Grey – Chapter 16
Cassern
Logan's POV
A week has gone by since I found out that my co-worker, Jordan Parrish is a Hellhound. It took some time but I think Parrish is starting to figure out something is not right. I've working night shifts all week, so I'm pretty exhausted… a lot of noise complains and unexplained happenings aka supernatural happenings.
Currently, I'm on patrol when I hear something from dispatch "Unit 7, can you 10-9? I didn't quite get that." They say over the radio "10-4 dispatch. I'm southbound loping in the middle of the road." Unit 7 radios, "Seven, clarify 'loping'." Dispatch inquires. "Running on all fours. Suspect is possibly a large animal." Unit 7 explains. This gets my attention I start up my cruiser and drive off. I continues to listen to the radio dispatch as I ride around "Unit 5 to dispatch, I'm turning the corner on Lincoln. Suspect is no longer loping but running." Unit 5 radios, "10-4 Unit 5. Clarify 'running'?" Dispatch asks "Two legs. Moving fast." Unit 5 responses. "Copy. What's your speed?" Dispatch asks, "45 to 50. Advise that suspect is too large to be human." Unit 5 radios.
Too large to be human… what kind of creature are they chasing? "10-4 Unit 5. Back off and maintain eyes. Dispatch to all units; be on the lookout for suspicious bipedal animal." Dispatch announces. "Unit 8 to Dispatch, advise coming up on Taft. Animal is back on all fours and… Holy!" Unit 8 shouts, I hear his cruiser skidding over the radio. "Unit 8 this is Stilinski, report." The Sheriff says over the radio, "10-4 Sheriff, suspect just leapt over my car." Unit 8 responses. "Dispatch, I have eyes on the suspect, corner of Union headed north towards Beacon Hills High School. Confirm: back on all fours." Unit 5 says, "10-4. Can you give his '20?" Dispatch radios, "In my rearview mirror coming towards me! Advise suspect is—Oh my god!" Unit 5 shouts. "Clark! Back off!" The Sheriff shouts then I hear a car crash. "All available units to Beacon Hills High School, proceed with caution." Dispatch warns.
I turn on my siren and speed to the school. I get in record time and get out of my cruiser "This is Unit 6, I'm here at the school." I radio, "Grey, wait for back-up!" The Sheriff radios. I don't… I turn down my radio and chant a protection spell over myself. I walking through the school cautiously with my gun drawn. Suddenly, I hear a growl followed by huge footsteps I turn around aiming my gun, coming face to face with a large creature. It's covered in darkness and has bright eyes it bares its teeth at me and lets out a mighty roar. I try to shoot off a round from my gun but I'm too late, it backhands, sending me across the hallway. I land hard, my vision blurry… I see it barreling towards me, I aim my weapon fire off rounds. It does nothing to the creature but for some unknown reason as it barrels towards me it turns down a different hallway. I drop my weapon and grab my radio "Officer… down. I repeat… Officer… down." I struggle to say. I try to keep my eyes open for as long as I can, I hear footsteps coming towards me and my name being called "Grey! Grey! Hold on!" The Voice shouts… I think it's… The Sheriff, everything goes black.
I hear rhythmic beeping… I try to open my eyes but I can't. A few more minutes go by and I finally pry my eyes open… everything is so bright… I'm in a hospital room… I remember, I got attacked by some large creature… I've never seen anything like it before. The door opens to my room, it's Nurse McCall "Hey, Logan. "You're awake, good." She said. She checks my vitals and my I.V. "Everything's normal. You're healing normally." She states but it almost sounds like a question. I clear my throat, Nurse McCall hands me a cup of water with a straw. I take a few sips and clear my throat again "Was there a question?" I ask her, my voice is a little gravelly, "Well, you're a… witch. I kinda assumed that you would have some sort of kind of super healing." She voices. I chuckle a little "Unfortunately, I don't. I'm as human as you, I heal like a normal human." I tell her, she nods understanding. "Well, you need to be under observation for the next 24 hours." Nurse McCall tells me then she leaves, I close my eyes and go back to sleep.
I wake up again to my name being called "Logan." My Little Brother greets timidly "Julian, hey buddy." I greet gravelly smiling a little. Julian takes a couple steps towards me "Are you… okay?" He asks, "Yeah, just a little banged up." I answer. Julian looks down at the fiddling with the ring on his index finger "What happened?" He asks, "And please don't lie." He adds. I sigh "Look, I really am just banged up… but I was attacked by a creature I've never seen before, luckily I casted a protection spell on myself otherwise I would be more than just 'banged up'." I explain to him, "What kind of creature was it?" Julian asks. "It was a huge creature, covered in darkness with bright eyes. It looked like a giant wolf but… I don't know." I say looking off into space trying to forget but I can't. Julian grabs my hand "Logan, don't… just be careful next time, okay. I don't know what I'd if I lose you." He tells me, laying his head on my lap, "I know, buddy. I know, I'm sorry." I tell him apologizing. I hold back tears closing my eyes trying to go back to sleep.
