Chapter 68: A New Dawn
Ethel Rethor
Codexia was silent, her breathing slow and muted as she watched from afar. Her eyes roaming from each occupant and noting their expressions, their regard for each other was easy to discern, for each little group had similar emotions playing on their faces. Apprehension, veiled anger, and tranquil calm.
The Temple of Thesis, where the great Spirit of Water's seat of power lay, was occupied by more than just the Primal Spirit. Three groups now huddled within, waiting for the fourth and final troop to arrive so that negotiations may begin. Yet there was little speaking or small talk to be had between the groups, it seems that only three were conversing with one another.
Veles stood before Baine and Mairne, words low but none the less important with the way they seemed to be conversing. She understood that, the Tauren people venerated the Spirits and to meet such ancient and powerful ones such as these was an honor. But the nature of their discussions remained a mystery to her, only the slight reverberation of their words against the walls of the chamber could be heard.
Sadly, they were the only ones that seemed to show any collaboration, for all others were on edge. Two groups specifically were at odds, the Highborne and what remained of the Baine's personal cadre.
At the head of the group was Maluineth Moonscribe, while Mordent Evershade and Tylarwin Stormweaver stood just behind her. A small group of magi and advisors stood behind those three, tense and wary of those that stood at the opposite end of the chamber.
Glancing that way, finding the focus of their anxious glares, was a group of half a dozen Tauren. Some were warriors, strong and powerful even by their standard, and Codexia recognized some. Hamuul stood at the forefront of the group, staff in hand and fist clenched tightly around the oak shaft that appeared to creak between his meaty fingers.
Codexia suspected that Maluineth wished she had her staff on hand, the way she clenched her fingers from time to time showed her nerves where her face betrayed nothing. But neither group moved against one another, standing in the center of the chamber and partly holding back both parties from any mischief were the three remaining Primal Spirits.
Druantia, Erebus and Thetis stood close together and did not move or speak, remaining near motionless as they waited for the final members of this conference to arrive.
Whatever they had planned she hoped that it would be enough to at least stop any bloodshed, war seemed all about ready to be waged and neither side seemed ready to back down. Even if the Highborne were to surrender she doubted it would be to anyone besides the Sentinels, and only if they agreed to fight back the Horde on their behalf.
Conflict was inevitable, or at least tensions rising from the conclusion of this. But truthfully this was how she wanted it to end, how she had hoped to end it all. How she had planned it to end. This was going to be the fruit of her scheming all those weeks ago, what was occurring here now was exactly the situation she wanted them all to be in. Aside from the obvious hatred and tension mind you, but this was close enough.
Now she would be getting what she wanted, didn't make her feel victorious and righteous in the end though.
The doorway opened, snapping her from her thoughts, and entered were the last members of this little party. Shandris strode inside, close behind were several of her officers, but the ones who were most important were two very important individuals.
'Let's hope this works out for the best.'
Shandris had no idea what to expect when coming into this temple, why she had been summoned by the Primal Spirits? Along with what seems to be the nobles she intended to haul back to Teldrassil. That was no surprise, Quintas had told her as much that they would be present. However, she still felt that some nefarious scheme was in the works here.
Her fears felt confirmed when she saw who now stood only a few meters from her, it was Baine Bloodhoof and a small force of Braves. Mind whirling at the implications she could do nothing but freeze as she regarded them and they in turn observed her.
"What…? What is the meaning of this?" Shandris demanded, turning towards the son of the High Chieftain for an answer.
"I have gathered you all here." Druantia responded, words calm and soothing to the ears.
Yes, Shandris did not feel so.
"Why have you brought the Horde into the city?" Shandris asked once more.
"I have brought them here so that they may air their grievances, along with all others present, so that reparations can be made." Druantia stated, beckoning all forward kindly. "Please, be at peace, there shall be no rising of weapons or fists, only words carry strength here, nothing else."
Shandris narrowed her eyes, they were to air their complaints and then see about proper recompenses were given, this was a joke. The best possible outcome had been achieved and she, now it seems, was to have it snatched out from under her.
But she accented to this, for now, there was no other way around it. With Baine here and likely at the same request made by the spirits it would be unwise to incur their ire. Even weakened they were still a formidable force.
Now she would be forced to negotiate with all parties.
"Baine Bloodhoof, you wish to speak." Thetis stated, her words tranquil and to the point as she beckoned the young Tauren forward.
Baine did so, stepping forward and before the four great spirits. He bowed to them, respect and admiration seemed to exude from him as he made the gesture.
"Thank you, Spirits, for allowing us to have this chance." Baine said, turning around and looking to the rest of those in attendance. "I have come, on the behest of my clansman and the honor of my people. I seek to avenge the deaths of those who fell here, to halt the chaos that ensued from the unleashing of Theradras from Maraudon and the exodus of the Centaur from these lands. All this stems from those that lead the Highborne, their Nobles."
It was strange how he remained so calm, his words were level and did not carry the weight of anger that so many in his position would. Baine was of level mind and if he did hold hate in his heart did not express it. Shandris would call this one of his more admirable qualities, for even during the Battle of the Breach he remained calm and did not seem to be taken by emotion.
"Shandris Feathermoon, I wish for no conflict between us, we fought side by side at the Breach and held back the tide from Deepholme. That day we repaired a bond that has been tested and nearly torn apart by close minded animosity and old prejudices. I wish not to scar it with pointless bloodshed." Baine said, addressing the Sentinel-General directly.
"I feel I can believe you, but still an army marches towards this city, and I feel that you will fight should words fail here." Shandris replied, deciding to be direct with the Tauren.
Even if she knew little of him she had to respect him, as the son of an honorable chieftain and a worthy successor. He deserved to be told the truth, nothing scathing or veiled, plain and simple facts.
