(Mai's Wish)
*May 16th, 1941*
*11:15 am*
*Day of the Festival*
*Jackson Private Academy*
It was nearly Noon as Nancy and Mai were walking around the festival in search of things to do before lunch.
"Man, I'm getting hungry, I wish Lunchtime would come soon cause I could go for a good meal right now" Nancy had spoken to Mai as the two girls sat on one of the available benches in order to catch their breath after a long period of walking.
"Should we catch up to the others or are you still interested in what we're doing right now? I don't mind either one" Mai had asked Nancy as she waited for her answer while Nancy began to speak.
"It's almost lunch so we should head back to the others but beforehand, Do you want a Goldfish? I saw you looking at that Fish Bowl Toss game just a few minutes ago" Nancy had spoken back to her friend as her words were met with Mai shaking her head in confirmation along with a smile on her face which made Nancy smile back.
"Wonderful, Let's get you that goldfish, okay? I know that's something that you've been eyeing for quite some time so I'm gonna make your wish come true" Nancy had assured Mai as the two girls began to make their way towards the Fish Bowl Toss in which was run by a balding man who appeared to be in his 40s.
"My name is Mr Nicholas, I run this booth here so I'm gonna explain the game and the point of this game is to simply throw one of the ping pong balls and throw it in one of the small fish bowls that has the goldfish on it and if you do, You'll win the game and collect your prize" Mr Nicholas had explained to the two girls as both girls nodded their heads in understandment while Mr Nicholas looked over at Mai in which caused him to form a scowl on his face.
"What seems to be the issue? Why are you looking at my friend like that?" Nancy asked the man in a stern tone of voice as she waited for a response from him.
"Nothing, Just reminding your little friend here that people like her don't belong in this country! This also means that she can't play my game. I don't like her kind or ANYONE who's not white" Mr Nicholas had spoken back to Nancy as his words quickly made the young girl angry much to the surprise of the man.
"Excuse me? You have no right to say those awful things! It doesn't matter what her race is nor what country she's from since she's equal and human just like the rest of us so it's wrong of you to say such things!" Nancy had shouted to the man in a fit of anger as she and Mr Nicholas engaged in a stare off for a few seconds as Mai suddenly began to speak.
"My friend is right, I belong in this country just as anyone else is. I won't allow your words of hatred to bring me down nor ruin my day and the reason is that I was always taught to stay strong in times of hate so that I could get through many tribulations'' Mai had spoken to Mr Nicholas as well while this seemed to make Nancy smile warmly before turning her direction back at the man.
"See what she's saying? Why do you and other racist people gotta be so damn hateful? I'll never understand people like you but we'll be taking our leave now so you can forget about us playing your game…" Nancy had spoken to Mr Nicholas as the man simply ignored their words as the two girls turned around so they could walk away to their next location.
"Thank you so much for defending me back there, I truly appreciate it…" Mai had thanked Nancy as she gave her a warm hug as she quickly felt Nancy returning the favor as well.
"You're welcome, I just hate when people are unfairly treated simply because of their skin color, who they like and other things. My foster parents taught me to always love and accept people so I simply learned those lessons' ' Nancy had spoken back to her friend as she suddenly looked down as she quickly felt Mai's hand rubbing her shoulder in support.
"Our friend Russell always deals with such hate simply because he's black, it just truly upsets me that there's hateful people that exist…" Nancy had ranted on as she heard Mai beginning to speak regarding the situation.
"Hey, Let's meet up with our friends, okay? We can't allow that horrible man to ruin our special day so let's make it count to the best of our ability, okay?" Mai had advised her friend as she had given her a neck hug in order to give her a sense of comfort.
"You're right, I'm just sorry that you never had gotten your goldfish but I promise that I'll make it up to you, okay?" Nancy had spoken back to her friend as her words were met with Mai shaking her head.
"No, It's okay! Just being here with the people whom I care about is what truly matters to me! You, Anya, Charlotte, Calvin, Mary, Russell, and Carrie are my wonderful friends so the presence of those people is worthwhile but I do want one request, I hope that ALL of us is able to make it to graduation. The thought of my dear friends celebrating before going our separate ways truly warms my heart…" Mai had spoken back to Nancy as those words seemed to have cheered up the young girl as she quickly got up on her feet.
"Awww, That means so much to me and I hope that your wish is able to come true in a few years but! Let's head to where Anya and the others are at because I'm so darn hungry!" Nancy had spoken back to her friend as the two girls shared a small laugh together as they eventually were ready to depart for their next location.
"I've only been in America for a few days but It truly feels like I'm at home and at peace since I have such wonderful friends…" Mai had thought to herself as she and Nancy proceeded to run towards the lunch area with many new memories and kind moments within their hearts.
