Bonnie Sveen Fan: Thank you for your review. It does show that anything could happen. I'm aiming on exploring the organ donation further on in the story. Thank you again.

Chapter Nine

"You're sure?" Connie asked her.

Looking past Jan, Connie was horrified to find Iain smirking at her. His arms folded up with Lily not too far behind. It took Connie a moment to take in their appearances, something she hadn't done since the accident. Their faces were still covered in the scars that they've both sustained in the crash, with Iain's hair still slightly damp. Iain was wearing the red jumper with black jeans whilst Lily was in a brown and white checked dress, down to the knees, with black leggings underneath.

Just like the clothes the two were wearing when they were brought into the ED.

"Did Ruby tell you Iain knew?" Connie asked, focusing back to Jan, "Did Ruby say Iain knew?"

"She didn't need to," Jan answered, "But I'm the head manager of the ambulance station and I've taken my time to get to know each of my team members. Without speaking ill about him, I knew Iain was greedy when it came to food and he hated it when someone stole food from his hands or his plate and would sulk about it all day. No exceptions. During our first shift together, he irritated me by moaning about Lily nicking a bite out of his bacon and egg sandwich. I repeat myself, no exceptions."

Connie looked back at Iain. She knew him for over five years, but she never knew that he was strict when it came to food. What else didn't she know about him or any of the other paramedics or any of her team? She didn't even know that Lily's favourite flowers were daisies. Only Ethan knew that, and he was closer to her than Connie was about them.

"The morning the crash happened, Lily once again stole food from Iain under his nose, something Ethan noticed," Jan sighed, "Instead of being annoyed however, Iain was laughing and smiling. Ethan hadn't mentioned that Iain brought it up."

"But Ethan's been in shock," Connie shook her head, "He might not remember the details before the accident."

"He was able to recall memories of the morning," Jan sighed, "But I know Iain. He wouldn't let someone get away with pinching his food so easily. If he wasn't aware, Ethan would have recalled Iain complaining all day and giving Lily the silent treatment. Iain knew Lily was pregnant."

Connie closed her eyes after hearing about this new discovery. Lily and Iain must have only recently learned the news that they were having a baby. They had some good news that was going to change their future for the better, looking forward to the new addition to their family, about to break the news to their family and friends.

They were about to start the next chapter of their lives together.

Then it happened.

The crash.

All because of a text.

"You're still think covering our deaths is a good idea?" Iain tilted his head, "If you think it is, you're more despicable than I thought."

"I'm sorry," Jan wiped the tears from her eyes, "This isn't fair! Why them?"

Connie noticed Jan placing her head down, unable to comprehend the truth behind what had happened. How cruel could life be for everyone?

Jan didn't notice Connie looking past her, casting her sight on Iain and Lily, both looking down on the floor. Clearly disappointed in the circumstances around their passing and that they both knew Connie wasn't going to crack.

"Life isn't fair," Connie whispered.

"Charlie just called me," Gem placed her phone onto the coffee table, "Iain's liver had been successfully donated."

Gem wasn't sure if she the right thing telling Connie about Iain and Lily's wishes to be donors, but her mind wasn't clear at the time. She was still in shock at the time, she nearly didn't reveal it. But then Gem remembered, Iain would want someone to know about his wishes, Lily as well.

Gem was even told that she could also contact the recipients of the donated organs. Agreeing to be in contact within fifteen days, Gem was unsure if the recipients would want to contact her. Would they want to know about the man whose liver had been donated to him? Would they want to know about his past? What he did?

Gem wondered if Iain would have been proud of what she did. But at the end of the day, it was Iain's final wish to be a donor. Lily's wish as well.

"Had he mentioned anything about Lily?" Ruby asked her.

"Just that her kidney had been donated but that's it," Gem whispered, "Technically, we're not family. Not blood anyway. Iain and Lily weren't even engaged."

Ruby sighed, what could she say about the whole situation? Who had been contacted about Lily? And most importantly, would they have approved of Lily being a donor?