I wake up again, someone is in the room, I look around really to hex whoever it was then I let out a sigh of annoyance. It's Nathaniel "Why are you here?" In fact, how did you get in here?" I ask him. Nathan isn't his usual condescending self, in fact… his demeanor is serious, very serious. I shallow a lump in my throat, I don't like this "What happened?" He asks me but it seems more like a demand. I sigh and tell him what I told Julian, especially about the creature that attacked me and what it looked like "The Beast of Gevaudan." Nathan whispers hauntingly. I look at him shocked "What?!" I shout, "That's… that's impossible." I say in disbelieve, I thought that was a myth, a bedtime story. I shack my head at the possibly "Yes, it's possible. It's been resurrected, by who am not sure. I've been trying to figure that out since I came to this town." Nate tells me. So, he really was in town for business… of the supernatural kind "Why didn't you tell me?" I ask him. Nate smirks "I could've, if you worked for me." He states, "All right." I say, Nate raises his eyebrow "All right?" He asks confused, "All right, I'll work for you." I tell him.
Nate smirks "Are you sure?" He asks, I sigh laying my head back down staring up at the ceiling "Yes." I answer, "But give me two weeks to resign as a deputy. Also, you're gonna help me track down whoever resurrected the beast or the beast itself." I tell him. Nate chuckles "And how are you going to do that? I couldn't track them down. I've tried every spell and incantation." He tells me. I roll my eyes and scoff "You rely too much on your magical prowess. I'm doing this the old-fashioned way." I declare. Nate rolls his eyes "The old-fashion way, huh. Is that how your going to track the beast?" He asks, "Help me and you'll find out." I tell him. Nathan smirks "All right, I'll help." He agrees.
I finally get discharged from the hospital, Nate just got off his phone with whoever and yet again he has a grave look on his face. "What? What is it?" I ask him a little freaked out, "It's your Brother…" He said solemnly. Numb, that's what I'm feeling right now as Nate's Driver speeds to his mansion. Nate told me that Julian got killed and came back to life as… a vampire. There aren't even any vampires in Beacon Hills, so how… I bet Wayland had something to do with it… but that doesn't matter now. What matters is that Julian is still alive… sort of, god, there is no way he's handling this well. Julian loves being a witch despite his upbringing, the magic, the spells, and now all that is gone for him.
We finally reach his mansion I rush out the car towards the big doors opening them. I see Wayland near a big staircase then I see Julian coming down the stairs "Julian…" I say uncertain, he sees me and stops on the stairs. I start to walk towards him to the stairs but Julian backs away covering up his nose and mouth, black veins appearing on his face. He really is a vampire… "Julian, it's all right." I tell him, but he shakes his head tears spilling from his eyes "No… it's not." Julian says back. Julian's… crying, he never cries, I've haven't seen him cry since he was a toddler "You're crying, why is he crying?" I ask turning to Nathan. He smirks "Well, from what I was told about newly turned vampires, everything is heightened, emotions, senses, etc." He explains. "Our blood is probably quite exquisite smelling to him. Witches' blood is quite potent to vampires, so I've been told." He adds. Okay, that makes sense, I guess… I never really put much thought into vampires. I just staked a few and moved on… but now my Little Brother is one "So… you're a vampire now." I state.
Julian nods "I'm still a witch, too." He tells me, "Wha- that's—" I start to say but I'm interrupted, "Impossible, I know. But apparently my brand of Witch, can be both, a vampire and a witch, a hybrid." Julian explains. My eyes widen at this new information "So, you can still do magic?" I ask, Julian nods "Yeah, tried a spell earlier and it worked. It was so easy." He answers smiling. I haven't Julian this happy since I gave him that ring "Guess, you won't be needing that anymore." I say pointing to it. Julian fiddles with the ring on his index finger looking down at it "No, I-I want to keep it." He tells me, I nod "Okay." I say smiling a little. There's a tense silence before anyone speaks "So, you ready to go home?" I ask him, Julian shakes his head "No, not yet. I think… I should stay here and get a handle on my new abilities before I return home." He answers. I frown "Are you sure?" I ask, Julian nods. I sigh, damn… I can't leave him alone with these two "Guess, I'll be staying too." I say, "What?" Julian asks surprised "There's no way I'm leaving you with these two." I add gesturing to Nathan and Wayland. Nate leads to a guest room "Here's were you'll stay be sleeping." He says, I nod "Good night." He tells me, "Night." I say back. Nate starts to leave but I stop him "Wait, hold on." I say. Nate turns around to face me. I reach my arm back and punch him in his jaw, he groans painfully "What was that for?" He asks, "That was for turning my Little Brother into a vampire." I state. Nate glares at me "I didn't turn him." He states. "Not directly but I know your responsible for it somehow so the blame falls on you." I throw back then I sigh shaking my head "Night." I say again and slam the door close. I sigh again and collapse on the guest bed staring up at the ceiling, thinking… a hybrid… my Little Brother is a hybrid, part witch, part vampire. The possibilities, Julian will definitely love being able to use magic at will, having his own magic… finally. But being a vampire will be difficult, maybe I could ask Nate about some blood banks, I don't know.
