So it's been forever since I wrote or updated this fic, but i've been going through some of my old stories that are unfinished and decided to either finish them or re-write them. I know Rookie Blue ended a while ago but i still love these characters. I've decided to re-write this story and re-post. I still haven't finished writing it so updates as usual will be glacial. I do hope to finish this fic this time around. Thanks to everyone that is still reading this and hope you like the re-write. :)
"1519, detectives are requesting backup at the Lucas Apartments."
Gail and Chris looked at each other and nodded. Chris grabbed the radio and said, "1519, en route ETA 5 minutes."
Gail turned the lights on and headed over to the apartments.
When they arrived at the scene they could see Detectives Nash and Peck standing outside trying to speak with a crowd of people.
Gail and Chris got out of their car and walked up to them. There were a lot of people talking and yelling, but nothing that could be clearly understood. The only person in the crow that was silent was a tall, large man, that Steve was apparently trying to speak with. The man just stared at Steve with a blank expression.
Steve and Traci gave the crowd one last look and walked away with Gail and Chris.
As soon as Steve and Traci left the man smirked and started talking with someone in the crowd.
Gail looked around and asked, "What's going on Steve? Why are they just standing around?"
Steve sighed and said, "We were called in because the Lucas apartments are a known residence for gangs and drugs. Traci was called in because at around 9:30AM there was a homicide reported. When we get here this is what we see. They are all members of the local Muerte Boys gang. They won't let us through. They said they want to handle it themselves."
Chris nodded in understanding, "So they do their own form of justice."
Steve nodded and said, "Yeah. They won't even let the coroner's van through to start preserving evidence. It's going to be a shit show when we try and get Holly through to see the body."
Gail's attention snapped from the crowd to Steve, "Holly? Seriously! Why does my girlfriend always get put on these dangerous cases?!"
Traci smiled and said, "Dr. Howsner is at a conference in Ottawa. Holly is the only other forensic pathologist in the area."
Gail groaned and asked, "Is it even safe for her to be here?"
Steve sighed and said, "I can put her in a vest and if I can get this crowd to move then I can go in with her."
Just then they saw Holly's Jeep pull up to the scene. Holly seemed to have taken a moment to take a deep breath before getting out of her car.
Gail and Traci both noticed. Traci turned to Gail and asked, "Is Holly ok?"
Gail shrugged and said, "I'm not sure. She was fine this morning."
Holly got out of the car and grabbed her forensics kit.
Gail smiled and waved Holly over, "Hey lunchbox, over here."
Holly walked over and smiled, "Hey. What do we have?"
Steve and Traci both shrugged, "We don't know. The 'crew' over there won't let us through. We are working on getting them to make way for you and the van, but they don't seem to be budging. While you are here we want to put you into a vest."
Holly shook her head and confidently said, "That won't be necessary"
Gail went to tell Holly to reconsider but Holly had already began walking towards the crowd.
Holly walked half way there before she yelled, "Hey Dumbo, why don't you move your ass."
The large man stopped talking and so did the crowd. Gail and Chris both rested their hands on their guns. Steve and Traci also undid their gun holster.
Traci looked at Gail and non verbally asked, 'what the actual fuck?!'
Gail just shrugged and turned her attention back to Holly and the crowd, not wanting to have Holly vulnerable.
The large man slowly turned towards Holly only to see Holly smirking. The large man gave Holly a once over put his hand to his waist. Gail went to make a move but Holly turned to her and shook her head.
The man then grabbed the bottom of his shirt and pulled up, revealing a tattoo on his side, a bird landing in a tree. Holly then lifted her own shirt and showed her right rib case, showing a matching bird and tree tattoo.
Holly smiled at the man and said, "No matter how far, or how long.."
The man then finished the sentence, "You will always have a home with me."
Holly lowered her shirt and started walking forward, but one of the gang members in the crowd stepped in her way. The large man stood and sternly said, "Hey, let her through."
As Holly was walking past one of the men whistled, "Damn Tank if you don't tap that, I sure as hell will. Body is fine!"
Some of the others in the crowd cheered and laughed.
Gail of course heard the comment, and growled ready to shoot the fucker for even thinking about her girlfriend. Before Gail even made a move Steve was placing his hand on her shoulder and squeezing, telling her to let it go.
Holly looked at man that made the comment and chuckled, "Thank you, but you wouldn't be able to handle me."
The crowd cheered again this time for Holly. Holly smirked and headed towards the one called Tank. Before Holly could reach who she needed to talk to a hand grabbed her wrist and pulled.
The tall man, Tank, stood in anger, "You don't fucking touch her!"
