KARA'S P.O.V
She walked toward the door after listening someone knock, expecting to see William at the other side, since he had promised her that he would help her with the few things that it was needed to take to the park for her baby cousin's birthday.
However, the moment she opened the door, she froze, not being prepared to see those blue eyes she was able to recognize everywhere or that silly smile that, at that moment, it was drawn on his face.
"Mon-El" she whispered kind of confused about what he was doing there.
"Were you expecting anyone else?" he asked, still smiling at her.
"Um, actually, yes" she answered, observing him, he looked different from the last time she had seen him. "Sorry, come on in" she said while letting him walk inside the apartment, knowing that she needed to make a question. "When did you come back?"
"Yesterday" he answered. "I wanted it to be a surprise for Halley" Mon-El explained as she realized that she should have woken Halley up.
"I can assure you that she's going to be really happy and that she's not going to leave your side" she warned him, both of them laughing. "I was about to start making breakfast before waking her up" she told him as Mon-El observed the pancakes batter that was on the kitchen counter.
"No ice cream this year?" he asked while looking back at her.
"Nope, she requested birthday pancakes" she answered. "We didn't have a great experience last year" she added, to what he nodded.
"Why don't you wake her up while I start making the pancakes?" Mon-El asked her, but she shook her head.
"You don't really have to" she looked at him, still getting used to the fact that he was there, at her apartment.
"No, I insist" he smiled.
She ended up nodding slightly, knowing that he really wanted to get involved in the little one's birthday, so maybe it wasn't a bad idea to let him help.
Halley had ended up sleeping with her. The child had woken up around two in the morning crying, not wanting to be alone, so she had ended up bringing her to her bedroom.
At that moment her cousin slept peacefully with her face buried in Saffire, Comet resting by her feet, and, for a few seconds, she thought about waiting a little longer to wake her up, but they only had a little more than an hour to get to the park where they were going to everyone else.
"Hey, baby" she whispered, gently brushing the kid's hair away from her little face, her cousin opening her eyes to close them again. "You're tired, huh?" she asked her, not receiving an answer. "Okay, maybe we should celebrate your birthday other day" she commented, getting the nine year old to open her blue eyes to stare at her while shaking her head. "Happy birthday, baby!" she exclaimed while taking the child in her arms, embracing her cousin as tight as possible. "I can't believe you're nine" she sighed with sadness, her baby cousin was growing up so fast.
"We're celebrating it, right?" Halley asked, still a little sleepy.
"Yes, we are, sweetie" she answered, kissing the kid's hair. "But first you have a surprise in the kitchen" she told her, already being impatient to see how her cousin was going to react.
"The pancakes!" the child exclaimed as she left her on the floor to grabbed her hand, which made her laugh while shaking her head.
"No, not the pancakes" she said while observing how Comet was about to jump from the bed. "Comet, sit" she told him, not wanting him to run to the kitchen. "Good boy" she petted him.
"He can't get there first, he will eat the pancakes" her cousin pointed out.
"It's not the pancakes, baby" she told her again, but only getting Halley to frown while pulling from her hand to start walking.
However, before the child could see who was waiting there, she cover her cousin's eyes with her hands, guiding her to the kitchen.
"You're not cheating, are you?" she asked her, seeing how Mon-El kneeled down in front of the kid, so she walked her cousin a little closer.
"Did you buy the pancakes? It smells nice" the child asked, to what neither of them couldn't avoid laughing, even Mon-El, who needed to put his hands over his mouth.
"Hey, pancakes is one of my specialties" she complained still laughing, her cousin trying to rid of her grip.
"I wanna see" Halley pouted.
"Okay, one, two..., three!" she exclaimed removing her hands, the little girl blinking slowly to get used to new amount of light.
The nine year old stayed still while looking at the person that was in front of her, unmoving, as if she wasn't completely sure of what was going on.
Honestly, she wasn't expecting that kind of reaction from the little one, she had thought that her baby cousin was going to run into Mon-El's arms, but, instead, Halley was just taking her time to observe him.
"Who is it?" she asked her cousin, kneeling down besides her, just wanting to bring her some confidence.
