Grey – Chapter 19
Cassern
Logan's POV
After investigating the black blood at the School and taking a sample of it, we go back to my House "So, who are The Dread Doctors?" I ask again. Nathaniel takes a moment before he starts to explain "These Doctors… if you can even call them that. They've been around for atleast 200 years, they experiment on supernatural creatures including themselves. It's probably what makes them almost untraceable to magic. I've been tracking them down for two years, they leave a trail of bodies wherever they go. It's been a real pain…" He finishes. I digest what I've just been told… so, Nathan isn't the Diabolical Witch I make him out to be or he is and he's just being diabolical for good. "So, you've been after these guys for awhile, huh." I state, Nate nods, "To what end?" I ask. Nathan gives me a cold look "To end them, of course." He said, "Do you have a problem with that?" He asks. I don't think I do "Nope. In fact, I think I'll help you." I tell him. Nate smirks "Good." He says, guess we're in agreement.
I'm at The Sheriff's Station so I can put in my resignation, I see Deputy Parrish at his desk "Hey, Parrish. Is the Sheriff in?" I ask. Parrish nods "Hey, Grey. He's in his office. Uh, aren't you still on medical leave?" He asks, I shrug my shoulders "I guess." I say not sure. I knock on the office door "Come in!" the Sheriff calls out, I open the door and come in. The Sheriff has a sling on his arm "Hey, Grey. Ready to come back to work?" He asks. "Uh, no. Actually… here." I say handing him my resignation paper, he takes my papers and looks at them "Resignation… are you serious?" He asks. I sigh nodding "Yes, I'm serious." I tell him, "Is this because you got hurt?" He asks. I shake my head "No… yes, but no… other things are happening in my life and they have to take priority first." I explain. The Sheriff looks at me sorrowfully "Is… is this about your Brother?" He asks. I narrow my eyes at him, did Stiles tell him, how much did he tell him? "What do you know?" I ask him. The Sheriff sighs "Not much, just that something happened to him." He replies. I rub my eyes tiredly and sigh deeply "My Brother…he… he died, then he came back life…" I explain. "That's—that's good right?" He asks confused, "Yes and no. Julian did come back to life, not as a witch… but as a vampire." I tell him. The Sheriff's eye widened "I—I… Those are real?" He asks in disbelieve, I nod "It's lucky, you've never ran into them. But if you do, you stake them in the heart with wood immediately." I tell him. The Sheriff slumps into his chair tired "This supernatural stuff is exhausting." He says, I scoff "Tell me about it." I say agreeing with him. There's a small silence before any of us "So, this is it." The Sheriff states, I nod "Yeah, I guess so." I say, "Well, I wish you good luck in whatever you do next." He said. "Thank you. And good luck with this town." I tell him, The Sheriff chuckles "Yeah, thanks." He says.
I go back home to find Nathan still here and someone else, he looks like a lawyer, expensive suit and all "Hi Nate. Who is this?" I ask. Nathan smiles "A witness." He replies vaguely. I raise an eyebrow confused "A witness to what?" I ask again, "To this." Nathan says and hands me some papers. I look at them "Oh." I say out loud sitting down, it's the contract that will officially have me working for Nathaniel. I look over it, very professional "Uh, what is this part?" I ask confused, "Ah, yes that. When you sign this, you and those you care for will share in my family's magic but only a quarter of it." He explains. "So, Julian and I get a magical boost?" I ask, Nate nods "That includes your other younger sibling, what was his name?" He asks, "Hunter." I answer. Hunter… I meant to take him with us but everything happened so fast, with our Parents kicking out Julian and everything else, I didn't want to leave him with them… god knows what there filling his head up with. Speaking of them "Hey, my Parents… they don't…" I start to ask. "No. Absolutely not, they get nothing from me or my Family, or you." Nate tells me steely, I nod "Good." I say, they don't deserve anything… from any of us. I sigh deeply and sign the contract with my signature, suddenly I feel a strange warmth throughout my body "What the…" I whisper. Nathan smirks "Welcome to the Family, Logan." He says, I give him a small smile back "Thanks." I say back. I wonder if Julian and Hunter felt that same warmth? It feels like I just made a deal with the devil, but atleast it's with a devil I know.
The lawyer type guy leaves afterwards and now we are going find out where those Doctors are. Nate grabs a map of Beacon Hills and lays it out on the table. I take out the vial of black blood and pour it over the map "Natura mali, quaerimus volentibus." I chant over it and keep chanting the spell as the blood moves to a certain location on the map then it stops. Nate and I look down at the map "Do you know where this is?" Nathan asks, I shake my head "Can't say that I do." I tell him. He sighs "This is going to be a night." He says stating the obvious.
A long drive later and we arrive at the entrance of some underground tunnels, Nate sighs "You know my driver could've taken us here." He grumbles. I roll my eyes "I get it your made of money. But sometimes we have to get our hands dirty… can't throw money at everything." I chastise. Nate scoffs "I can get my hands dirty, trust me." He says smirking. We go into the tunnels following the map, it leads us to another entrance "A operating theater?" I question rhetorically. It's old, wet, and abandoned "It's definitely where they operated." Nate states. I look around and see a mural on the theater wall, it's a painting of the beast "Look." I say to Nathan, he sees what I see "The Beast of Gevaudan." He whispers. I can't take my eyes off the mural… The Beast… it could've killed me but it didn't, for whatever reason. I feel a hand grip my shoulder, I look to my side, it's Nathan "You're okay. You hear me, you're okay." He tells me. I nod and take a deep breath "I'm gonna take a look around." Nate says "Are you gonna be alright?" He asks. I nod again "Yeah." I answer. Nate explores to the theater and I look back at the mural, this beast has to go down doesn't matter if it's me or someone else who takes out. Enough lives have been taken and ruined by this thing.
