Chapter 5
"Ticki, Spots on!"
A pink aura surrounded Marinette as Ticki got sucked into Marinette's earrings. A red suit and mask with black polka dots appeared on her, red ribbons wrapped around her pigtails, and a yoyo with the same color scheme appeared around her waist. Marinette, now Ladybug, spun around, lifting her leg up high, and struck a pose, the ladybug symbol appearing behind her as her transformation was now complete.
Adrien's eyes widened as he watched Ladybug transform into the same costume she wore before. Plagg hid behind Adrien again, meowing warily, his tail sticking up in fright.
"Wow, it's like you're a whole different person." Adrien said.
"Well, that's the point." Ladybug replied. "Don't want the guards recognizing my true identity." She made her way towards the window. Seeing as Adrien was hesitant to follow, she said, "Well, don't just stand there. Come on."
Ladybug wrapped her yoyo string around the window hook and proceeded to slide down to the ground.
Adrien grabbed Plagg and his sword, heading over to the window.
"Look at the world, so close and I'm halfway to it,"
He stared down at the ground below, beginning to have second thoughts about leaving the tower.
"Look at it all, so big, do I even dare?"
What if he didn't make it back in time? He gazed over at the painting on the wall.
"Look at me there, at last, I just have to do it." "Should I...?"
Adrien shook those thoughts away. No! He has waited 18 years of his life for this. No more waiting!
"You got this, Adrien. Just take a deep breath and go for it." Ladybug called out from below.
"Here I go!"
With that, Adrien exhaled, wrapped his hair around the window hook, and slid down. He paused an inch above the grass, a look of awe in his eyes, for he is seeing grass for the first time. Slowly, he let his feet touch the ground, the feeling of the grass on his bare feet being new and exciting. Adrien proceeded to rub his hands along the blades of grass, picking up some grains of dirt and letting it fall between his fingers. Plagg jumped down and started rolling around in the dirt.
"Just smell the grass, the dirt, like I'd dreamed they would be,"
Adrien noticed a dandelion and looked at it in curiosity, watching as the breeze blew the dandelion seeds apart and carried them through the air.
"Just feel the summer breeze, the way it's calling me,"
Adrien stood up and ran after the dandelion seeds, abruptly stopping when he felt something wet brush past his feet. He looked down and smiled to see he had stepped into a shallow pond. He reached into the water and splashed some in the air, the cool, wet, drops splashing his face.
"For the first time ever, I'm completely free,"
A little blue bird flew by Adrien, giving a little chirp before flying off into the sky. He looked ahead and took off towards the little cave opening.
"I can go running, and racing, and dancing, and chasing, and leaping,"
Adrien just had to run through the cave to the other side. Then, he would truly be free.
"And bounding, hair flying, heart pounding, and splashing, and reeling, and finally feeling,"
Adrien bolted through the cave and into the woods surrounding him on the other side, his long, golden hair dragging behind him. He paused and looked up at the sun shining brightly in the sky through the tall trees, stretching his arms towards the welcoming warmth.
"This is when my life begins."
Adrien looked around, taking a moment to realize what he just did.
"I can't believe it! I did it!" He cheered proudly.
"I left the safety of my tower." Adrien's obedient side pointed out.
"But I'm finally outside!" He counter argued.
"Outside with all the dangers Mother told me about." His obedient side argued back.
"Mother will be furious." Adrien sat down on a rock afloat in a small pond with lillies, contemplating his decision some more. "Well, what Mother doesn't know won't hurt her." He said to himself.
Ladybug watched from a distance, leaning her hand against a tree, frowning at Adrien's contemplation.
"This is so fun!" Adrien rolled down a small hill and kicked a pile of leaves, laughing happily.
A minute later, he leaned his head against a tree, groaning. "I broke Mother's trust. I have to go back."
"I'm never going back!" Adrien cartwheeled across the grass, flopping down and rolling around, wrapping in his hair like a burrito.
"I'm a terrible son." Adrien moaned, facing down in a flower bed. Ladybug sat nearby, rolling her eyes in annoyance.
"Woohoo! Best Day Ever!" Adrien cheered as he swung around a tree with his hair.
Adrien leaned against a boulder covered in moss, his head in his knees.
Ladybug, getting tired of this, decided to take the matter in her own hands and calm him down. She squatted down and put a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, it seems you're quite at war with yourself. I understand."
Adrien looked up at her. "You do?"