"Yes, that is true, for our people have suffered and many call for blood." Baine replied. "Even the wisest of us seek retribution."
"How is killing people you fought beside a few days ago in anyway wise?" Ichigo spoke up, she looked to him and found his scowl in place as he regarded Baine critically. "You got other things to deal with and you are here acting like a damn idiot looking for the closest thing to punch."
"A crude thing to say, for have we not the right to see that justice is brought down upon these Highborne for their slights?" Baine inquired, his expression and vocalization not changing as he argued back.
"The old saying goes like this: When seeking revenge, dig two graves. One for your enemy, and the other for yourself." Ichigo replied. "What you are doing now is only going to get more people killed, people that don't deserve to die. Why waste more lives here over something so damn petty and base."?
Shandris was gladdened that Ichigo's quick mind was focused on the task, but he had not the fire or determination to express himself. The barb he traded with Baine was not going to sway him so easily, what she would not give to have that quick wit and charisma that convinced many others.
"I do not intend to waste lives." Baine replied, frowning as he made the surprising rebuttal. "I seek justice, not vengeance. As I said before I wish to avoid senseless slaughter."
He turned back to Shandris.
"You seek to punish them, take these leaders and try them for their crimes. I seek the same and ask that they be turned over so they may be tried by our people." Baine said. "I ask this as a request and a sign of good faith, one I shall return by allowing your own people to have voice when they are tried for their crimes. Many were harmed by the Highborne and I would not wish to deprive you of this, for I certainly would not wish it so if I was in your position."
The request had taken Shandris by surprise, not expected such a move by Baine. But the thought that a trial held by the Tauren, one where her people would have a say and could speak up against the Highborne seemed too good to be true. Not only would it prevent possible conflict but likely also promote more cooperation between her people and the Tauren.
It was no secret that her people often relied on the Tauren in many negotiations in parts of the world, for they were the only ones they had positive relations with that now served the Horde. It was strained because of their allegiance with the orcs, but still there was a peace between them despite that. Yet that relation was beginning to turn sour, and peaceful relations were slackening. But this arc of cooperation could improve relations significantly.
This was probably the best thing she had ever heard, it was quite literally the most perfect of scenarios where both parties could be satisfied.
However.
"Your offer, I would be willing to accept it. Wholeheartedly in fact, without question, but I must know something else first." Shandris asked. "What of Ethel Rethor?"
Baine was silent for a moment, before letting out a sigh.
"You wish to know if we would take the city?" Baine inquired.
"It is a major asset, a city out on the ocean and connected to the mainland. Such a thing would be a major asset, to us and most certainly to the Horde." Shandris responded.
"There is no doubt what you say is true, for this city would be a major boon to the Horde. A naval base, a potential trading port and access into the Desolace and the surrounding regions, such a thing would be immensely valuable to any who would seek to take it." Baine replied, lost in thought for a moment. "I do not seek it; my people do not possess the means or need for occupying this city. I would have only sought its capture if I felt the Highborne were a lingering threat that needed to be expunged before they perform another reckless move that would doom us all."
Shandris believed him, surprisingly enough, perhaps it was his straightforward attitude or that she herself was starting to see things different. She blamed Ichigo for that, his outlook on things much be rubbing off on her.
"But it would be a boon to the Horde, as you say, your people have no use. But what of the orcs?" Shandris asked.
"They would seek it, such a prize it would be to them, I fear that the Horde's own desires will lead to a breaking of bonds." Baine replied. "But you surely understand their desire to take this city before you, for you have recently make an acquisition of your own to the south."
Shandris knew that, reports of a Warsong Warband on their way here were clear enough as to their intent. It was no surprise why though, she should have expected such an aggressive move on their part.
Ever since the capture of Eldre'thalas the Horde has been shoring up their own territories and attempting to expand into others. Whenever power shifts in one region the others are also affected, and here it is no different.
The Desolace has always been a barren and bleak region with no strategic or logistical advantages to offer to either faction. But with Ethel Rethor it opened up so many possibilities, for the city she now stood within held the key to access too many of the surrounding territories.
Ethel Rethor opened up access for the Sentinels to Stonetalon and Feralas, with the latter being highly contested until their capture of Eldre'thalas. With the taking of Ethel Rethor the Sentinels would most certainly control the entirety of the western shores of Kalimdor. The strategic importance of such holdings could not be fully realized until they were used.
But this would open up better trade between these regions, troop movements and even expand the influence of the Kaldorei nation in these territories. Were the contested nature of these regions would be called into question, as their influence was more clearly felt.
Yet, it likely was the same with the Horde. The strategic importance of possessing such a place could cause untold amounts of problems for her people. But in turn her people taking this city would result in just as many problems in turn. To take two large cities, one of which offered major navy strength and access to the mainland, would be seen as an attempt to expand.
"But should you take it or the Warsong, tensions will rise regardless. Your conquest of Dire Maul has already caused many in the Horde to question your motives, and if you were to take this city as well. Many would think you are taking these holdings to further the ambitions and domain for your people." Baine stated.
Shandris couldn't deny that. But someone spoke up and challenged that claim.
"Would your people not hold desire to claim this land? For this place was once sacred to Tauren people and held great importance to all tribes a thousand years ago. With the Centaur gone would not the tribes seek to migrate here?" Adelina asked, giving Shandris some time to ponder and weigh the words.
In spite of the Tauren's claim that was true, they said they held no interest in the city but the region was something of great importance to them. It had been called Mashan'she, the Loom of the Earth Mother, a place of deep shamanistic importance to the Tauren nomads. To reclaim it after over a millennium in the hands of the Centaur would be too good to pass up.