"Logan! In here!" Nate calls out, I find him in room full of large transparent tubes. There's four of them to be exact, three of them are empty but last one is full of a strange green liquid… and I think someone inside it. "Is there—" I start to ask, "Yes, I think there is." Nate answer before I can finish my question. "Ruptura." Nate chants, the tube start to crack then it shatters, breaking the tube. Green liquid gushes out onto the floor then the body tumbles onto the floor. Nathan turns the body over telekinetically "Hmm, nice body." He comments, "This is a werewolf. what is a wolf doing in this large test tube?" I ask. "These Doctors do a lot of experiments. So, who knows what they used this wolf for." Nathan states. I look down at the wolf in question, when it's eyes snap open, blood red eyes "Get back!" I shout backing away. The Wolf slashes its claws nearly getting me. I pull out my gun, it's loaded with wolfsbane bullet and let out a shot kneecapping the wolf. It growls in pain shouting in a language I don't understand, it sounds… German, I think? I keep my gun aimed at The Wolf, it glares at me then looks at Nathan and he looks shocked "Herr Schwarz?" He asks. Nathan narrows his eyes at the wolf "Wie heißt du Soldat?" He asks back, "Herr Schwarz, Sie sind keinen Tag gealtert." He says to Nathan. "Ich glaube nicht, dass wir uns getroffen haben." Nathan says to the wolf, "Nathaniel Black?" The Wolf asks, Okay… I understood that. "Ja, benannt nach meinem Großvater." Nate Answers, "Ah ich sehe. Du bist sein Ebenbild." The Wolf says, "Also hast du mit meinem Großvater im Krieg gearbeitet." Nathan states, "Ich tat." The Wolf replies. Nathan sighs "Hmm, that's a shame." He says then looks to me "Logan, can have your weapon please." He asks.
I hesitantly hand it over to him Nate takes it and points it at The Wolf "No!" It shouts, a shot rings out striking the wolf between the eyes. The Wolf's body falls to the floor with a thud, Nate shoots it two more times in the chest, center mass "Here." Nate says handing me my gun back. I take it and holster it "What did he say?" I ask Nathan curious, "Nothing important, just that he's from World War ll." He answers vaguely. Nathan stares at the dead wolf for a moment then turns his attention to me "Logan, can you create a barrier where no one can enter and nothing can get out. Except for us." He requests. I nod "Terminus fortis, patentibus prope." I chant, the barrier is in place. Nathan nods "Thanks." He says with a small smile, "Ignis." He chants and the body catches on fire and starts to spread around the room "Come on." Nate says ushering me to follow him and I do. The Theater is engulfed in flames… I guess, that's it then.
The drive home was silent… a tense silence. We enter his mansion, Nate goes upstairs without a word and I go into the kitchen and grab a beer from the fridge then go to the living room, and plop myself on the couch open my beer and take a swig. What did that wolf say to Nate that put him in such a mood? The door opens revealing Julian and Wayland "Logan, you're back." Wayland states, "That I am." I say back "And is my Brother here, too?" He asks. I nod "Yep, he's upstairs." I answer, Wayland rushes upstairs to Nathan. Julian looks at me worried and I give him a small smile "Hey, Little Bro. What's up?" I greet. He doesn't say anything for a minute and takes a breath through his nose "Where—where were you?" He asks me. I must be tired from tonight because I can't seem to read the room "I-uh, I was tracking down the beast that attacked me, with Nate." I tell him honestly. Julian looks at me confused and angry "So… that's where you've been for the past week. Hunting the beast that almost killed you!" Julian says shouting on the last part. I glare at him; he's gotten much more expressive since becoming a vampire "Julian…" I start to say but he interrupts me "No. You said you would be more careful—" Now I interrupt him, "Julian, I was careful. I had Nate with me." I say trying to reassure him. Julian looks away trying to calm down.
I sigh putting down my beer on the table getting up from the couch, I walk over to Julian and pull into a hug "I'm sorry." I whisper to him, "Me too." He whispers back. I let go of him and sit back down on the couch "So, I hate to ruin this moment we're having but, I have to ask you something." I state. Julian gives me his full attention "What is it with You and Wayland?" I ask him. Julian raises his eyebrow confused "I mean, I don't mind that you like dudes but, why him?" I add. Julian shrugs his shoulders and looks away "Okay, you don't have to tell me, that's fine. When you're ready." I tell him. I start to get up to leave "I—he—" Julian starts to say, I stop to give him my undivided attention "He's the only one to ever accept me for the kind of Witch I was. Besides you." He explains. I…I didn't know that, guess the demon spawn is good for something "I-I didn't know that." I say. I look at my Brother somberly "Julian…" I say then I pull into another hug "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, that this our life. I just wanted you to have a fresh start, away from our hometown, our family… I never thought…" I say, but I don't finish my sentence. "I know, Logan. I know." Julian whispers, I let him go "Just be careful, okay." He says, I nod "I will." I tell him. Julian goes upstairs.
I grab my beer and finish it off. I go back to the kitchen and grab two more beers from the fridge because it seems like that kind of night. I make my way upstairs walking through the hallway towards my guest room, I pass by the study and notice Nate is in there sitting alone. I go inside and sit next to him "Hey." I say greeting him, he says nothing. I sit next down next to him "What did that Wolf say to you?" I ask him once again, "Not tonight." He whispers gravelly. "Okay." I say as I lean back on the couch we're sitting on. I hand him one of the two beers and he takes it; I pop it open and take a swig. I sigh, guess Nate will tell me eventually. Working for him will be… interesting, to say the least.