Ladybug nodded. "Yeah, overprotective mother, forbidden road trip. This is serious stuff," she gave him a reassuring smile. "Here's some advice. This is all part of growing up. A little rebellion, a little adventure here and there, it's good for you. Healthy even."
Plagg climbed up Ladybug's shoulder and gave her a suspicious eye. Ladybug shrugged and put the kitty down.
"You really think so?" Adrien said with a hopeful look in his eyes.
"I know so." Ladybug replied, helping him up to his feet. "Trust me, you're overthinking this. Does your mother deserve it? Maybe not. Will it break her heart? Perhaps. But you got to do it to get over your fears? Yes."
Adrien held up his sword and smiled proudly. "You're right! I have to do this, for me!"
Plagg gave him an odd look.
"For us!" Adrien corrected.
Ladybug sighed. This was not what she intended. She meant to scare him back to the tower so that she can get back her satchel and go on about her business. Dang it her and her power of luckyiness
Suddenly, a bush nearby rustled.
"Eek!" Adrien jumped in Ladybug's arms, pointing his sword towards the bush.
"Is it criminals? Thugs? Have they come for me?"
The bushes rustle again, and the figure reveals itself. To Adrien's relief, it was just a bunny.
"Stay calm. It can probably sense fear." Ladybug told him.
"Oh." Adrien got out of Ladybug's arms, rubbing his head in embarrassment. "My bad."
He then pointed his sword in front of him again, comically looking around. "Well, if there are any criminals or thugs around, they will have to speak to my blade first!" He said with determined confidence.
Ladybug couldn't help but chuckle at his quick change of demeanor. "Well, let's just avoid them altogether." she replied. "Anyways, are you hungry? I know a great place for a bite."
"Sure am." Adrien said. "Where?"
Plagg circled Ladybug's legs, meowing in question.
"You'll see." Ladybug said, gesturing for him to follow. "It's a small place, so you can get used to a small crowd."
"Alright." Adrien said, Plagg meowing in agreement.
With that, the trio made their way through the woods, making their way towards this place where they can grab a bite to eat.
(In another area of the woods)
The horse sniffed the ground, trying to track Ladybug's scent. He paused by a tree, noticing a piece of paper stuck to it. Taking a closer look, the horse realized it was a wanted poster of Ladybug, the drawn image a clear distinction...after covering the nose with her hoove. With a growl, the horse ripped the poster off the tree and chewed it up, now more determined to find Ladybug and bring the thief to justice. The horse took another whiff of the air.
A scent.
Quickly, the horse duck behind a bush, prepared to surprise the stranger.
After a moment, the horse jumped over the bush and in front of a woman, who happened to be Mother Natalie.
"Woah!" Mother Natalie backed away a little, holding her basket close.
Realizing it wasn't Ladybug, the horse gave a disappointed snort.
"A palace horse." Mother Natalie recognized. "What's a palace horse doing out here? Wait a minute, where's your rider?" Mother Natalie's eyes widened with a gasp as the worst thoughts came to her. "Adrien!"
Dropping her basket, Mother Natalie ran as fast as she could through the woods, through the cave, and back to the tower.
"Adrien, let down your hair!" Mother Natalie called out, breathing heavily from running.
No answer.
"Adrien!?" Mother Natalie called out again.
Still no answer.
Mother Natalie rushed to the tower's entrance door, which she blocked out with a bunch of stones years ago to prevent Adrien from sneaking out. She opened the door with some force, dug through the rocks, and ran up the tower stairs to the top floor. She reached a secret trapdoor, which she pushed open and entered the kitchen.
"Adrien!" Mother Natalie shouted. "Adrien, where are you!?"
She searched everywhere. She checked Adrien's bedroom, the fireplace, behind the stairs, the closet, even ripped up curtains in desperate search of the blonde boy.
Mother Natalie then noticed something shiny peeking from under one the stairs. She pulled away the wood, finding the satchel Adrien hid from Ladybug. She reached into the bag and to her horror, pulled out the crown with the green and black jewels. She dropped it, the crown making a clattering sound as it hit the stone floor. Mother Natalie turned the satchel upside down to dump out any more contents. A piece of paper fell out. Mother Natalie unfolded it and looked carefully. It was a wanted poster of a girl named Ladybug. Adrien must have run off with this thief. Mother Natalie had to get her precious feather back before they ran into any palace guards. She must prevent Adrien from finding out the truth.
She hurried to her bedroom, opened a drawer, and took out a dagger. It was time to find Adrien and bring him back home.