"We would, but not through blood and violence." Baine replied. "The Warsong may fight with your people over lumber in Ashenvale, but my tribesman have worked beside you on many occasions in Feralas. We have peace between us, worked side by side, I would have the same here."
A quick response, a wise one, Shandris would think Baine a politician and diplomat rather than anything else. For while many knew of the Tauren's neutrality and their often-peaceful ways Baine himself was a unique breed amongst his people.
"Yet blood seems to be all that will be shed when the Warsong arrive, how do you intend for them to be dealt with?" Shandris inquired.
"Their coming here is to stop a threat, they feel that Highborne must be expunged from this city and destroyed before another catastrophe befalls us. It is their belief, and of many others, that the Highborne will repeat their mistakes again." Baine replied.
"There is no need for them to suspect us so."
It had been the first time any of the Highborne have spoken up, and Shandris had ill feeling hearing Maluineth speak up again. Her previous attempts to negotiate her way out of punishment had all but solidified Shandris' opinion on her. She could only just imagine what kind of game she would try to play with Baine.
"The people are innocent in all this, as said by others they did not instigate the events that unfolded here, they cannot be blamed." Maluineth spoke up. "We did not think that our actions could cause such strife, that the theft of the Heart of Veles had caused such turmoil across the region. We were slow to fix our mistakes, and our lack of foresight had led to the chaos that unfolded and the proceedings we now take part in."
Surprisingly humble, it was almost out of character for her to speak so candidly and not try to defend her actions as being in the right or distances herself by blaming another.
"We are willing to surrender." Mordent said, stepping forward. "All of us have agreed to relinquish ourselves over to the Sentinels, a sign of good faith and so that we may shoulder the blame of our former comrades so that our people could be spared."
Now Shandris was surprised, he had actually been able to convince Maluineth and Tylarwin to surrender? Almost sounded like a poorly executed joke to her, but from the looks of it both his fellow leaders made no move to argue or even challenge the claim.
"A noble act on your part, but even I cannot say that your kin can find replacements that follow in your wake that hold such ideals and honor. Who is to say that your successors will be any less vile than those deposed by yourself? That they will not seek to avenge their noble leaders? Or seek to attack the lesser races that assail them?" Baine inquired. "It is no secret your people see us in a poor light, for we are primitive savage beings incapable of higher thought. What assurances do I have that while you give up willingly that those who replace you will not act on their own ambitions?"
It was true, more than she cared to admit but having those three surrenders may not force peace or make the Highborne docile. The loss of their leaders may give rise to new leaders, ones who will not be so willing to put aside their pride or need for self-preservation. Fear had guided many of the Highborne's actions since arriving in the Desolace, now was no different.
Before her army arrived the Highborne had been preparing the city for an attack, gathering their forces and what magical might they could to repel her army. Mordent had been the one to keep such things at bay, with him gone and the leaders he had some control over gone, who is to say the next in line to be in charge would unanimously agree to fight back?
But the Highborne did not give any response, a tense silence fell over them as they did not trust themselves to make a vow they could not keep. Perhaps they knew that making any defense would be met with skepticism.
"Your people have done great harm, to the Sentinels and Tauren here in this land and beyond, thousands of lives have been lost because of the greed and ambitions of a few. But your people as a whole follow the same teachings your leaders did, the same intolerant disregard for all other life and arrogance that saw no wrong in what they did." Baine replied, his words were harsh and blunt as they were hammered down on the heads of those he accused. "I may be willing to forgo vengeance but even I cannot turn my back on your people while the same danger remains of you making another mistake."
"They won't."
Again, Ichigo spoke up, taking the floor.
"They know now what their leaders are capable of, if they are so tired of having tyrants ruling them then they will make sure another doesn't come along." Ichigo continued. "If you saw the people you know for a fact that they don't have much love for any of these guys."
Baine was silent again.
"You often speak up and make bold claims, often at times I am told that you possess a unique insight and brand of wisdom that sets you apart from all others. Yes, I know of whom you are Ichigo, and you have earned the respect of many of my people, for your honor towards us." Baine spoke up. "But I also have heard of wisdom, flowing from you these last few days that is in defiance on your age. I have yet to see it I am afraid, and I feel that I can only take your words with only so much weight."
"Well how about the fact that the Highborne aren't addicted to arcane magic anymore?" Ichigo said, and that seemed to take Baine and some of the Highborne by surprise. "How does your argument stand up to that?"
"What do you mean?" Baine asked.
Shandris turned to Ichigo, he was taking a deep breath and pinching the bridge of his nose. He seemed to be concentrating, very hard from the looks of it, and when he looked up he gave her a nod. She smiled, it seems that he was for the moment back in the game.
"Took me a little while to get my head back on straight so sorry for wasting your time earlier." Ichigo said, walking past Shandris as he spoke to her.
"No need." Shandris replied, giving a nod in return.
"To answer your question:" Ichigo started, addressing Baine this time. "The Draught that the Highborne made from the spirits actually didn't feed their addiction. The stuff didn't give them more power, all it did was remove their dependence on the arcane and then cleared their minds. The stuff was a damn detox, meant to make them stop acting like they needed to find the Arcane otherwise they would die."
Shandris was aware of this, many others that had been part of Mordent's resistance group were also aware. Even Mairne and Hamuul, strange that this had not been shared with Baine, perhaps their own anger had prevented them from speaking clearly to their Chieftain's son. But Maluineth seemed surprised as well, perhaps she was now just realizing something.
"What you said before is true, that they have been acting out of fear. That fear came from their desire to satiate their hunger so they didn't die from the withdrawals, along with an addiction that made them crave power more. But if you haven't noticed it yet, the people that walk these streets are no longer dependent on the magical energies they used to hoard." Ichigo said, gesturing towards the Highborne on the other side of the room. "Everything they ever did was because of that addiction, without it what else do they want for? They don't have anything like that anymore, everything they are and have been for the last ten thousand years has been trying to go day by day without succumbing to withdrawals."
