Red, Blue, and Leaf went to the Pokemon Center to meet with Nurse Joy, to get their Pokemon all healed up and sit in there to rest. After that, they went to a restaurant and sat at a table with their Pokemon (Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur). The three friends are very disturbed about their once good friend, Yellow, and are shocked at what has become of her. Red remembered earlier that Professor Oak told them that it is common and normal for Pokemon Trainers to be rivals. But this was no excuse for them from Yellow.

Suddenly, a middle aged man with a cowboy hat walks up to them and sits next to them.

"I saw your battle", he said to them in a western accent. "That was the worst battle I've ever seen".

Leaf threw a firm look at the old man.

"Excuse me, sir, we're new to Pokemon training", she said angrily.

"Which is why I am going to teach you three kids", said the old man. "Why am I going to teach you if you might ask? Because I see you boneheads, obviously care about your Pokemon. Anyone who cares about their Pokemon, deserves to be in my tutelage. I do not tolerate trainers who do not care about their Pokemon, especially that one called Yellow, Yuck!."

"Now wait a minute sir, we never said…," Red began to protest.

"I will not take no for an answer and you three will meet me at the Pokemon Center at noon today", the old man continued.

The old man sat up and left them speechless. Then a woman police officer with blue hair walked up to them.

"Hello, I'm Officer Jenny. Don't mind me asking but did that man just tell you he's going to tutor you in Pokemon Battle?", asked the cop.

"Yes! Seems crazy in a sort of way", said Blue.

"Yes, but he's true to his own word", said the cop as she picked up their plates and gave them to a waiter. "I'd go for it if I were you. He's always interested in training newbies".

Red, Blue, and Leaf left the restaurant and headed to the Pokemon Center at noon. There, they met the old man, who is persistent in tutoring them.

"Name's Rainbow, kids", he said. "I will teach you the basics of Pokemon battle and how to catch Pokemon".

Red suddenly paused for a moment. He immediately recognized that name. Rainbow is a famous, renowned Pokemon Trainer. He also has the title of Pokemon Master and Champion. Red remembered how Professor Oak always talked about him. Professor Oak also admitted that he and Rainbow had been best friends since childhood and traveled together when they were young. According to Professor Oak, Rainbow's secret to victory is love, care, and trust in your Pokemon. But Red did not understand how that could win Pokemon battles. To this day, Rainbow is still the Pokemon Champion and very little has anyone ever defeated him.

"It's finally nice to meet you", Red told him. "Professor Oak speaks highly of you a lot".

Upon hearing this, Rainbow smiled.

"And Professor Oak is a very good friend of mine", Rainbow replied, overjoyed to hear his pupils have ties with his old friend.

So, Rainbow took Red, Blue, and Leaf to his house. Rainbow taught them about Pokemon types and how to battle in one day. He took them into the forest and taught them how to catch Pokemon properly.

"The key to catching a Pokemon is to weaken first, then throw the PokeBall. But don't expect catching a Pokemon is going to work every time because most Pokemon can resist being caught ", said Rainbow, as he demonstrated catching a Rattata and using a Pidgey to battle it. "Now each of you, look for a Pokemon to catch.

Blue saw a Rattata appear and recognized it as the one he missed and stepped forward to catch it.

"Go Squirtle!" Blue said as he threw his PokeBall out and Squirtle appeared.

Squirtle faced Rattata and Rattata stared at it.

"Squirtle, Tackle", Blue hollered.

Squirtle charged at Rattata which weakened it. Blue grabbed a Pokeball and threw it at Rattata and it stayed inside. Blue whooped and returned Squirtle..

"Well done, Blue," said Rainbow. "Leaf, it's your turn".

Leaf spotted a Pidgey and stepped forward

"Go Bulbasaur", said Leaf as she threw her Pokeball out and Bulbasaur appeared.

Bulbasaur faced Pidgey and Pidgey looked at Bulbasaur

"Bulbasaur, Tackle", Green hollered.

Bulbasaur charged at Pidgey, which weakened it. Leaf grabbed a Pokeball and threw it and then Pidgey went inside it. Green whooped and returned Bulbasaur.

