Sasuke
*The Pretext of Civility*

Friday, March 27th 6:07 PM KST
Konoha, The Five Kages

It would not really have been surprising if the festivities were delayed, given the circumstances, but Hyūgas didn't do delays.

The main banquet area opened on time and the guests filed in encouraged by the cocktail hour to be social and in good spirits. Elder Hyūga's place setting could have been removed and a table re-configured, but Hiashi asked Hinata to consider an alternate idea. After dispatching Ko to feed two or three key people the official story as to his father's whereabouts should any question arise, Hiashi asked another Hyūga to fetch Uchiha Sasuke to Lady Hyūga and himself.

Hinata made the formal request that he join them at a seat of honor, and Sasuke accepted – because those were Kakashi's instructions.

He was aware that Hiashi had multiple agendas at work, but with the capture of Sumashi, he was equally as certain it was a prudent decision.

"Look at it this way, Uchiha," Genma's voice buzzed in his ear. "No one is going to approach you for idle chit-chat or flirting while you are seated with the family."

"Oh, no doubt," Konohamaru snickered. "I overheard at least three social climbers discussing course correction for an introduction. Not even Sasuke's resting bitch face is deterring them. I bet he's trending on Ninstagram before the night's over!"

And that, Sasuke supposed, was the downside to being socially reclusive; when one did finally make an appearance, it generated more interest. To not only make a social appearance, but at an exclusive clan event and to be seated next to the young matriarch of the Hyūgas? Sasuke had already of begun to steel himself against the inevitable social interest and repercussions.

As much as he dreaded that unavoidable consequence of this assignment, he couldn't deny that the situation could be turned to their advantage. His presence at this event - specifically his sitting next to Hinata - implied an alliance of sorts between the Uchiha and Hyūga, which sent a message on two levels.

On the surface, it could indicate anything from a business arrangement between two powerful companies, to a potential merging of two families. Sasuke understood that the speculation of the nature of their alliance would be quite the topic for gossip. This was not outside of his realm of experience; he had always been somewhat in the public eye. As much as he disliked this aspect the plan, he reluctantly recognized it had its benefits. Tomorrow there would be pictures and news articles about his presence here; in no time at all, most people in the Land of Fire would know he had attended this event.

Underneath the underneath was another matter entirely. Sasuke's name carried a very different type of weight in underground circles, and it was respected almost as much as it was feared. The former student of Orochimaru, the man who killed Danzo, the sole surviving Uchiha- his reputation was fierce, and his past was draped in shadow. The general consensus was that his 'reformation' simply meant that his own darkness had been minimally contained and would now be redirected to anyone foolish enough to cross him or those to whom he was currently allied. Even those that held little respect for the man, had a healthy respect for what it meant should they take him on as an opponent.

Sasuke was well aware of the multiple motivations behind Kakashi assigning him to not only provide security for Hinata, but to also be very visibly present with the young matriarch of the Hyūga clan. Despite being a potential target for this latest threat to dōjutsu users, it would give anyone with sense pause before attempting to harm those under his direct protection.

He was still wondering at the situation when Hinata delicately cleared her throat.

"I thank you for your help in this situation," she said quietly, her voice for his ears only. "It is an honor to have you with us."

"You are kind to say so," Sasuke returned, resurrecting his more mannerly responses from years of disuse. "Any word of your Grandfather?"

"He is under Shizune's care, and has been taken elsewhere. It sounds as if he was remarkably pleasant, all things considered."

Her expression was amused, and he found his lips tipping up in spite of himself.

"I heard he insisted Pakkun ride with him," her smile grew. "I am rather sorry I missed it." Her eyes skated to his left, and she nodded. "Master Satutobi," she explained. "He and Konohamaru just took their seats."

"I haven't seen his medic," Sasuke looked around, suddenly struck by the notion.

"I am sure he is here," Hinata's eyes scanned the room. "He prefers not to sit at the table and be part of discussions if he can help it."

"We have something in common, then."

"I suppose so," she gave a small smile before reaching for her water. Moments later, Hiashi welcomed everyone to the celebration, acknowledged key guests, and introduced Hanabi to thunderous applause.

Food followed immediately after, and the room was abuzz with joyful conversation and the promise of a fantastic meal.

His conversation with Hinata was pleasant and comfortably minimal, and he found himself grateful that the attention was so wholly – and rightfully- focused on Hanabi. After the meal. Hinata and Hiashi would stand with Hanabi as others approached with well wishes and introductions, while other patrons dismissed to enjoy the ongoing pleasures of the well-planned event.

"If you hurry," Hinata whispered, "You can slip out of here and toward one of the quieter lounges before anyone realizes you've gone."

"Nonsense," he stood. "I shall be the first to pay my respects to Hanabi…and then I shall slip away."

"I might envy you," she chuckled.