When the little girl didn't answer, she looked at Mon-El, who was as confused as she was, but giving the child her time, since they both knew that it was best to let her react with how the child felt more comfortable.
Slowly Halley's face changed, her blue eyes filled with tears as a small smile was drawn on her little face. Her cousin didn't waste any more time before jumping into her best friend's arms, observing how the kid was gripping tightly to Mon-El's t-shirt.
It wasn't a lie if she said that the three of them were crying, being so happy for her baby cousin's dream to be happening right in front of her, knowing that the child was going to be clinging around the daxamite for the rest of the day.
"I've missed you" she heard the kid whisper.
"I've missed you, too, kiddo" Mon-El kissed the little girl's forehead. "You know, I loved the drawing you made" he told the kid, who smiled widely.
"Really?" Halley asked him, to what he nodded slightly.
"I always keep it with me, Hal" he gently brushed the child's hair away from her face.
"Kara! He's back!" her cousin jumped with excitement while pointing to her best friend, Comet trying to get their attention by barking around them.
"I know, baby" she smiled as the nine year old embraced Mon-El again.
"Hi, buddy" the daxamite petted the puppy. "Look at both of you, you grew up a lot while I was gone, huh?" he commented while tickling the little girl, who couldn't avoid laughing."What do you think about having breakfast, birthday girl?" he asked the kid, who nodded happily.
Halley couldn't stop staring at Mon-El while eating breakfast, doing everything she could to make sure that he was there with them, that it wasn't a dream, smiling a little when she saw how her cousin hugged his arm for a few seconds.
"Let's get you ready for the party" she told the kid.
"But... Mon-El..." the child frowned, refusing to let go of him.
"He's not going anywhere, baby" she said while looking for Mon-El's help, since she knew that her cousin wasn't going to be convinced about it.
"I'm not leaving, I'm going to be waiting here with Comet, okay?" he assure the nine year old, who finally let go of him to grab her hand.
Halley got ready as fast as possible, agreeing with her on the first jean overall and red and white stripe t-shirt she chose, even in the shoes, which definitely surprised her since her baby cousin was starting to have a lot more personality when it came to clothes.
"Let's do your hair, sweetie" she helped the kid to sit on the stool at the bathroom.
She gently brushed the kid's hair before removing the bandage from the side of her head, staring at the wound for a few seconds as she hoped for it to heal nicely, since she wasn't sure of how much long they would be able to keep doing it.
Halley had gotten used to having the wound clean, even though it depended on how the kid was feeling, but at that moment her cousin was sitting still, not even flinching.
"How long do I have to wear the bandage?" the child asked as she put the bandage back.
"Um... I don't know, baby" she answered, her cousin sighing.
"Can I wear a headband?" the little girl asked, showing her the red headband that was in her hands.
"Sure, sweetheart" she took to help her put it on her head, being careful that the wound would remain covered. "Come on, let's go back with Mon-El" she helped her to get down from the stool before the child ran to the kitchen. "Baby, remember you have to put your shoes on before William comes" she told her cousin, who nodded slightly.
"Who's William?" Mon-El asked a little confused.
"He's Kara's boyfriend" her baby cousin answered while putting her white sneakers on.
"Hal!" she exclaimed, not knowing where the child had heard that. "He's not my boyfriend" she denied quickly, not even wanting to look at Mon-El. "He's a co-worker and we've been seeing each other, but he and I... um..." she shook her head while seeing him smiled a little at her.
"It's okay, it's not like you have to give me any explanation" the daxamite told her, but she remained looking at him, it was so weird. "I'm happy for you, Kara" he assured her.
It had been an awkward moment, so she couldn't be happier when Mon-El and her cousin started playing. He was right, she shouldn't have given him any explanation, but she couldn't stop herself from telling him the whole thing.
Halley giggled when her best friend tickled her, the nine year old laying on the floor without being able to stop laughing, just barely asking him to stop as Comet got himself in between them to play as well.
"Hi" she smiled while opening the door, William waiting at the other side.
"Hi" he smiled back. "Where's the birthday girl?" he asked as she let him walk into the apartment.