The man smirked and was about to kiss Holly on the cheek when Holly spun, quickly removing her wrist from his hold and put him into a head lock; he was now standing with his back to Holly's front and her arms were wrapped around his neck. Holly hit him in the back on the knees making him drop to the ground.
Holly then spoke, not loud enough for everyone to hear, but loud enough for those in close proximity to hear, "I'm telling you, you can't handle me. And if at some point you think you'll be able to, just know the next time you're in this position I'll have my dick and harness ready."
Holly then smirked and released the man who then quickly scrambled away.
Holly smiled again at the man and shook her head,"You really should teach them some manners."
The man laughed and said, "What can I say, they are all basically boys waiting for their balls to drop. There's very little teaching them anything at this point."
Holly rolled her eyes, and Tank walked towards Holly.
Tank pulled Holly into a hug and said, "It's good to see you Sis. Hasn't been the same without my favorite Poindexter."
Holly sighed happily into the large warm hug, "I've missed you Tanner."
Tanner smirked and pulled away slightly, "Hey, come on Hols, it's Tank."
Holly smiled and rolled her eyes.
Tank released Holly from the hug, "i'm assuming you didn't just show up to support your girlfriend?"
Holly looked up at him, "How did you…? You know what never mind I don't want to know. Just remember I like my privacy, and if I catch any of your little minions I'm ripping them a new asshole."
Tank laughed, "You know I check in time to time, especially now that you're back in Toronto."
Holly then turned her head to where the crowd was circled around, "You going to let me do my job?"
Tank sighed and looked up to where the cops were still tensely standing, "Don't let them fuck this case up. The kid was one of ours, a good one."
Holly nodded, "I'll do my best.. now let my damn van through."
Tank tilted his head and the crowd opened up enough for the medical examiners van to get through.
Holly squeeze Tank's arm, "I'll see you soon, come round for dinner. I know you know where I live."
Tank smirked, "You'll make the lasagna?"
Holly smiled, "Of course."
Holly then walked back down the path to where the body was. The crowd gave her confused looks but didn't dare say anything.
Holly joined her team around the body and began her examination. Her staff were nervous but tried to remain as cool and calm as Holly was.
When all the samples were collected and all the pictures were taken Holly's staff was about to close up the body when Holly told them to wait.
Holly looked around the crowd and saw a older woman being held up by two younger men. Holly approached the woman, "He's your grandson?"
The woman sobbed and nodded her head, "He was a good boy…a good boy."
Holly looked at the rosary the woman was holding, she could tell it was well loved and worn. Holly looked at the woman and looked down at the rosary, "Would you like me to give it to him?"
The woman nodded and sobbed as she handed the rosary over to Holly. Holly knew she couldn't contaminate the body so she called one of her techs over with a plastic bag. Holly had the woman say her prayer while she placed the rosary into the bag and sealed it. Holly wrote on the outside of the bag "Not evidence, return to Grandmother."
Holly then placed the rosary inside the body back with the young man.
The techs then came and removed the body from the scene.
Holly watched as the crowd parted again allowing the van to leave. The crowd murmured and started dispersing. Holly looked up at Tank and caught his eye before he winked and left.
Holly removed her gloves and sighed while she walked back to her Jeep.
Holly was immediately swarmed by the Division 15 members that were on the scene.
"How did you do that?"
"How did you know him?"
"Did you know the victim?"
"How are you friends with gang members?"
Holly rubbed her temples and waved her hands, "Enough!.. I—i can't have this conversation right now. I have to get back to the lab"
Holly then walked off the rest of the way to her car.
Everyone was staring at Gail like she had the answers, but honestly Gail had as many answers as they did.
Gail was concerned, she'd never seen or heard Holly act that way.
Gail walked over to Holly and leaned against the window until Holly laughed and opened the window.
Gail smiled sadly, "You ok lunchbox?"
Holly nodded, "Yeah, I will be."
Gail reached into the Jeep and stroked Holly's cheek.
Holly turned her cheek further into the touch and kissed Gail's wrist, "I'll be alright promise."
Gail nodded, "Well you know you're gonna be getting questions all day? This is going to be making it's rounds around the station before you even get back to the morgue."
Holly sighed, "I know. I… there's a lot of history there."
Gail looked at how scared and vulnerable Holly looked, she took a breath and nodded, "Ok. But you know eventually the others are going find a way to squeeze some details out of you."
Holly laughed, "Well to prevent squeezing how about you all come to my place tonight after your shift? I'll order food and have the booze stocked."