"Did you really think I wouldn't have known?" Iain growled at Connie.

Jan just left the room, allowing Connie to close the door, knowing she was going to be in for it now with Lily and Iain. As the two were talking, Connie could tell by the look of Iain and Lily that they were both upset, angry and distraught. Not that she would blame the two. Her trust in her daughter had killed them both and took away everything that the pair held dear.

Their plans? Their livelihood? Their baby?

"I said sorry," Connie groaned at them, "What more do you want?"

"I think it's safe to say what we wanted," Lily mentioned, rolling her eyes, "It's clear you never cared about any of us!"

"Of course, I care," Connie whispered, unsure if she was telling the truth.

"I don't think so," Lily folded her arms, "I left for the weekend, and you didn't notice, took any notice of the signs that I was pregnant. You didn't know my favourite flower was daisies. Did you know the Eevee plushie at the memorial was for me?"

Connie looked at Iain, "Was that how you've talked her into going to the Comic Convention?"

"That shouldn't matter," Iain shook his head, "The truth is, you should have taken the time to get to know everyone of your staff. Including the paramedics. If you've taken the time to get to know us, then you would have known how easily annoyed I'd get when someone nicks my food."

Connie froze at Iain's statement. Was that true? Did she not know any of her staff that well?

"You never cared about us," Lily looked her straight in the eye, "You've just proved that now."

Connie suddenly realised the truth. She saw Lily Chao one day take over the ED, but now she couldn't. Not anymore. She saw Lily as her protégé, but it soon dawned on Connie. How did she not know that Lily was a fan of Pokémon, or that her favourite flower were daisies, or that she was even pregnant?

If Connie knew little about the doctor, she saw taking over her job one day, how little did she know about the rest of her team?

Sam kept her focus on the punchbag, throwing each punch into the bag. Only, she wasn't seeing the punchbag at all. All she was seeing was the description of the bag of the girl's head that Ethan had described, driving away from the scene of the accident. She wanted that brat to pay for what she had done to her friends!

But then the person she saw quickly turned around.

And it wasn't the girl who killed Iain and Lily.

Sam let her knees fall to the ground, looking up at Lily's broken face. She can see the tears dropping down Lily's hazel eyes. Her face was as pale as snow and her body was as stiff as cardboard.

"Sam?" she turned to face Jan, holding a bunch of daisies, "Are you okay?"

"I don't know anymore," Sam groaned, "I'm just angry. Iain's name wasn't taken off the noticeboard this morning. He was meant to have been here, lifting Lily in his arms, shouting, 'Meet the future Mrs Dean.' Before reminding him, its 'Dr Dean.'"

"I know," Jan sighed, sitting down with her, "It's not fair. Life is so cruel."

Sam wrapped her arms around her knees. She always thought with Iain being a dedicated paramedic, he would have given his life on the line of duty. He would have been a hero, giving his life to save others. She felt awful, but she always pictured that was how Iain was going to go, even he said that himself.

Instead, his life was taken because of the irresponsible actions of a teenager!

Sam suddenly felt the anger build up inside of her again. She needed to release her anger in another way, punching the bag wasn't going to help.

"I need to do something," Sam groaned.

"Yeah," Jan sighed, "Why don't you spend the day with me today? If you need to scream, I'm here."

"You're sure?" Sam asked her.

"Well you won't let me send you home," Jan looked at her, "So this is a better option."

"Thank you," Sam smiled at her, "I miss them."

"I know," Jan nodded, "I miss them as well."

Connie walked into the Emergency Admissions Unit. Noticing Ethan staring out in the spare space. It was clear to her that Ethan was still in shock about the accident, with his arm still in the cast. What did Ethan do to end up with the broken arm during the crash? Did Iain and Lily do the same thing?

"At least Ethan survived," Connie heard Lily whispered.

"You choose now to bother me?" Connie turned to Lily and Iain, "Ethan is probably beside himself."

