A/N: Okay, like it says in the summary, this just came to me while I was listening to the song on repeat for waaaay too long. I don't own Luke Duke or the song; He's Got You. The song is sung by Brooks & Dunn and was written by Ronnie Dunn and Terry McBride.
He's Got You
Luke stared out the window. It had been nearly a week, and he still couldn't stop thinking about her.
I thought we would always be together, the love we shared was gonna last forever.
Once I was your one and only, now here I sit, Mr. Lonely.
He'll hold you tonight, but I won't, what's he got that I don't? The one thing I thought I'd never lose: He's got you.
Luke closed his eyes as he remembered the feeling of rejection. Dixie June was the most beautiful woman he'd ever met. Black hair, blue eyes, and a smile that lit up his world. She'd come from Texas to visit her aunt and uncle in Hazzard, and upon meeting, Luke had been positive she was the one.
He loved everything about her. The way she laughed, what she laughed at, the way she walked, the way her eyes lit up when she saw something she liked, and most of all, the way she talked to him.
He'd never felt like he could open up to just anyone; it was hard enough with his own family. But she was different. It was like, no matter what he said, she wouldn't judge him, laugh at him, or think it incredibly dumb.
Beneath this dark cloud you left me under, can't sort it out so I'll sit and wonder.
I tell myself, it hurts, don't it? Now my empty heart will be forever haunted.
He'll hold you tonight, but I won't, what's he got that I don't? The one thing I thought I'd never lose: He's got you.
Dixie would love him no matter what he confessed to her…or so he thought. But then Clyde Johnson drove into town.
At first sight of him, her mind seemed to have wandered. Luke noticed this right away but managed to convince himself otherwise.
But then, without a word, she hadn't been and her aunt and uncle's place when Luke went to pick her up. From her relatives, he'd heard that she had a new flame.
He'll hold you tonight, but I won't, what's he got that I don't? The one thing I thought I'd never lose: He's got you.
Luke sighed as he opened his eyes again and continued his stare out the window. It looked like it was going to rain. But from now on, it probably always would look like that, to Luke, anyway.
He'd tried to work up the nerve to confront her about it, but every time he saw her in town, she was hanging off of Clyde's arm. She never gave Luke a second glance.
He didn't understand. What he'd felt…it seemed like she'd felt it too. But then how could she just forget about him like that? It must have all been in his head.
It just hurt so bad. He couldn't help but feel that it almost would have been better if she'd died…then he wouldn't have the rejected feeling he did now.
After all, Clyde Johnson was nothing more than a drunk, as far as Luke was concerned. What did he have that Luke didn't?
He'll hold you tonight, but I won't, what's he got that I don't? The one thing I thought I'd never lose: He's got you.
Luke felt as though his whole world had just come crashing down on his own head. She didn't love him anymore…she never had.
He's got you.