"Good job, Leaf", said Rainbow. "Red, it's your turn".

Red saw another Pidgey and took a step forward to face it.

"Go Charmander", said Red as he threw his Pokeball and Charmander came out.

Charmander stood and faced Pidgey.

"Charmander, Scratch", Red hollered.

Charmander charged, ready to scratch at Pidgey. But Pidgey charged at Charmander and knocked it off its feet. Before long, Pidgey swooped in and tackled Charmander again and flew away. Red and Charmander looked at it as it flew away with disappointment. Red returned Charmander.

"Oh, don't worry about it, Red," Rainbow assured Red." There will be plenty of opportunities to catch Pokemon later. Let's learn how to battle. Red, you go against Leaf. Blue, you battle whoever wins".

Red and Leaf stood to face each other.

"Go Charmander", Red hollered as he threw a Pokeball in the air and Charmander came out.

"Go Bulbasaur", Green hollered as she threw a Pokeball in the air and Bulbasaur came out.

Both Charmander and Bulbasaur stood facing each other.

"The trick is to give commands to your Pokemon and tell it what moves to perform", said Rainbow. "Also you can switch out your Pokemon anytime you want and heal them if needed."

"Charmander, Scratch," Red hollered.

"Bulbasaur, Tackle", Green hollored.

Charmander and Bulbasaur charged at each other, with Charmander's arms raised and ready. Bulbasaur missed and tumbled to the ground, leaving Charmander to scratch Bulbasaur, which it did.

"Charmander, he's down, finish him", Red hollered.

"Bulbasaur, get out of there quickly", Green panicked.

But it was too late. Charmander scratched Bulbasaur two more times and Bulbasaur was finally down. Then Charmander stopped. Leaf returned Bulbasaur to it's Pokeball.

"How could you get so aggressive out there, Red?", Leaf shrieked.

"Aggressive?…", Red began.

"That's enough, that was a better battle than the other one with Yellow", Rainbow said angrily. "Blue, you can take over for Leaf."

Blue stepped forward to face Red.

"Go Squirtle," hollered Blue and he threw a Pokeball in the air and Squirtle came out.

"Charmander, Scratch", Red hollered.

"Squirtle, Tackle", hollered Blue.

Charmander and Squirtle charged at each other. Charmander attempted to scratch Squirtle but missed only to get tackled by Squirtle. Charmander got thrown off its feet and landed on the ground.

"Good job Squirtle, Tackle again", Blue hollered.

Before Red could give a command to Charmander, Charmander got hurled in the air into Red's arms. Red looked at Charmander and saw it could not take it anymore. Using a Pokeball, he returned Charmander to the Pokeball and at the same time, Blue returned Squirtle to the Pokeball.

"Bravo, Bravo, you three just learned how to battle with Pokemon", Rainbow said. "Remember, Pokemon types mean everything in battle, some types are greater, lesser, or have no effect at all".

"You mean, how fire pokemon beat grass pokemon?", asked Red.

"Correct!", said Rainbow. "Also, that explains how Blue lost to the Yellow girl easily because electric beats water"

Blue looks on sadly but is comforted by Rainbow.

"Has fire pokemon beat water before in battle?", asked Red.

"Yes, Red my boy", answered Rainbow. "It takes great skills and great training to make that happen. When you train and raise your Pokemon properly, it becomes stronger. The wrong kind of training can also make their Pokemon stronger too, but more likely to lose in big Pokemon battles. If a trainer treats their Pokemon as a tool, object, or weapon, it's at its full strongest, but also extremely aggressive and dangerous. The key to good training is three things… love, care, and trust".

"You mean to take care of it as if it were our own child, pet, or friend?", said Leaf.

"Correct, Leaf", said Rainbow.

"Rainbow, how does love, care, and trust help train Pokemon?," asked Red.

"That is something you have to learn yourself", said Rainbow. "Your best solution is to practice more on Pokemon battles either with wild Pokemon or with other trainers. Watch and focus on how your Pokemon is doing in battle. Think of it being a living thing with feelings and a soul".
