Chapter 10

Marinette was just about to pull out of their hug, when she noticed something in her peripheral vision.

No, not something, Someone.

In a boat not far away from theirs, Rena Rouge and Queen Bee stood, staring straight at her. Rena Rouge punched a fist to her palm, while Queen Bee held her stinger ready.

Marinette gulped, understanding the message.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Adrien gently pulled out of their hug and looked Marinette in the eye.

"Hm? Oh, uh, yeah, I'm fine," Marinette answered. "I just need to take care of something." she shot Ticki a concerned look, who returned it.

The two rowed back to shore, with Adrien staring worriedly at Marinette.

"I'm sorry. I got to do this thing," Marinette explained vaguely. "It won't take long."

"Well…okay," Adrien replied, still a bit worried.

"I'' be back," she grabbed the satchel. "Let's go, Ticki."

Shooting Adrien an apologetic look, Ticki followed Marinette.

Adrien frowned and squeezed the butterfly-embroidered cloth. He really hoped everything was alright.

...

Over at another shore, Queen Bee and Rena Rouge stood nearby their boat, waiting for Ladybug to show up.

"Hehey, there you two are,"

They turned around to see Ladybug approach them, satchel in her hands. "I was looking all over for you girls," Ladybug said with a plastered smile. "Sorry you got captured back at the pub, but anyways, here it is." She reached into the satchel and pulled out the crown, tossing it over to Rena Rouge. "You ladies can split the money. Case closed, and I'll now be on my merry way."

Ladybug turned around, only to bump into Queen Bee, who glared daggers at her.

"That's it?" the blonde girl challenged. "A crown and an "apology"? Did all our years of thievery and adventure mean nothing to you, traitor!?" she pulled out her stinger and before Ladybug could move, shot it into Ladybug's arm.

Ladybug groaned as she felt her body grow numb and paralyzed. She fell back, only for Rena Rouge to catch her, holding her in a grip lock.

"We're no longer interested in the crown," the fox-themed female explained with a sinister grin, "We're interested in revenge."

...

Adrien stood anxiously by the boat, looking left and right. What was taking her so long?

In the distance, a silhouette of a person came into view.

Adrien breathed a sigh of relief. "Phew, there you are. I was starting to think you ran away with the crown after all."

The silhouette turned into two, and two girls dressed in peculiar outfits appeared.

Adrien frowned. Who were these girls? Where was Ladybug?

Wait. Those were the girls brought in by the guards back at The Miracle Box!

"She did." Rena Rouge said with a malicious smile.

"What?" Adrien couldn't believe what he was hearing. "No, that can't be true."

"See for yourself." Queen Bee sneered, gesturing out to the water.

In the distance, it looked like Ladybug steering a boat towards the kingdom.

Little did Adrien know; Rena Rouge used her power of illusion to create that mirage.

"Marinette!?" Adrien was dumbfounded. "No, no! This can't be true! Marinette!"

"It was a trade," Rena Rouge said. "The crown for the boy with magical healing hair."

"Anyone would kill for the chance to stay young and healthy forever!" Queen Bee said with a laugh. She pulled out her stinger and the girls started to surround the blonde boy.

With no choice, Adrien began to run. He started to lose them, when his hair got caught on a log. He panicked, pulling his braid, desperate to get it free as those girls' footsteps grew closer.

Then, a couple groans and a thud.

"Adrien!?" that was Mother Natalie's voice.

"Mother?" Adrien got his hair free and slowly walked back, to find Mother Natalie standing over the now unconscious girls, holding a large tree branch in her hands.

"Oh, Adrien!" she dropped the branch and put her hand to her heart. "My precious boy."

"Mother!" Adrien ran into Mother Natalie's arms, hugging her tightly.

"Are you alright? Did you get hurt?" Mother Natalie inspected Adrien's face.

"I'm okay." Adrien replied, "But, how did you find me?"

"I was so worried about you, my feather, so I followed you. When I saw those girls go after you, I.." she squeezed Adrien back. "Thank goodness you're okay. Quickly, before they wake up." she started walking away. Adrien took one more look back, only to find the boat gone. Wait a minute. Where did she go?

Before Adrien could think about it further, Mother Natalie came back with a lantern, her arms outstretched.

It's then that everything that just transpired hit Adrien. Marinette's betrayal, the girls' attack. It was too much for the blonde boy to handle, his eyes filling with tears. He ran into Mother Natalie's arms, the tears coming down.

"Oh Mother, you were right! You were right about everything!" he cried.

Mother Natalie patted his back. "I know, Adrien. I know." She wrapped an arm around him and with her other hand, held up the lantern as the two started heading home.

...

On the docks, several guards stood on night duty. Then, a canoe made its way to the docks. In it was Ladybug, unconscious and tied up in her own yoyo.

"It's Ladybug!" one of the guards exclaimed. "With the crown! What a lucky day!"

The guards pulled up the canoe and Ladybug out, slapping her awake.

"Ugh, my head," Ladybug moaned. "What happened?"

"Oh, I'll tell you what happened." one of the guards said with a smirk. "We finally caught the kingdom's bug thief."

This immediately brought Ladybug back to the present moment. "Wait! Adrien!"

"Come here, you pesky bug," one of the guards forced her arms behind her back and smiled, "I'm sure Captain Luka will be happy to see you."