Gail nodded and leaned into the truck so she could place a kiss on Holly's cheek , "Sounds good." Gail then smiled at Holly and placed another kiss on her cheek then on her lips, " I love you."
Holly smiled and said, "I love you too. Now you have work and so do I. I'll see you back at mine tonight."
Gail nodded, placing one last kiss to Holly's lips, and walked back over to the cruiser where Chris was standing.
Since they didn't get the answers they were looking for Steve and Traci decided to start making their rounds looking for witnesses and statements.
Gail decided to tell them about coming to Holly's when they are all back at the station.
Gail and Chris got back into their patrol car are headed to a traffic call only a few minutes away.
The rest of Gail's day was filled with routine traffic stops and a noise complaints. When Gail and Chris got back to the station Steve and Traci were there staring at the white board.
Steve noticed when she walked in and called her over.
Gail sighed and walked over to Steve, "What? I want to go home."
Steve nodded and asked, "Has Holly ever mentioned anything about a club near Regent Park?"
Gail thought for a second, "No. Why?"
Steve ran a hand through his hair and turned back towards the board, "Nothing. I was hoping we would have had a way in."
Gail rolled her eyes and looked at Traci, "Please translate, I don't speak detective Peck."
Traci gave Gail a small smile and said, "After talking to the witnesses at the scene earlier we believe the murder was about more than just gang rivalry."
Traci turned around and grabbed a file off the desk next to her, "Holly was able to ID the John Doe. His name was Damien "DJ" Johnson, 22 years old, but no official connection to the Muerte Boy's. According to witnesses, DJ here was killed by the this guy here, Gavin Russell."
Gail was looking at the image of Gavin; he is tall and muscular, with a buzz cut. He had tattoos all over his arms and up his neck. He looked a like a wanna be rapper with his chains and his multiple gold/ diamond rings.
Traci pointed at the building named, 'The Palace', Traci licked her lips and said, "This is the club that Russell now owns."
Gail looked back at the board and asked, "Ok. But what does this have to do with Holly? We know there is some kind of relationship between her and Tank, the leader of the Muerte Boys, but what connection does she have to Russell? Why not talk to Tank?"
Traci looked at Steve and said, "Well for one we don't want to bring up Russel to Tank, not if we don't have to. We aren't trying to have more people end up dead. The other reason is that apparently Russell used to be a Muerte Boy. Based on what we've been able to scrounge together from old statements and reports Russell was in charge of all the guns coming and going. For whatever reason he faded to the background and then Tank took his position. We were hoping that Holly would have some insight into Russell. See if he looks good for this."
Gail shook her head, "No. No. No. You want to bring Holly in so you don't have to keep knocking on people's doors asking if they will come to the station and give a statement. You want to ask her about Russell to see if SHE thinks he's good for this. You want Holly to do your job and confirm a suspect."
Steve looked at Gail and sighed, "Gail if she knows something she needs to tell us. Imagine if we could take them down, do you know what it would mean for the city?"
Gail continued to shake her head, "I get that Steve I do. But have you even thought about what you would be putting Holly into? Honestly, what's the plan? You talk to Holly ask her about Russell and see what she says? It's leading at best. And what if Holly names this guy, are you going to protect her? Cause you know the moment it gets out that someone working with the police gave up Russell it's going to mean trouble for Holly. And Holly in danger is something I won't stand idly by for. "
Traci then called a time out and stopped the argument between the Peck siblings. Traci looked between both Pecks, "Look if Holly doesn't know anything then we drop it, ok? But we won't know until we ask. And if it makes you feel better if Holly know's Russell we will use her as a character reference not a witness."
Gail stared coldly at her brother before turning to Traci, "Well tonights the night for questions and answers. Holly's invited all of you to her place so you can ask questions. Not get your shit together and let's go. I want you our of my girlfriends house at a reasonable time, so we can sleep."
Traci smirked, "Right.. sleep."
Gail rolled her eyes and headed to the locker room to change, while Steve scrunched his face, "EWWW Traci!"
Traci laughed and followed Gail to the locker room to get her things.
When they entered the locker room Andy, Chris, Dov, and Chloe were all waiting by Gail's locker.
Gail groaned, "What do you losers want?"
Dov spoke, "Chis said we could go to Holly's tonight for dinner and so she can talk to us about being with the Muerte Boys."
Chris shoved Dov, "I told you to just say 'for dinner'."
Gail rolled her eyes, "Fine, whatever. Holly know's you're probably all going to be tagging along. She more than likely has enough food."
Gail wrote down Holly's address and told them to hurry up, seeing as she wanted them all gone from Holly's as soon as possible.
