Lizzie's POV
We had to lay low...the kingdom was officially put on high alert and the news of my so called 'betrayal' to the crown was spread throughout all of Wonderland which meant I was now forced into hiding out in the Rambling Woods waiting for the right time to return to the White Castle and save my fiancé and father from their fates, I mean at least my Aunt wasn't my mother and she had a vow not to harm a living thing which at least meant they were safe from execution.
Jefferson was a massive help but now I'd gotten him branded as an accessory which was hard to believe considering my Aunt has known him a lot longer than she's known me which lead me to believe that she really wasn't thinking clearly and I was seriously questioning how sane she was to turn her back on him more than she turned her back on me, the news of his 'wanted' status hasn't really been good as he's been more mad than sane in the past few days we've spent hiding and camping out in the woods which meant I was more determined than ever to get us the hell out of this place because like me I knew he didn't want to be mad, he was just a man and this place had ruined him as it had ruined me before I'd even stepped foot here...no descendent or resident of Wonderland was safe...we were all mad and all I could sum it up to was this place warped and twisted even the sanest person into becoming mad, nothing was safe here.
"Tea?" I frowned at the acorn he handed me but took it anyway watching Jefferson walk back to our makeshift campsite and stir imaginary pot of water, I sighed shaking my head as I turned back to my drawing since in the past few days I've been trying to map out a rescue as it was too risky to use the hat again when my Aunt knew we had it and I reckon she knows my next step would be to rescue Harry which meant they'd no doubt be heavily guarded and a sneak rescue was out of the cards which meant I had to get clever because I was not leaving Wonderland without them.
"I'm gonna go find some tea leaves and I'll make us some fresh tea" I told Jefferson even though I doubted he was really hearing what I was saying and I wandered away from our campsite to forage since we were running low on supplies so I got busy collecting firewood and tried to find some tea leaves since tea calmed Jefferson down enough to have a stable conversation for a little while.
I knew to avoid the mushrooms as they still held the nasty ability to make one grow and shrink and I already hated Wonderland as it is meaning it was not an experience I wanted to go through so I avoided any mushrooms just in case and settled for a few berries that I managed to find and did find some wild tea leaves which I knew were safe to brew into a tea.
I spent about 30 minutes foraging and even tried my hand at fishing in the nearby lake since Harry had tried to teach me how to fish a lot given it was apart of the main food we eat on the ship but that didn't go so well since my lures sucked and the string I was using for fishing line was terrible and just snapped so I was returning to camp with a handful of berries and a couple tea leaves.
"Hey Hatter, I found some tea leaves" I called out as I arrived back to camp since I couldn't see him.
"Tea...tea...tea..." I sighed at the sound of his rambling from underneath our branch tent and made my way over to the fire using the tea kettle that I'd stolen from a village on the way to this place and started brewing the tea for him.
I was kind of upset that I'd had to return to stealing since it wasn't as fun as I remember it being on the Isle since I wasn't stealing for the hell of it, I was stealing to survive and it definitely wasn't fun...not knowing where to go, when we were gonna eat next and definitely being separated from Harry again made everything all the worse since I didn't know when we are gonna catch a break because at this rate we're gonna spend our entire lives finding one another before we even get the chance to marry.
I sighed sitting on a log next to the fire and stared into the burning embers since we barely let it get any flames afraid that someone would see the smoke and twirled my engagement ring around on my finger absentmindedly wondering why my life persisted in being so damn complicated when all I wanted in life was to be normal.
"I don't know if I can do this anymore Jefferson" I spoke aloud even though he probably wasn't listening but I didn't care if he was. "I spent so long fighting against my mother's expectations, fighting my inner demons when all I wanted was a simple life, is that too much to hope for?"
"For people like us yes" I turned when I heard his reply as he took the spot on the log beside me and I smiled at him.
"You know I haven't thanked you, for having my back and going against my Aunt when I know the two of you were friends" I replied and leaned my head against his shoulder. "I honestly don't know what I'd do if you weren't here"
"I'm grateful to be of some help" he replied and I understood he was semi-sane right now.