"Well, her best friend is back so..." she answered while pointing to where her cousin was tackling Mon-El down to the floor. "Hal, baby" she called her, getting the child to look at her.
"Hi!" the kid smiled, approaching them.
"Happy birthday, kiddo" William said while embracing her cousin. "Are you ready for your party?" he asked the child, who nodded while pulling away from him to walked back to where Mon-El was.
"Um... William, he is Mike, a really good friend, and Mike, he's William, my co-worker" she introduced them.
"Nice to meet you" Mon-El smiled while shaking his hand.
"You too, it's great to finally meet you, I heard a lot about you from Halley" William explained, to what her baby cousin grinned while clinging to her best friend's hand.
She frowned, not being sure of when Halley had told William about Mon-El, even though, knowing her cousin, she was aware that the kid had probably commented something about who had taught her all she knew about dragons.
Once everything was ready, they left to the park, the nine year old being the daxamite's little shadow since the child wouldn't leave him alone at any time, only doing it to greet everyone who was there before kind of forcing Mon-El to play with her, Val, Jon, Jordan and Comet.
"She's not leaving him out of her sight, huh?" her sister asked, to what she nodded. "I tried to warn him yesterday" Alex commented, getting her to laugh, she had done it as well.
"You should have seen her, she wasn't even barely able to react" she told her, both of them laughing. "She started crying and she hasn't left his side since then" she added, pointing to where her baby cousin was. "I can't believe she's nine" she sighed, being sad and worried that her baby cousin was growing so fast.
"She will always be your baby girl" her sister told her with a smile, getting her to nod while smiling.
That little girl was always going to be her baby girl, her little everything, since it didn't matter how much time would pass that she would always protect her.
"Hey, Can you explain me why my daughter's best friend is a daxamite?" her aunt asked her after approaching her, half serious, half joking about it. "And not any daxamite, but the former prince" Astra added.
"They got along since the beginning, even when I hated him" she answered as her aunt stared at her.
"You hating him? That's not what I've heard" Astra commented as she frowned, feeling how her cheeks were turning slightly red. "So your mom was right..., you dated him" her aunt pointed out as she wanted to disappear from there.
"He changed a lot" she told her. "And he cares a lot about Halley" she looked back at her.
"I can see that" Astra said as they both observed how the child was tackling her best friend once more to the ground. "I never mentioned Daxam to her, I didn't want to explain her about the war" her aunt explained.
"I think that's why she didn't have any judgment on them" she shrugged, remembering those times her cousin had asked her if she hated Mon-El because of how she treated him at first.
"Hey" Mon-El smiled while approaching them.
"She has finally let you go, huh?" she asked him with a chuckle.
"I need a break, she's full of energy" he commented, both of them laughing.
"Um, Mon-El, she's Astra, Halley's mom" she introduced them.
"Nice to meet you" Mon-El greeted her aunt.
"You too" Astra answered while observing him.
"Kara" her cousin called her, the child running toward them. "Can Mon-El stay for the sleepover?" the nine year old asked as she looked at him, not knowing what to answer, but being aware that the child wasn't going to accept a no for an answer.
"Um... You will have to ask him" she told her, a huge smile on her little face.
"Are you sure it's okay?" Mon-El asked her, to what she nodded, after all it was her cousin's birthday. "Then, sure, kiddo" he ruffled the kid's hair.
"Thank you" Halley hugged her, so she embraced her back.
She observed how her cousin was arguing with Jon. The nine year old was frowning slightly while staring at him, still answering back to whatever he was saying to her, but not being prepared for what the child was going to do next.
"Halley!" she exclaimed after seeing how her cousin punched Jon in his stomach, approaching them as she tried to remain calm. "Hey, what you did wasn't nice" she told her once she had taken her away from the rest.
"But he was being mean" the child complained.
"Then you should have talked to him, asked him to stop" she looked directly into the kid's blue eyes. "It's not okay to hit people" she crouched in front of her as the little girl refused to look at her.
"He didn't stop" the kid said, staring at her shoes as she sighed. "Plus you punch people when you're Supergirl" her cousin pointed out while frowning angrily.