"I won't be far," he met her eyes, and her smile softened.

"I appreciate that. Knowing you here for Hanabi puts my mind at ease."

With that, she excused herself.

And in that moment, she reminded him of Itachi – because he was certain she would always put her the importance of her sister's safety first. Had she been anything approaching reckless, it might even have reminded him of Naruto.

"It's like he haunts me," Sasuke muttered, and prepared to be among the first to formally greet Hanabi.

Konohamaru
*The Not-Quite Escape*

7:14 PM KST

After the meal, Konohamaru waited with his Grandfather to take their turn greeting Hanabi. He raised his eyebrows when Sasuke of all people was the first in line, but Master Sarutobi simply stroked his chin and murmured, "Clever."

When it was his turn, his Grandfather led the exchange of felicitations before engaging Hiashi in some conversation that let him have a moment with Hanabi.

He gave her a smile. "How are you holding up?"

"Let's just say I am glad I have nothing scheduled for tomorrow."

"I'll bet. You need a break?"

"Desperately," she half laughed. "But I fear that isn't an option."

"Hanabi?" Hinata stepped over to her side. "There is a break in the line, and more desserts were just put out. "Why don't you take twenty minutes to catch your breath. Konohamaru," she turned to him. "Would you mind going with Hanabi to the observation area above here?"

Konohamaru didn't know what to say, exactly, but some signal passed between the sisters, and Hinata gave him a tiny nod.

"Certainly, Lady Hyūga," he hurried to agree. "We'll be back in twenty minutes."

He tentatively offered Hanabi his arm, not sure if he was supposed to or not, and was surprised when she took it. He waited until they were out of earshot to ask. "So… who are we avoiding?"

Hanabi heaved a heavy sigh and half laughed. "His name is Chikara. He is a powerful business figure in the food industry, and his company is one of the main vendors for the hospital. He started out making noodles of all things, but branched into other foodstuffs. He isn't bad, really," she continued. "He is just a bit… overwhelming."

The pieces fell into place for Konohamaru. "He makes you uncomfortable."

"Incredibly," she admitted almost guiltily. "He seems to believe that he is irresistible to women which leads him to make odd, unsolicited, supposed-to-be-romantic gestures. Nothing sexual or lewd or unkind, mind you," she was quick to clarify. "It is how he is around pretty much all women all the time, and I know he is probably just lonely, I just…"

"Hey," Konohamaru held up his hands. "You don't have to justify how he makes you feel. If we run into him, we'll just keep our space. What's he look like?"

"You can't miss him," she snorted. "Tall. Blonde. Wears very odd western-style clothing."

"With jewels all over it?"

"Sometimes."

"And is he almost as wide as he is tall?"

Hanabi winced. "Almost."

Konohamaru gave a distracted nod. "Ok. Get behind me."

"Behind you? Why would I…?"

"Ah, Lady Hanabi!" a man called out with enthusiasm, making Hanabi turn around, eyes wide. "How wonderful to see you! Oh, hello there," He stopped short when Konohamaru stepped in front of Hanabi and smoothly held out a hand.
"Have we met?"

"Don't think we've had the pleasure," he said with a smile and a firm handshake. "Sarutobi Konohamaru Pleased to meet you."

"Ah, Master Sarutobi's Grandson," he nodded, shaking his hand. "Chikara. Pleased to meet you."

"What brings you here?" Konohamaru asked lightly while putting a bit more pressure on the heavier man's hand. Konohamaru was a head taller, but Chikara was much, much wider.

"I just wanted to congratulate Lady Hanabi on her birthday," Chikara said, blue eyes darting from Konohamaru to over his shoulder trying to see Hanabi "How exciting it all is!"

"Very," Konohamaru agreed, releasing the man's hand, but not moving out of his way. "It has been a most exciting day for Lady Hanabi, as I am sure you can imagine."

"I can imagine!" his eyes were bright. He sidestepped just enough to be able to see Hanabi. "What a milestone for you, Lady Hanabi, although not quite as large as the one in June. How lovely you look this evening!"

"Thank you," Hanabi had come a little closer, still staying angled behind Konohamaru, but without being rude.

"Oh, I nearly forgot!" Chikara moved to reach for something in his jacket, and Hanabi suddenly found herself staring at Konohamaru's back.

"Think very carefully about your next move, sir," he said quietly.

Chikara looked up at him, startled, his blue eyes wide in confusion. He slowly removed his hand from his jacket. Konohamaru tensed, but he felt a warm hand on his back.

"Konohamaru," Hanabi said quietly. "I can see that it is alright."

Konohamaru didn't move but he didn't leap to kill the other man either. Chikara very carefully pulled out the thin, flat piece of something and turned it around to them.

"M-My fiancé," he said, his voice strained. "I-I just wanted to tell Lady Hanabi about our engagement."