"And whose fault that?" Iain asked her.

"You know, you've could have stopped your car sooner," Connie whispered to Iain.

"You can't blame this on him," Lily defended him, "Iain had the right of way! Grace was on her phone, she admitted it! Anyone knows Grace should have stopped and checked for a clearly, but because she was distracted, she didn't. That was on her, not Iain!"

Connie would admit, she was shocked with her own attitude towards Iain and Lily! Did she seriously try to pin the blame on an innocent man who was no longer able to defend himself over the accident? Connie looked up at Ethan. He was the only witness to the scene of the crime. He was the only person who knew the full story about the crash. He was, he was.

He was the last person to have seen Lily and Iain alive.

Connie felt sick to the stomach. This wasn't a good idea, not at all! Turning around, she walked past the doors to the entrance of the Emergency Assessment Unit. Ethan hadn't noticed her at all. Feeling awful, but Connie couldn't face Ethan at all, not after remembering how broken he was when they broke news of Lily and Iain's deaths. Or when he was told he'd had to be off work for a while. Or when he was even brought in.

Ethan also got a glimpse of Grace, but only the back of her head.

"Where are you going?" Lily called out.

Connie didn't listen to Lily this time! She had to get out of the department as fast as she could! Seeing Ethan would answer all the questions Connie had of the crash, seeing her daughter in a different light.

Grace wasn't a bad person. She made a mistake! It was just unfortunate that her mistake was costly to others.

"Mrs Beauchamp!" Lily called, "Please, you need to see Ethan."

Connie closed her eyes.

Lily was wrong.

She didn't need to see Ethan at all!

Alicia walked over to the memorial, holding onto the daisies in her hands. The flowers were sadly starting to wilt away, it was only a matter of time before the flowers are taken down. Once the flowers were taken down, then the tragedy of what happened at Harrington Drive would no longer be a memory.

Then the heartbreak would be that people would forget Lily and Iain.

They would just be two people who used to work here. Their faces would be approached, and they would be told that they used to work here, but Alicia is scared that people would forget what happened or that they would believe that Iain and Lily had just left.

How would they be able to tell them that they passed away after an unfortunate car accident.

Alicia wasn't going to lie, when she heard Ethan came out okay, she was more focused on him. She felt ashamed, but she couldn't care less about Iain or Lily and all she wanted to do was to help support Ethan and help him move on from the accident. Wanting to tell him that she was glad that he's alright.

Then she heard the news about Lily and Iain.

Alicia realised that Ethan would be shook up. He just lost his best friend in that accident. The last one to have seen the two people alive, and it will continue to haunt him. What could she say about it? She can help support him with his broken arm, but deep down, she knew she wouldn't be able to support him with his broken heart.

"Hey," Alicia turned to see Louise, "Are those daisies?"

"Yeah," Alicia wiped the tear from her eyes, "Ethan asked me to get some for the memorial, they were Lily's favourite flower. Apparently, they reminded her of when she was a kid. She used to spend all summer outside picking daisies."

"I can't picture Lily doing that," Louise commented, looking at the memorial, "How's Gem?"

"She's still upset," Alicia sighed, setting the daisies next to the lilies, "I don't blame her."

"I just wish there was something I could have done," Louise looked to the sky, "Maybe if I had disagreed with Dylan or helped Elle out, Lily and Iain would still be here."

"Louise don't," Alicia scolded her, "Do not go blaming yourself. The moment you go blaming yourself for what has happened, there is no going back. This wasn't your fault."

Louise broke down into tears. She never got along with Lily; she didn't understand what Iain saw in her in the first place. But this? Louise would never wish this to happen to her or Iain.

"We're going to the pub tonight," Louise whispered.

"Count me out thanks," Alicia sighed, "Ethan's being discharged tomorrow. I need to drive him home."

Louise nodded, not taking her eyes off the memorial. It soon dawned on Alicia that everyone had forgotten about Ethan. All their thoughts are going to be with Lily, Iain and their families going through this difficult time. How many people would have paid attention to Ethan to see if he was okay?