Ichigo's words seemed to have an effect, Baine seemed contemplative for a moment. Eyes narrowed and his head bowed, the gears in his mind churning to contemplate on this recent revelation.
"If that is so, what would you ask me to do? Even if they have no longer a need for the arcane it does not mean they will not partake in its essence." Baine replied. "Cultures do not change so easily, especially for those that are a culture built upon the use and mastery of the arcane."
That was a major flaw, for if the Highborne did not change their ways then they would return to their ways. Shandris knew that as long as the Highborne kept their arcane practices they would not be safe from suspicion, and suspicion was all that the Horde needed to be sure that destroying them was the right thing to do.
"Perhaps a solution then, to appease all parties. A change that I think you might find of interest."
Shandris turned to the speaker, and with no small amount of suspicion she regarded Codexia Fairchild. While Ichigo and Iyeana had said that she was no longer a threat, having aided them in their mission and supposedly learned from her mistakes, she had her doubts.
"I know of a way for things to be settled here, where instead of animosity we can bring together these two factions as one. As brothers in a united cause." Codexia replied.
Shandris narrowed her eyes, what could she possibly mean by that? What kind of scheme could she have concocted? Perhaps now that the situation is the way it is she has decided that it was time for her to retry her old scheme.
"I doubt that your plans have any merit here, you intend for the Highborne to turn to Primalism. But it was that same intent that made them rebel against you and seek out their own ways. What will make things here any different?" Baine inquired, his gaze mirrored Shandris' as he stared at the Primalist with clear mistrust.
"Because I am not forcing them, I am giving them a choice. They may do as they please, to follow the path they wish." Codexia replied. "I tried to lead them, like an animal on a leash, but they did not take kindly to being herded around like cattle. So instead I will allow them to choose their fate."
Shandris didn't know what to think about that, could she really justify all her actions up to this point and the only thing she changes is allowing the Highborne to make a choice. Technically they already have, although this was to be their second chance. This time around things were different, the people were not following the lead of their Nobles and instead had some contempt for them.
'But none of those here would change, they would never give up their ways so easily.' Shandris mused, looking at the small entourage of mages and warriors behind the three nobles.
Perhaps there was more to this than she knew.
"Didn't help you the first time." Caren spoke up. "What changes now? You have the nobles at the blades edge of those who are here to annihilate them and you still want to force change on them. It isn't going to work, what is going to happen now is they are just going to say yes to save their own lives and no one will be willing to trust them because they know they are lying. So, all you are doing now is just putting these people through hoops and making them play an act that will not change the outcome of what is going to happen here. All it will do is give more credence to why they were slaughtered and why you shouldn't be trusted, because right now you are proving to be unrepentant for what you have done."
The young mages words struck like a hammer, one with spikes and possibly heated in a furnace, with the way it stung. Even Shandris felt the break as she saw Codexia's composure slip just a little at the words sent her way. But she composed herself, rebuilding that confident façade and smiling in spite of the insult delivered her way.
"What I did was wrong, both in practice and on principle, I never should have tried to force them to do this or coerced them under the threat of death. Instead I should have shown them, a way better than their old lives." Codexia replied.
"But even so the Highborne have lived this life for so long, they still gravitated towards the Arcane even when they knew its dangers. They still hungered for it endlessly." Adelina said. "Change can only come to those who wish for it."
"And if history has taught me anything about the upper class, they don't like it when something changes in the status quo, unless it leads to more power. And less people to share it with." Caren added her own comment to the mix.
"Yes, all true." Codexia replied. "The Nobles, I failed to change them, with their Prince and former Lord gone they were free to expand on their power and finally have what they always wanted. Control over their lives and the people they stood above. My mistake was thinking I could shackle that ambition, and force them back under my heel to do as I command. I would have failed regardless if they rebelled or not, they never would have changed. Just like I know they won't change now."
"Then what is the point of all this?" Baine intoned.
Shandris wanted to know as well, how the hell did she intend to actually change the Highborne and give them a choice when they obviously don't want to change.
"That will be shown in a moment, but first I must ask one of you for something." Druantia said, stopping all other discussions.
The shift in the conversation was noted, like it had taken a sharp turn and was being directed elsewhere. It was strange really, what was the spirit planning? Did they even have a plan? Shandris suspected they were about to find out as the spirit approached her group. Hovering a few feet in front of them and looking down at herself and her force.
"Adelina, I am in need of your help." Druantia spoke.
Shandris turned to the young druid, raising a surprised brow as her starlight eyes landed on Adelina. The Druid was most shocked of all, obviously not expecting such a request from a powerful spiritual being such as her.
"What… What do you ask of me?" Adelina inquired, shaking off her surprise and trying to speak with some strength in her words.
"I require you to fulfil our agreement back in Eldre'thalas, I returned life to your fallen comrade and healed his wounds. I ask for you to return life to another and rouse it from its slumber." Druantia replied, gesturing towards the large intertwined tree at the end of the chamber.
"You wish for me to heal the tree?" Adelina asked.
"Yes, but you must also strengthen its core and rouse it from slumber." Druantia replied. "This tree is not a normal one, for it is from the branches of a World Tree. Shaladrassil, the Crown of Night, this tree was born from one of its branches. As was the Great Tree that resides within Feralas in the Dream Bough."
Shandris did not know what to think, that statement alone had sent a wave of shock through her being that she could not begin to fathom. Another World Tree? How was that possible? Where had it come from? For such a great and powerful tree to exist without their knowledge seems impossible.