"We can't give up" I sighed lifting my head from his shoulder and pulled out my map of the plan I'd slowly been working on. "We have to save Harry and my father"
"But how?"
"I'm doing the most logical thing, I'm going to hand myself over to my Aunt and explain everything, she has too much power in her corner for me to do anything else...if it saves Harry than I'll spend the rest of my life in that dungeon but I have to have you promise that you'll get him out, get him back to his family"
"He won't like that"
"I know which is why you make him, give him this and tell him it's what I want" I reached up and unclasped the necklace from my neck before taking my ring off and slid it down next to the hook/heart pendant before re-clasping it and placed it in his hand. "Promise me Hatter that you'll get him home, no matter what happens to me"
"So what is the plan?" he asked holding my necklace in his fist.
"I'm going to cause a distraction, that'll draw the guards away then you use your hat to get into the dungeons and rescue them than give my father his heart and he'll get you out of wonderland with his looking glass" I explained and he frowned but there wasn't anything better and it's all we had since it's been two days already and we hadn't come up with anything else. "Please do this for me" I asked and he finally nodded.
"I'll miss you your naughtiness" he replied.
"As I'll miss you Hatter, my partner in madness" I smirked at him before I hugged him. "Get him home for me"
"I will" he promised and with that I let him go and started the long trek back to the White Castle ready to face my Aunt unafraid since I've faced more impossible things before and this was going to rescue the love of my life from spending his life in a dungeon because of me since Harry deserved more, he deserved to ride the waves aboard the Jolly Rodger with his family...he deserved better than me and that was the truth he just didn't see it but I always have.
Harry's POV
It's been two days since Liza escaped judging by the rising sun streaming through the barred window in me cell and it's been hell to say the least with her father as the only source of relief from the deafening silence but that also was apart of my hell as he rarely shut up, taunting the guards about meals and continuously chatting to me no matter how much I tried to remain silent and refusing to indulge is questions.
"I have to get out of here" I whispered to meself letting me head crack back against the stone wall that had once separated me from me fiancé, I was glad that Liza got out because she would've gone madder in this place but from the stories the guards continued to boast to us was that she was on the run with the Mad Hatter after they broke into the royal vault which made me slightly annoyed that she'd run to that mad person and that I was stuck here.
"So sea-rat...when did you purpose to my daughter?" I rolled me eyes as this was a frequent question which I was adamant on not answering just for the fact that he didn't deserve to know and he had yet to use me name. "I'm just gonna keep asking, mate"
"Will yer shut up, yeh don't deserve to know...yeh turned yer back on her, her whole life so don't think I'm going to let yeh waltz in whenever yeh feel like it"
"That was for Ilizabeth's safety, you have no idea what her mother would have done to her had I showed her even an ounce of sympathy or affection like a father should have" he argued but I just frowned standing up off the ground as my legs were cramping and started pacing the small amount of floor space in me cell hearing the constant guard footfalls down the hall which had been placed there after Liza escaped. "I know that I'm responsible for her falling into madness, torturing her but I did it for her own good to save her the pain of her mother's other guards doing worse, I saved her life more times than I'd like to count when she challenged them, embarrassed them in front of her mother which would end in their own torture...everything I did was for her own good" I frowned at his massive speech not sure whether to even believe it since Liza had been put through hell and it wasn't my place really.
"Don't tell me that, tell yeh daughter"
"I will once I get me heart" he replied and I rolled my eyes.
"Yeh honestly think she'll believe ya after you get what you want?" I asked him leaning against the iron bars. "Trust me, I know Liza better than yeh and if yeh say all that after yeh get yer heart she'll think yer just saying it, yeh need to tell her before yeh get yer heart"
"I know my daughter, I've been there since she was born" I chuckled.