"It's not the same, Halley" she told her, but the child shook her head.
"It is" the nine year answered back.
"No, it's not" she wanted to remain calm, but it was being hard since she didn't like to scold the little girl, not even if it was necessary. "Okay, you told him to stop and he didn't listen, right?" she asked, seeing how her baby cousin nodded. "Then you should have come to me, Lois or Clark, but not punching him" she tried to explain, but not being sure if the kid was listening to her.
"Why is it okay if you do it, but not if it's me doing it?" her cousin asked, looking directly into her eyes.
"Halley, it's not okay, it doesn't matter if it's you or me" she answered her. "I don't like hurting people, but sometimes talking it's not enough and in order to protect everyone else, I have to do it" she gently brushed the child's brown hair away from her face. "Talking is the answer, not fighting, sweetie" she managed for her cousin to remain in silence while thinking about what she had said, before finally nodding slightly. "Good, and now you're going to apologise to Jon" she told her.
"No" the child shook her head. "It's not fair, he started it" Halley refused to do it.
"Okay, then there's no sleepover, you choose" she really didn't want to cancel it, the little girl had been talking about it for days, but she felt like she didn't have any other option.
"But... You can't do that" the nine year old murmured.
"I can" she assured her, getting the kid to grabbed her hand so she would go with her.
Both of them approached the place where Lois was talking to Jon, her cousin really tightening the grip of her hand as they walked closer.
"What do you have to say to Jon?" she asked since the little one stayed still in complete silence.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have hit you" the child whispered barely looking at Jon, who looked as upset as her baby cousin.
"Jon..." it was Lois who talked, gently pushing her son.
"I'm sorry, too" he said in a murmur.
"Give her a hug" Lois told him, who shook his head so it was her baby cousin the one that embraced Jon.
Once everything was solved, both kids went back to play as she observed them to make sure that they wouldn't start fighting again.
"Are they ever going to get along?" Lois asked, to what she shrugged, not sure if that would be ever possible.
"Halley is not dealing well with the fact that she's younger now" she explained.
"And Jon doesn't stop teasing her about it" the reporter added, getting her to nod. "At least Jordan seems to care about her" the woman pointed to them, the young boy was playing with her baby cousin.
"I don't think Jon doesn't care about her, it's just their personalities are quite similar" she pointed out. "When are you going to tell them... um..., you know?" she tried to asked, being careful with her words.
"We're waiting until we can trust them enough to know that they won't do anything stupid" Lois answered. "I don't fear Jordan, but Jon... I really think he's going to try to be out there as soon as his abilities kicks off" the woman explained.
"They still don't have any ability?" she questioned her, smiling a little to Clark, who joined them in the conversation.
"A little superstrenght, but nothing to worry" her cousin said. "Hey, you and Halley should come to the farm for a few days" he told her.
"Yeah, sure, as soon as I can pull her away from Mon-El" she commented while laughing, but she knew that the little girl wasn't going to leave National City while her best friend was staying in town.
"How are you doing with him being back?" Lois asked her as she sighed.
"I'm happy that he came for her birthday" she answered, even if she wasn't completely sure of what she had been feeling ever since the moment she had seen him at her apartment's door. "How is that you are going back to the farm?" she asked her cousin.
"Mom needs help and since I'm not a reporter anymore..." Clark shrugged. "We think it's a great opportunity for the twins" he added.
"They're not happy about it, though" Lois commented, to what her cousin laughed while nodding.
"We'll be there" she assured them with a smile, a little break from the city didn't sound that bad.
"Popcorn is ready!" she exclaimed while approaching both kids, who were trying to choose a movie to watch.
"Yay!" Halley exclaimed. "You have to try it" her cousin turned to look at Val, who was staring kind of curious to the bowl of popcorn. "Here, try it" the little girl told her friend, who after a few seconds pleased Halley's request.
"Do you like it?" it was Mon-El who asked the little boy.
"It's really good" Val answered with a huge smile.
"See..., told you" her cousin giggled as she smiled observing how they interacted.
"We're going to watch 'The Lion King'" the nine year old said.