Even she knew of the Great Trees and their locations across the globe, in Ashenvale stood another while in the Eastern Kingdoms stood two more. Along with two in Northrend, one of which had been empowered so greatly that it had become a World Tree itself before is inevitable destruction. But the knowledge of another unknown World Tree, one beyond their realm and not in the Emerald Dream, seemed impossible to consider.
"It… is from… a World Tree?" Adelina asked, shocked to hear such a thing.
"Yes, Shaladrassil was planted long ago, before even Nordrassil took root. It was planted near the dawn of this worlds remaking, one of many branches taken from G'Hanir in the Dream and planted in the waking world. For it was a pool that spread its life energies across the world, planted by the same beings that created the great construct beneath the Desolace." Druantia said, beckoning Adelina forward. "I ask you to awaken this tree, to empower it so that we may heal this land and usher in great change for all."
Adelina seemed to hesitate, standing there and unable to move as she looked around for anyone that could help. But truthfully who could help her, the task set before her was one she was almost certain to fail. How could she do alone what it took likely dozens of druids of sufficient years and experience to do when she was, for lack of words, not a powerful druid.
"Spirits, one cannot simply grow a Great Tree. Even if it has already been planted and begun to grow the power needed to make it bloom is impossible for a single druid to do. Please do not go through with this, she is not ready for such a thing." Quintas spoke up, quickly coming to his apprentice's aid.
But it seemed that Druantia would not have any of it.
"No, this is a task I set out before her, and one that I expect her to complete on her own." Druantia replied, directing her gaze back onto the nervous Adelina.
Who could do nothing but follow the great spirit of life.
Ichigo had no idea what was going on, lots of words had been thrown around and things had been said that meant absolutely nothing to him.
Great Trees? World Trees? Shaladrassil?
He had heard a few things from Adelina about her people, but usually she downplays it because it is normal from her perspective. But he knew some things. World Trees, as in the singular rather than the plural, had been something of great importance to her people.
He knew that Nordrassil was a massive tree that had been created over ten thousand years ago and have been blessed by the Dragon Aspects. The blessing has given the Night Elves immortality and free of disease as well as a connection to the Emerald Dream. He had heard her mention it was called the World Tree.
But truthfully, he had never really expanded his knowledge of the elven culture, where Caren and Adelina often regaled each other on their respective cultures he was busy. Although, busy and hassling Jaina, beating up the guards, and then testing his abilities. Honestly, he had been distancing himself from his friends as of late.
Something he should fix in the near future.
But for the moment he had to figure out what the hell is going on.
"These Great Trees, aren't they meant to connect one to the Emerald Dream?" Ichigo asked, looking to Quintas who followed after Adelina
"Partly, the trees were originally planted to halt a life draining corruption that seeped from the crust of the earth." Quintas replied, turning from Adelina to speak. "Each of the trees was only a branch from Nordrassil, each one cut from the bough of the mighty tree and grown over these deposits."
"How the hell does that help?" Ichigo asked, how was planting a tree meant to actually stop something that leeches off the life of anything in a location.
"Because of where it came from, the World Tree was born from an Acorn from G'Hanir, the Mother Tree." Quintas replied, Ichigo gave him a perplexed look that almost begged him to simplify his words and thankfully he did. "The Mother Tree was a mighty tree within the Emerald Dream, so powerful that it is said to have been the first tree to exist and spread life from the Dream and into the mortal world."
Ichigo got that pretty well, sounds like some kind of Druidic creation story, how the world came into be and life flourished. If the World Tree was born from an acorn, and Great Trees were born from branches from a World Tree.
"I guess the plan was to overpower the life stealing corruption and bring everything back to life." Ichigo said.
"In essence, yes. The Great Trees proved to be effective in healing the damage done and preventing any further loss of life. But the problem that arose was because Archdruid Fandral Staghelm did so without consulting the Cenarian Circle and the Aspects." Quintas replied. "For a time, there was no issues, and we left them be. Four of them became portals to the Emerald Dream for us."
Ichigo tried to figure out what the Spirit was actually trying to do, what could it gain from creating a Great Tree? Healing the region was a possibility, didn't seem like the only reason for it if this had anything to do with securing peace.
The point of all this was for the Highborne to not be wiped off the face of Azeroth, the spirits had inferred as much with this. Codexia had done the same and it was likely the spirits and her were working together on making that happen. So how was creating this tree meant to achieve that?
Returning life to the Desolace wouldn't change anything for the Highborne were not the ones to do it, and this would do little to make amends for all they have done. Yet the immediate concern seemed to be on something else, specifically the one individual that was being asked to make the tree grow.
"How hard is it to grow one of these trees?" Ichigo asked.
"The power of an individual is not what is needed, but where that power comes from. A druid communes with the life around them and channels it, but to make these trees grow they require the energies of the Dream to flourish." Quintas stated. "But the amount of energy needed is still great, and to channel all the power from the dream into the waking world is far from easy. For those energies can consume an individual if they are not careful."
Then the chances of Adelina doing this seemed unlikely, to do it alone? Why was she being asked and not anyone else? Quintas did try to dissuade her though, prevent her from doing it before Druantia insisted. So perhaps she was using that deal they made as a means to get one of them to do it.
"I… I am not strong enough… I do not have the power to do this." Adelina said, her voice sounding higher than normal as she looks very uncomfortable.
Ichigo knew why. This was beyond her actually not having the experience and training to actually accomplish this monumental task. It was her own personal disbelief she was a strong druid, Adelina has always downplayed her abilities and never shown herself as anything special. Every time she was put towards a task she would always express doubt that she would do it correctly. When she made a simple mistake, or forgets something she would get depressed about it, more than what was normally allowed.
He had always wondered about that, but he never pried. Any time he had tried to learn of her past she has been very hesitant to speak upon it, and when she has it was never pleasant for her to reminisce. But when he had needed advice she would give it and often draw on her own past to try and help him, maybe it was time for him to do the same.
