so? Maybe the idiot had been daydreaming and not paying attention to what they had been doing? Or maybe they had puppy-eyed him into allowing them to cover him with sand? Weak human, letting his meek heart to be swayed and his better judgement compromised by mere two cute chubby toddlers with big sweet eyes. It was certainly his fault he was in this predicament?
Miroku's eyes lit up as he noticed Inuyasha's familiar aura.
"Oh, Inuyasha, help me! They..."
"You're stuck, monk," Inuyasha said as she walked towards his daughter to pick her up. "You'll have a lot of time to rethink your life choices," he added and scooped Miroku's giggling son in his arms as well. He smiled at the two brats, who showed no sign of remorse.
Kids were the most terrible monsters in Inuyasha's opinion. They used their cute vibes to soften their adult victims and lure them into a false sense of security.
Inuyasha wondered why only he, the great hanyou, was immune to their charms, while nuzzling his daughter's hair and letting her play with his forelocks.