Konohamaru relaxed ever so slightly, but he kept the other man in a firm gaze. The warm hand that now pressed on his arm was the only thing that made him look away.

"I can see that," Hanabi repeated, eyebrows raised, waiting for him to understand.

Konohamaru blinked, waiting for his mind to catch up. She'd checked him out with the Byakugan. The man wasn't a threat.

"Sorry," she turned to Chikara. "It's been a long day and my friend here is just looking out for me. Is that Fuku?" she asked, redirecting the attention to the picture. Chikara beamed and gushed on about his fiancé, but kept a respectful distance.

Barely a moment later, one of the Hyūgas approached them and bowed politely.

"Forgive me, Lord Chikara," he interrupted apologetically, "but there are some guests who are interested in meeting you. May I direct you to them?"

"Wonderful!" Chikara beamed. "Congratulations again, Lady Hanabi," he winked audaciously at her. "I hope you have just as much good luck as I have had when it comes time for you to find your own Princess Fuku!"

"Thank you," Hanabi bowed her head low. "You are most kind."

Chikara eyed up Konohamaru before offering him the same smile. "Keep an eye on Lady Hanabi," he said cheerfully. "Not everyone is as honorable as I am. It is a good thing that she has you as a friend!" With that, he turned on his heel and swaggered back to the party. Konohamaru turned to see that Hanabi was still in a low bow, her hand over her face. It took a moment to realize her shoulders were shaking, and that she was using her Byakugan.

"He's gone," Konohamaru said dryly.

Hanabi stood straight up, and burst into laughter. She gasped in giant breaths of air, and laughed a fantastic, exuberant laugh that tugged at the corners of Konohamaru's mouth.

"You're really heartbroken, huh?" he asked.

Hanabi carefully swiped at the corners of her eyes to try to stop the tears from rolling down her cheeks. "Devastated," she gasped for air. "I may never recover."

"Don't worry," he offered. "With time and good luck, someday you will find your own Princess Fuku."

It was a good five minutes before Hanabi was composed enough to make the return to the party

"That," she said, her voice breathy from laughter, "has to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen."

"Hang around Naruto some more," Konohamaru snorted. "Then we'll talk."

"Thanks for stepping in," she said, looking up at him. "I appreciate you trying to buffer the situation."

"Well I could hardly pass up the chance to step between you and an overly romantic noodle magnate. Now. Should we head back? Hinata did mention something about dessert."

"We should," Hanabi agreed. "Besides. Any longer than twenty minutes and someone will come find us."

"Considering all of those someones report to your father, I'm gonna say we need to get back now." Konohamaru held out his arm to her with a bright smile. "Shall we?"

"This isn't an ambush dessert, right?"

"Shinobi's honor. No hats, no singing, no sparklers."

"Alright, then," she took his arm. "Dessert it is."

Tenten
*The Just Desserts*

7:43 PM KST

Tenten was sipping on a glass of sparkling water, ostensibly listening to the chatter around her as she kept a visual on Hanabi and Hinata. Genma sidled up to her and glanced at her drink.

"No ice?"

"Not tonight," she scoffed. "What do we hear about our guest?"

"Don't expect to hear much tonight. Ibiki will fill us in tomorrow."

"I almost feel sorry for him," Tenten's lips quirked into a smile. "But not quite."

"You know, Gramps spent most of his ride with he medics asking about the pretty girl back at the party. I may have video."

"I'm good for now," her eyes followed someone approaching Hinata. "I've had more than enough of him for a while. Possibly forever. Besides – I'm sure he will be back to his charmingly surly self by morning."

"That is the current prognosis, yes."

"You do know that you owe me big time, right?"

"I am aware. Figured I'd start with dessert."

"Sorry that took a moment," Ino apologized, joining them. "Is here ok, or do you need me somewhere else?"

"Here's fine," Genma gave a nod. "Just keep a visual on the girls, and go with them if they need to go anywhere the guys can't."

"Got it. Go on," she nudged Tenten. "Take a break."

"Thanks," she squeezed Ino's arm. "I won't be long." She looked to Genma. "Where am I headed?"

"Backstage," Genma jerked a thumb over his shoulder. "Dessert will be there in five. And don't worry," he held up his hands. "I know I still owe you."

"Damn straight," she handed him her glass, then to Ino, "See you in a bit."

With that, Tenten made her way through the crowd and slipped into the the room that had been set aside for those keeping an eye on the Hyūgas while they got ready.

When she opened the door, the first thing she saw was Neji, checking his phone.

"Hey," she made her way to the table set up with pitchers of water and canned beverages. "Everything okay?"

"Fine," he typed something before tucking his phone away. "Just checking in with the hospital in Suna."

"Everyone made it there ok, right?"

"Yes," he reached for his water. "Everyone is fine."