"Okay, but first we have to take a look at the wound" she told her, knowing that the child wasn't going to want to do it.
"Can we skip it today?" her cousin asked.
"I'm so sorry, baby" she whispered while brushing Halley's hair away from her face.
The kid stared at her for a few more seconds before finally nodding, so she sat down beside her to remove the bandage, observing how her cousin started breathing with agitation.
The little girl seemed to calm down a few minutes after being embraced by her, ending up being held by Mon-El while gripping tightly to Val's hand.
"All done, baby" she kissed the kid's forehead.
After two movies, both kids were asleep on the couch, her cousin hugging tightly the little blue dragon as Comet found his place next to the little girl.
"I should get going, I'm staying at J'onn's" Mon-El said while walking towards the door.
"Um... Mon-El... When are you leaving?" she asked him, wanting to prepared for when they would have to tell her baby cousin.
The daxamite turned to look at her as if he didn't know what to answer her, which made her shake her head, maybe it had been a bad idea asking him about it.
"I'm not leaving" he finally answered as she frowned since she had expected a different answer. "We defeated Braniac. Now it's up to Brainy if he wants to go back to the Future" he explained.
She stared at him a little confused, a lot of questions in her head as she tried to make a little bit of sense so she could keep talking to him.
"But what happens with the Future? The Legion and...?" she wasn't able to finish that question.
"Imra?" he completed, getting her to nod. "We got a divorce after leaving this time" Mon-El told her as she stayed still, not knowing how to react.
"I'm so sorry" she whispered, her voice sounding sad, even if deep down she was happy, but not being sure if it was because he wasn't leaving or because he wasn't married anymore.
"It's okay. I never got to tell you the whole story" Mon-El sighed. "We didn't choose to get married, it was the only way to avoid a war between Earth and Titan" he explained, surprising her, but understanding the reasons. "As you know she sent me back to sort out my feelings for you... And I wanted to stay, I really wanted to..." he looked directly into her eyes, having to look away after a few seconds, fighting her own desire of hugging him. "So I knew that as soon as the mission was over, I was going to come back" he admitted her. "This is my time. My home. I'm happy I'm finally here with Halley, with you..." they barely met each other's gaze. "I know you're seeing William and I respect that, I really meant what I said this morning" Mon-El assured her.
At that moment she all she could do was nodding, not being able to look at him as she felt her heart pounding heavily in her chest.
It had been two years since he had left, time during which she had thought that he would never come back, at least not to stay, so she wasn't sure of how she was feeling, not even knowing what to answer.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Kara" he smiled at her.
"Yeah, sure" she was barely able to whisper.
"You're leaving?" her cousin's sweet voice broke the uncomfortable silence that had been created as Mon-El walked to the door.
The nine year old walked closer to them, Saffire in between her arms as her bright blue eyes stared directly at her best friend.
"I'm not leaving, kiddo, I'm going to stay at J'onn's" Mon-El answered while kneeling down as the little girl approached him. "I'll see you tomorrow at morning, okay?" he told Halley, who nodded slightly before hugging herself at him.
"I love you" the child whispered with her head resting on his shoulder, observing how the daxamite increased the strength of the hug.
"I love you too, sweetie" he kissed the kid's forehead, pulling away. "See you tomorrow, girls" Mon-El said before leaving.
"Come on, let's go back to sleep, baby" she told her cousin, who nodded a little while grabbing her hand.
She gently tucked her in, being careful not to wake up Val or Comet, caressing the little girl's hair before kissing her forehead.
"Do you still like him?" Halley asked her half asleep, her eyes were barely opened.
"Mon-El?" she asked a little bit confused, seeing how the child nodded. "Um... I don't know" she sighed.
"I think he still likes you" her baby cousin told her as she had done when she was five years old.
"I don't know about that, Hal" she answered even if deep down she knew that it wasn't completely true.
Hi!
I loved writing this chapter since the moment Mon-El came back to Halley telling Kara that Mon-El likes her.
I already had a few scenes written because I knew I wanted Mon-El to be back or Halley and Jon's fight, which was mentioned in Teen Halley.
Thanks so much for reading, let me know what you think,
Ayrin