"Adelina."
Ichigo walked up to her, strolling forward calmly and giving some thought to how he could actually say. Giving a pep talk was not one of his skills, but there were times when he had given friends and comrades some resolve in their battles. But this wasn't a battle, there was no fighting to the death or a fight to keep oneself or other alive, it was about giving a person some confidence.
"Ichigo, I agreed to help the spirit when she called on me, but… I cannot do this. I do not have the power to…"
"Adelina." Ichigo said, interrupting her before she could keep bringing herself down. "Why are you doing that?"
"Doing what?" She asked, looking confused.
"Putting yourself down? I have seen your powers in play before and I have to say you are no slouch." Ichigo started off, wanting to scoff at his own lame attempt at boosting moral. "Why are you hesitating to do this?"
"Ichigo, you don't understand. To create a Great Tree, it requires so much power, power that is drawn directly from the Dream and channel it through my being and guide it into the tree. I cannot do that, I have never done that." Adelina replied, sounding exasperated in having to explain it.
It was almost as if she was annoyed that she had to explain why she was so worthless, that it should be expected of other to already know. That actually pissed Ichigo off.
"Then why the hell do you doubt yourself?" Ichigo growled, scowling as he looked at Adelina. "You say you can't do it, but you haven't tried, instead of actually trying to empower the tree you back away and don't even think about making an attempt."
"Because I can't…"
"Don't! Never think that, never!" Ichigo said. "The moment you consider defeat, at any point, you will fail."
Ichigo had dealt with this kind of crap all the time, more often than not he was the one getting knocked over the head because of it. How many times has his resolve broken or shaken so much that he let it overwhelm him? Who could blame him really, he had only been a Shinigami for a couple months and going from one massive catastrophe to the next. Adelina had been going through this for most of her life, he knew that for a fact, whatever happened to her family had shaken her confidence and nearly consumed her.
That is what he understood, she needed to know that she had people to support her. Not only that, but she had to know how much she supported them as well, how strong she was.
"You are far from being worthless, I know you think you can't do this. But I challenge you to try, to take a step forward and actually make that damn tree grow." Ichigo said, pointing his finger at the tree that she was meant to make into a massive towering oak. "You won't get anywhere if you don't start walking forward, if you back down from doubt and uncertainty than you can never rise up and be the greatest you can be. It doesn't matter if you fail here, because you have people that will pick you up and guide you through it."
Ichigo turned and looked back towards his little group, Caren nodded her head towards them and gave a confident smile. But she was not the only one, her master stood there stoic as ever but he offered a slight incline to show his support. Iyeana, Anaesia, and even Shandris followed suite, giving whatever support they could to the nervous Druid
"Stand tall, move forward, and never let defeat stop you. Because that means you only need to get stronger, and that is something anyone can attain. But only if you keep moving forward, never let yourself be pushed back or put down. And that is especially true when it is yourself." Ichigo said, placing a hand on her shoulder and flashing a smirk. "So? What will it be?"
Adelina didn't speak, his words did have an effect though. The way she stood there, calm and contemplative, showed that he had reached her. With a single breath she let out what was her hesitation before standing firm, rising back to her full height. Half a foot taller than him, never before had she been so tall, never so confident.
'There it is.' She had the spark now, all he had to do was make sure it ignited.
He watched as she approached the tree, standing before it for only a moment and then she began. Ichigo felt it for a moment, the spiritual forces being summoned up and drawn to her from almost nowhere, as if the life energies of some distant spiritual realm were being drawn to her.
They were potent, strong and dense, but did not possess the oppressive feeling of power that he usually associated with spiritual forces. This was completely different, and she was channeling it all and into the tree.
The next few minutes they watched as she channeled the power, Ichigo standing just behind her and watching as she continued to pour her power into the tree. Then she changed her stance, shifting to the side and beginning to make slow movements with her hands and feet. Like a dance she controlled the flow of the power from the Emerald Dream and with it controlled the tree itself.
Soon the tree began to shift and change, the two entwined trucks began to unwind from one another and grow upwards. The wood began to gain a healthy brown color and fatten, roots shot up and dislodged the tiled floor beneath their feet.
"Incredible, she's actually doing it." Quintas said, shock present in his tone and most certainly on his face.
He was not the only one, everyone present watched in awe as Adelina began to nurture the tree and make it grow into a massive tree. The large oak had taken up the entirety of the space between the staircases and already touching the high roof. But it did not allow the stone ceiling to halt its rise, punching through the age-old stone and tearing through it, bringing stone blocks falling down to the ground.
Yet they did not reach those below, Veles halting their decent and holding them aloft in the air.
"She is quite powerful, to channel those powers and guide them the way she does." Hamuul spoke aloud.
Ichigo did not doubt that, she was doing better than even he had hoped her to do, if this was a task for more than one druid she was remarkably powerful. Within a few minutes the roof had been breached and the tree continued to rise up, going higher and higher still. The canopy of emerald leaves that sprouted up became the new roof, blocking out the midday sun and bathing the chamber once more in darkness.
With a final wave of her hands, she gathered all the remaining power within her palm, and pushed it out towards the tree. The golden and jade energies slammed into the trees surface and pulsed up its length, flowing over the tree and giving it another spurt of growth.
Adelina stumbled back, taking on deep breaths as she tried to keep her balance. Ichigo was quick to jump in and take her arm before she could fall, something that happened anyway as exhaustion took hold over her.
"I… did it… didn't I…?" Adelina asked, looking weary as she looked up at the tree.
"Yeah, you did great." Ichigo replied, smiling as he guided her down to the ground and let her rest.
"Incredible, how did you do this?" Quintas said, rushing forward to look over his apprentice. "To do what you did was impossible, how did you make the tree grow as it did?"