Would Ethan really be okay?

Alicia was worried in case things wouldn't be the same.

It soon dawned on Connie Beauchamp why Lily and Iain were tormenting her. It wasn't just down to her feeling guilty that she was covering for the accident, or that she couldn't face Ethan knowing that Grace was the reason he was in hospital. It was due to realising that there wasn't much about Lily or Iain that Connie knew about.

How did she not know that Lily was into Pokémon, or that Iain was always strict with food?

Iain was right.

If Connie had took the time to get to know her team, she would have known all bits of information about Iain and Lily.

Instead of hearing it through others.

When Connie made that realisation, Lily and Iain seemed to have been satisfied enough. They must have been, they haven't bothered her at all since she walked out of the department tonight.

Grabbing her phone, she decided to call Grace on her phone, to tell her she'll be home late tonight.

"Hello. Your call cannot be taken, so please leave a message after the beep."

"Hi Grace," Connie sighed, "Listen, I'm going to be home late tonight. I've left money for you to order some food for tonight. If there's any leftovers, I have plastic containers you can use to reheat."

Connie slipped her phone in her bag as she stood outside the pub. She didn't normally come here, but she knew this would be a good time as any to get to know the whole team that she was working with.

It's too late for her to get to know Lily and Iain.

It's not too late for her to get to know everyone else, however.

Opening the door, she walked into the pub, walking over to the bar to place an order.

"Can I get a glass of red wine please?"

Connie looked around, noticing everyone doing their own things. Looking into the corner, she watched as Jacob, Max and Noel were playing poker. Watching the window seats, Connie watched as Elle and Duffy were chatting about something, but Connie couldn't work out what she was talking about.

"That'll be £3.75 please," the bartender asked.

"It's on me."

Connie turned to see Sam standing beside her. Another paramedic that she never really interacted with. Maybe Iain was right about Connie needing to interact with the paramedics a bit more.

"I don't mind paying for it myself," Connie insisted.

"No," Sam insisted, "It's on me. I was getting one anyway. What are you doing here anyway? You normally don't come here after work."

"I know," Connie sighed as she and Sam walked over to the table, "But after what happened, I guess I never really took the time to get to know everyone. I always thought of Lily taking over the ED, but now, I realised, I never really got the chance to get to know her better."

"I know," Sam nodded.

"It's too late to get to know Lily and Iain," Connie looked out the window, "But I thought I'd come in to get to know everyone."

"I think that's a good reflection," Sam smiled sadly, "But is getting drunk a good idea?"

"I'm only going to have the one," Connie groaned, "I need to drive home tonight. I left my car in the car park a few nights ago."

"So, did I," Sam looked at her drink, "I couldn't face it."

Connie looked at Sam with intent. This was the first time that the two of them had sat down without the discussion which would have involved a patient. It felt nice having someone to talk to, not regarding work as well.

"I'm off tomorrow anyway," Sam sighed, "I needed to go for a run. Clear my head. I haven't even done my morning run yesterday or this morning."

"You run?" Connie asked her.

"Yeah," Sam mentioned, "It's one of the most refreshing things I've done."

"I enjoy a good run as well," Connie smiled, "It had been a bit lonely doing on my own but Grace's too embarrassed to run with her mother."

"I don't mind joining you," Sam offered, "I've been losing motivation, but having someone with me would keep me in check."

Connie wanted to say no. As far as she was aware Iain was Sam's best friend. If Connie spent too much time with Sam, then the truth about Grace's involvement in the crash could come out. Sam wouldn't hesitate to contact the police about Grace knowing it was her actions that killed Iain.

But Connie also knew that she should say yes. After the discovery, Connie knew that she needed to get to know her team, including the paramedics. A run would be a good idea as well. She needed to clear her head as well.

"I finish early tomorrow," Connie smiled at her, "Would three be okay?"