"Good," Tenten smiled, taking a seat. "I heard your Grandfather will recover to his cantankerous self."

"Considering he skipped an appointment last month and Lady Tsunade decided he might as well keep it while he was under observation, I am certain that is the case."

"Ah, well," she grinned. "It's for the best. I'm not sure I would ever get used to him actually liking me."

"It was just this side of terrifying," Neji agreed.

There was a quick knock on the door before Kiba opened it, and Akamaru bounded over to Tenten.

"Hey there, handsome," Tenten reached out to scratch his ears. "What are you doing here?"

"Bringing dessert," Kiba pushed in a cart with several plated desserts and a carafe of fresh coffee. "I'd say Gemna was compensating for earlier, but I am pretty certain Hinata had already arranged for this stuff to be available to us throughout the evening."

"She did," Neji nodded to the assortment. "But I wouldn't put it past Genma to take credit."

"True," Tenten half laughed as Akamaru nudged her for more skritches, "but he did arrange for me to take a backstage break, so I have to give him at least a little credit."

"Fair," Kiba put the carafe on the table and handed her an empty mug. "I think he sent us on break because he figured Akamaru would cheer you up."

"He does," she stroked his large white head fondly.

"What about you, Hyūga," Kiba nodded to the cart. "You joining us?"

"I just came back here to take some calls from Suna," Neji checked his watch. "I had better get back."

"More for us," Kiba shrugged, and took a seat opposite of Tenten. "Besides," he plucked a dessert from the cart, and winked at Tenten. "We have to decide where we're meeting up for our game of pool."

"Pool?" Neji blinked, flicking his eyes between Tenten and Kiba.

"Part of a bet," Tenten shrugged. "Loser pays for dinner."

"Ah," Neji sent her an understanding look. "I'll leave you to it, then."

Tenten's phone buzzed in her pocket a moment or two after the door closed behind him.

'Try not to fleece the poor fool too badly. He is Hinata's teammate, after all.'

Tenten smiled to herself and replied 'No promises,' (which she did not know made her team mate smile in spite of himself) and returned to sharing a pleasant conversation with Kiba.

Hanabi and Hinata
*Afterward*

10:45 PM KST

The party ended, the guests were thanked, and the Hyūga sisters were finally back at home. Hanabi sent Konohamaru a text that she got home safely, as promised, just as Ko alerted Hinata's team, Genma, Tenten, and Kakashi. Hinata sent Sasuke a text thanking him again for his help, and promising to send him an assortment of teas they'd discovered they both liked. Neji reminded Genma to keep him in the loop about Sumashi. Tenten congratulated Konohamaru on surviving his first Hyūga event and reminded him that there would be a debriefing next week. Tenten also sent Hanabi another 'Happy Birthday' text, checked in with Hinata, asked Temari if anyone in Suna needed to be incarcerated – a.k.a, was Naruto behaving, and reminded Lee that they would not be up for an early morning training session.

Lee and Gai insisted on accompanying Elder Hyūga to the hospital, as they were certain Neji would have normally done. Gai reported to Genma and Kakashi throughout the evening even as Lee texted Neji and Tenten. Their last collective report was that Elder was being monitored and would soon be allowed to sleep.

Neither Neji nor Tenten could formulate a reply; both sent a 'thumbs up' emoji.

Freshly showered and glad to be free of any makeup or event-worthy grooming, Hanabi flopped onto the overstuffed couch, with a contented sigh.

"You know?" she stretched before letting her head loll to the side to face her sister. "All in all, that wasn't so bad. I thought it would be way worse."

"Glad to hear it," Hinata laughed.

"I know it was as nice as it was because of you, Sis," Hanabi met her eyes seriously "Thank you. For everything."

Hinata's smile was warm. "You're welcome. Now," she scooted closer and tucked a blanket around them both. "Post-party cookies, snacks, and movie as promised."

"This makes even running into Chikara all worth it," Hanabi sighed, grabbing a still-warm cookie.

"Chikara?" Hinata blinked. "I thought we managed to get you away in time."

"Oh, he found us," Hanabi laughed. "I haven't had a chance to tell you! We were getting some air, when…"

Hanabi told Hinata about the run-in with Chikara, and was soon laughing so hard tears streamed down her cheeks.

And although she didn't mention it, it did not escape Hinata's notice that 'us' and 'we' were Hanabi and Konohamaru, and that she hadn't seen her sister laugh like that in a very, very long time.

The mood carried through the evening until Hanabi had drifted to sleep on her sister's shoulder, a smile still on her lips.

Hinata expertly extricated herself, replacing her shoulder with pillows, and tucking the blanket around her sister.

"Happy birthday, Hanabi," she murmured, kissing her forehead.

With that, she went no further than the adjoining loveseat, curled up, and drifted to sleep, with her heart full of gratitude, and dreams full of promise.