"I just… did as I… was taught… by An'da…" Adelina said, letting out a small yawn as she fought to stay awake. "So… tired."
"Sleep now then, you have earned your rest." Druantia said, hovering forward and looking down upon Adelina with a serene expression. "Your part in this has been done, and now only one more remains to be given before it is ready."
Ichigo looks up towards the spirit and found her gaze on him, he raised an eyebrow. What could he offer that could amount to anything? He didn't really have any power to give to these Spirits or doing anything magical.
"Please, we require something of you to finish empowering the Great Tree, we require you to give a 'blessing' upon it." Druantia said, gesturing towards the tree Adelina had just recently grown into a massive oak.
"What can I do?" Ichigo asked, wondering what kind of angle the Spirit was going with this. "Not like I can do anything important. Not a mage or a Druid or anything really, unless you want me to trim a few branches, you might as well ask an ogre a math question."
"While it is true that you are none of these things, it is what you are that can help us, you possess a unique power that can fulfil what we need of you. For that weapon that rests on your back, is a manifestation of your power, holds a great many functions." Druantia replied.
Ichigo glanced over his shoulder to Zangetsu, his Zanpakutō. He narrowed his gaze and thought for a moment on what the Soul Cutter was meant to do, there were several functions really for its existence and purpose. There were many things it could do: cleansing of Hollows, performing Konsō, Opening Senkaimon, channeling his spiritual power into a Getsuga Tenshō and maybe being a conduit for his power.
"What exactly did you want to use it for?" Ichigo asked.
"Did you notice when you sent the souls of the fallen Highborne on their way where they went?" Druantia asked patiently.
Ichigo remembered that, he had a conversation about it back in Dire Maul with Adelina and Caren. Adelina had said that the spirits seemed to be drawn to the Emerald Dream, and she did say it was strange for that to be happening. He too thought it was weird, usually the Zanpakutō was meant to send the souls to the Soul Society.
But there was no Soul Society here, because that place was on Earth and it seems that distance affects the means for Konsō to send souls there. He originally guessed it had something to do with Konsō just releasing the bonds of a soul to the material world and just sending them wherever they needed to go. But he had a feeling that there was more to this than he knew.
"I assume that you had something to do with that." Ichigo asked, crossing his arms as he made the claim.
"True, but not fully, I connected you to nature and in turn your own powers connected you to the Dream of Creation. Nature and the Dream are connected, and what you are is meant to be connected to a spiritual cycle. What happened was that you reconnected yourself from whatever cycle you once held from your domain and to the one here." Druantia responded, and that confused Ichigo a little.
His own powers connected him to the Emerald Dream? Could it be that as a Shinigami he was connected to the reincarnation cycle on Earth, and because he wasn't there anymore his powers needed to actually reconnect with some other spiritual cycle here? Was that possible? Didn't matter, this didn't answer his question.
"What does this have to do with the tree?" Ichigo asked.
"We require you to connect this Great Tree to the Emerald Dream, to use your blade to cut open a way into the realm so that its energies can flow into here and through the other Great Trees scattered across the Desolace." Druantia replied. "Four more trees have already been planted, nurtured by Codexia before our imprisonment, and with this tree risen all five will be connected to the Dream and with that combined power will revitalize the region. Please, give this 'blessing' and allow this land to be restored to what it once was."
Ichigo guessed that they wanted him to turn this Tree into a Senkaimon then, kind of like the Great Tree in the Dream Bough. And just like that tree, and the others like it, it would return life to the otherwise lifeless region with the nurturing properties of the Dream.
"Alright, let's go for it." Ichigo replied, drawing Zangetsu and stabbing towards the tree. "What do you need me to do?"
"Impale the blade into the base of the tree, from there place your hand upon the pummel of the sword and focus. I shall do the rest." Druantia responded.
With a shrug he stepped forward and raised his Zanpakutō, with a single thrust he impaled it halfway into the wood. Then he began to focus his energies as he placed his against the pummel of his blade, which began to glow brightly.
He continued to pour his energy into the lengths of his Zanpakutō, watching as the tree began to pulse along with it. Like a heart pumping blood this tree thrummed the same, each second passed and another bust of energy from his blade shot through the tree. He could feel it drawing in his power, taking the power but not knowing what to do with it.
"Now we begin."
Druantia had positioned herself behind Ichigo, placing one hand against his back and another upon the tree. He did not see what she was doing or what kind of spell she was using, but he noticed a change in the energy.
Focused instead of a direct pulse, tendrils of energy flowed up and around the tree like veins guiding the vital energies to where they were needed. Then he noticed it, a subtle shift, it was not the tree that was changing but all around him instead. It was phasing in and out around him but he did notice the details, the world had a deep green hue that made it hard to see far. But he noticed the churning oceans surrounding him on a small island in the middle of a jade sea.
But behind him he noticed the great landmass, covered in tall trees and green with all kinds of flora. He could hear birds and other wildlife just over the lapping of water, where the hell was he?
"It is done."
As soon as those words were said he was back within the temple, dark and moist. He looked to his Zanpakutō and pulled it free from the tree, the small indent sealing itself a moment later, and sheathed it.
He looked towards the tree, studying it for any noticeable changes. Physically nothing had been altered, no further growth or alteration in hue or structure, yet it was spiritually that had been changed. Ichigo could sense it now, the pulsing energy that ripples through the bark and the ground he stood on.
"What have you done?" Quintas asked.
"The tree is connected to the dream, and now its power will flow through here and into the city. But soon this same gift will spread to the other trees that were planted around this barren wasteland, and then life will flourish once more." Druantia said.
"A noble gift great spirit." Baine said, bowing towards Druantia. "You honor us for restoring these lands to their former glory."