"Yer have no idea who yeh daughter is, or what she's capable of...take it from someone whose seen just about every side of her but even I still don't know everything about her, she'll always leave yeh expecting the unexpected and yeh'll never truly understand her" I argued then turned and retreated further in me cell signalling I was done talking to him but before I got too far we heard a commotion down the hall and the guards were running out of the dungeons.
"What the bloody hell?" Ace asked trying to look down the corridor.
"Liza" I spoke moving towards the bars since it's the only thing it could be but again before we could dwell too much on it, there was suddenly a gust of wind and a large purple whirlwind which quickly faded and showed the Hatter.
"Hatter!" Ace exclaimed excited and he turned to him.
"Knave" the Hatter nodded at him.
"Knave?" I repeated looking at Ace.
"An old tittle I used to have before I got demoted to Ace of hearts" he shrugged as the Hatter fetched the keys which truly were cliché to be hanging within view...the cruelest of tortures in me opinion.
"So what's yeh real name?" I questioned since as far as I'd always known him he'd gone by Ace, even Liza just knew him as Ace.
"Will Scarlet" he shrugged and I looked at him before laughing and he glared towards me.
"Shut it sea-rat"
"Time, running out" the Hatter spoke to himself which drew my attention back to him as he slid the key into the lock on my cell.
"Where's Lizzie?" I asked him but he didn't reply. "Where is she?!" I demanded more forcibly but he continued to ignore me which lead me to share a look with Ace.
"Hatter answer him, where the bloody hell is my daughter?" he asked him when he unlocked his cell but again he didn't answer and that was it, I left my cell marching towards him and grabbed his coat pushing him against the bars stopping him from unlocking Liza's father.
"Where the hell is me fiancé?!"
"I've been considering words that start with the letter M...moron...mutiny..." he ranted insanely and I glared tightening my hold seeing ace roll his eyes
"We're looking for an L word right now mate, where is Lizzie?" he asked him.
"Lizzie...Lizzie...she's distraction-"
"She's what?!" I asked letting him go and he went right back to unlocking the lock on Ace's cell letting him out. "What the hell is she thinking?"
"For you, for you...all for you" the Hatter chanted sounding more insane than usual to me.
"For me?" I questioned before I let out a growl through my teeth since it sounded like something Liza would bloody do. "I'm going to get her"
"Can't, too late" the Hatter argued.
"I don't care!" I exclaimed.
"I promised, I promised...she made me promise...said to give you this" he continued to argue and my eyes widened when he pulled out Liza's necklace and hanging next to the hook pendant was her ring.
"She...she gave you these?" I took them it from him and let it hang from my hand.
"Said I had to get you out, mirror" he pulled out a small mirror.
"My looking glass!" Ace exclaimed immediately taking it from him.
"As well as this" he pulled out a box which had a glowing outline.
"My heart" Ace said more reserved this time and hesitated before taking it from him too and I glared at him since that meant he got what he wanted while Liza was who knows where sacrificing herslef for me and for him but he looked up at me. "She's not planning on coming back, I know my daughter would never have given these up without her end of the bargain if she thought she was coming back" I frowned and nodded in agreeance with him.
"Where was she going?" I demanded turning back to the Mad Hatter.
"Gone, gone to face her Aunt"
"She's got to be upstairs somewhere" Ace replied and I looked up.
"Take me to her, now!" I told the Hatter since he had that hat in which he'd used to get in here which he could use to get me to her.
"Can't...can't...can't"
"It's limited sea-rat, the same amount of people who go through has to come back and he's already on a trip coming in here"
"I don't care, make it work!"
"He can't, now you need to calm down" Ace exclaimed making me shoot a glare towards him. "Your not going to help Ilizabeth by loosing your head, now we're going to rescue my daughter but I need you level headed" I frowned not thrilled with him taking charge but I nodded my head since if we got to Liza I didn't care.
"Alright, for now we're in agreeance" I said placing Liza's necklace and ring around my neck, wasn't my style but I wasn't losing them and I was going to glue them on her when I got to her along with a serious talk about martyring herself like this especially after the last time she'd done something this stupid.