The next morning, I get up and go downstairs. Man, this place is huge, somehow I find the kitchen and Nate is making coffee "Morning." He greets "Morning." I greet back, "There's breakfast in the dining room. I yawn as I walk into the dining… breakfast, more like breakfast buffet, there's an assortment of different breakfast foods and fruits. Nate hands me a mug of coffee "Here, black with lots of sugar." He said with a smile. I give him a look "Thanks." I say, "Go ahead, have a seat. Wayland and Julian should be down shortly." He adds then goes back into the kitchen. I sit down and sipped my coffee, how the hell does he know how I like my coffee? Nate walks back into the dining room holding a glass of mysterious red liquid, he sets it on the table near me. I stare at it for a moment and realize what is it "Is that—" I start to ask but Nate answers my question "Yes, it is blood." He tells me.
I continue to stare at the glass "Uh… so, does Julian only have to drink blood?" I ask him, "I mean, can he still eat human food or is that just a waste of time?" I add starting to panic a bit. Nate smirks "As long as Julian keeps a healthy diet of blood, he can eat whatever food he likes." He explains, I nod understanding and relieved. Wayland enters the dining room "Morning Brother. Morning Logan." He says greeting both of us and sits next to Nate, "Morning Wayland." Nate greets back, "Yeah, Morning." I greet a little peeved. A few minutes later, Julian enters "Morning Little Bro." I greet, "Morning." He greets back and sits down next to me. "Morning, Julian." Nathan greets, "Morning." Julian greets back. Julian look at all the food on the table then spots the glass of blood and those black veins appear on his face… "Hey, you all right, Julian?" I ask concerned, "Yeah—yeah, it's just the blood. I thought vampires couldn't food?" Julian asks. Nathan tells Julian what he told me earlier then Julian chugs the glass of blood, after he chugged it, he glances at Wayland. He smiles at Julian, and Julian smiles back… what the hell? When did this happen? Anyway, everyone starts to their breakfast.
Everyone finishes eating "Are you going back to work?" Julian asks but I can tell he's concern about me going back to work, "Nope, I'm still on medical leave. I have something to do and Nate's going to help me." I say glancing at him. Nate smirks "Am I now?" He questions, I glare at him "Yes, you are." I state, Nate chuckles, "All right, I'll help you." He said. Nate passes a book to Wayland "Here's our bestiary, there's a chapter about vampires. There strengths, weaknesses, and abilities but don't forget Julian's still a witch so some of those weaknesses could be moot." He explains, Wayland nods.
Nate and I are in his Black SUV as his driver takes us to my house "After your showered and dressed, what will you do?" Nate asks. I sigh "Well, I'm going to go the Sheriff's Station to put in my resignation." I tell him. He looks at me a little shocked "What?! I thought—" Nate says surprised, "Thought what?" I ask back. Nate clears his throat "Well, last night, I thought you rescinded your offer to work for me." He explains. I scoff "What? Because I punched you in the jaw, please." I say, rolling my eyes, "Oh, well, as much as I want you to send in your resignation. You may want to hold off." He tells me. I raise my eyebrow "Why?" I ask, "While you were in the hospital, The Sheriff got hurt on duty and is now in the hospital." He explains, "Oh." I say. That sucks… not sure what I can do but hope he makes a speedy recovery. I exhale "Okay, I'm working for you, so am I getting paid?" I ask him. Nate smirks "Of course. You'll be paid handsomely with benefits." He tells me. "Benefits, huh. And what does that entail?" I ask curious. "I have it all in writing, you can read yourself." He tells me, I roll my eyes.
We finally get to my house I shower and put on some fresh clothes. I'm back in the SUV with Nate "So, how do we track this Beast?" Nate asks, "We go back to the crime scene." I tell him. We're at the school, it's closed and we are cloaked so no one can see us. I track where the creature left me, I look around trying to find anything out of the ordinary and find a strange black substance on the floor "What is this?" I mumble. I crouch down to get a closer look, I hover my hand over it, close my eyes, and mutter a spell. Suddenly, I'm seeing images of the Beast and… what the hell am I seeing? They look like something from a horror movie. I stand back up on my feet "What did you see?" Nate asks, "See for yourself." I tell him. Nate crouches down hovering his hand over the substance and mutters the same spell and sees what I see. He stands back up with a grim look on his face "What? What is it?" I ask him, Nathan exhales calmly "The Dread Doctors." He states. Dread Doctors? Who are The Dread Doctors?