"Yet they do not do as they promised." Shandris said, crossing her arms and raising a brow as she regarded the spirit. "You intended for this to be where the Highborne are removed from all blame, yet the only ones who seem to have made reparations are my own people. How do you intend to make this their own?"
Ichigo could see the Tauren bristle a little at the less than formal question, any sort of disrespect towards the spirits they did not take kindly towards. Although he had to expect they were going to ask the same question soon enough, but probably with more measured words than what Shandris did.
"That will come now. Codexia, please bring them in." Druantia replied, showing no signs of being offended as her scions seem to be.
The Primalist walked to the entryway and disappeared down the long dark corridor, and did not return for several minutes. But when she re-emerged again from the shadows she did not come alone, over a dozen people came in behind her. All of them were Highborne, but not of the soldiery or magi, all were clothed in common attire that showed them to be citizens.
Leading this small group was Caelyb, who followed close behind Codexia, and he guided them to the foot of the Great Tree. The short haired elf looked to the Spirit of Life for a moment, waiting for some permission to proceed, and when she gave a gentle incline of her head he reached forward.
When his hand touched the tree a surge of power was felt, Ichigo recognized it immediately and he was surprised when it seemed to resonate with the one touching it. It lasted only a second but it did happen, and from the looks of it Mairne and Hamuul had sensed it as well.
"I… can feel it." Caelyb said, raising his hand and bathing it in natural energies.
Ichigo didn't have to know everyone was surprised by the sight, he certainly was, because right now Caelyb was using nature magic right in front of them. A wave of his hand and whatever plant matter and flora was on the ground bloomed.
"This is… incredible." Caelyb continued, examining his hands that pulsed with vibrant golden and jade energy.
Ichigo looked to the tree, narrowing his eyes as he examined it, what the hell could have done that? He tried to wrap his mind around it and then he had a thought, could it actually be that?
"How is this possible? How does he possess power of nature?" Hamuul spoke up.
"Because of me." Ichigo said, crossing his arms and looking at the spirits.
"The boy is smarter than he appears." Erebus hissed out, narrowing its white eyes.
"Wise, for he knows his power better than we do." Veles countered.
Ichigo knew exactly what this was, he had seen only one thing similar to this before and the context of this situation reminded him of one thing. A Zanpakutō being impaled into a living being, a blessing to be given to the user, and that being a function of said weapon. It all reminded him of the night when Rukia gave him her Shinigami powers.
"You took some of my power, or more likely, you took my Zanpakutō's ability to transfer power onto others when impaled. That tree didn't just take the swords ability to enter the Emerald Dream, which I think is because of the symbols ability to send souls there, but it actually took the function of it to trade a portion of my power onto others." Ichigo replied.
He never knew the mechanics of trading power with people, but Substitutes were always meant to receive a portion of a Shinigami's power and have it for a short time. His case was a little different but the premise should be the same, his Zanpakutō technically had the same functions as a normal Zanpakutō regardless if it was not Rukia's.
Open a Senkaimon, cleanse a hollow, Konsō, and most certainly distribute power if one wills it.
"You are correct, your power is what will allow one to accept the power of the tree and in turn the desire to become a Primalist. Only those who truly wish to take up our ways may do so, for the Heart must accept this task fully otherwise it will never be able to harness the powers we bestow upon them." Druantia replied.
As she spoke others stepped forward, they touched the tree and walked away with a flicker of power within themselves. He could sense it, feel the energy from the trees resonating within them and giving them the Primalistic power.
"You intend to give the Highborne this gift?" Hamuul asked, sounding shocked of such a thing.
"Yes, they are worthy of it, for they know in their hearts that to stop tyranny and evil they must take up the mantle themselves. That while their leaders are no longer her, that they can lead themselves and do good in spite of having none to guide them." Druantia responded.
"But, they will need to know the way, to understand what it is that they must do." Veles said, standing above the Tauren. "We wish for you to be the ones to teach them the way."
Ichigo raised a brow at the request, although his reaction was mild compared to everyone else. He had to look around and actually see all the faces, some were humorous to see. Most appeared shocked, openly gaping at the request and declaration, even those being requested to do the deed.
The Highborne, specifically the three nobles, were babbling incoherently and looks like they had a stroke right now. Not that he could blame them, the Spirits had basically asked the Tauren to occupy the city and be spiritual guides for the Highborne. He was willing to bet there was an appropriate anecdote to go with this situation but he couldn't for the life of him come up with one.
"What… what?" Maluineth said, unable to do anything but watch the scene unfold before her.
"I see, that is a… surprising request." Mairne said, looking troubled for a moment, unsure what to do.
He turned to his leader, Baine stood there and was quick to return to his stoic visage and think deeply on the task set before him. He was quiet, for a long while, before he made a move.
He turned towards the Spirits and spoke up.
"My people still will seek justice, and those three should still be tried for whatever crimes they have committed. But if you wish us to guide the rest of these people down a path of stability and cohesion with nature and the elements." Baine spoke up, looking towards Caelyb and the small gathering of Highborne. "I will do so here, I ask that this city become a Shamanistic commune, so that all races who take up the path to bring balance to the elements can come and be one. Let my people stand guard over it and all who walk through these streets, and I will promise no harm shall come to any who follow our path."
The Spirits did not wait for more than a second before they gave their acceptance.
"Your mercy and generosity is a testament to your race young one, I thank you for doing this." Thetis said, words soft and sincere.
"The Tauren are welcome in this city, word has already been spread by our newest acolytes." Druantia spoke up, gesturing towards Caelyb. "Many more await, to receive our gifts and learn your wisdom."
Then Druantia turned towards Shandris and hovered towards her, stopping only a few feet from the Sentinel-General.
"I thank you for your restraint, know that this city will also welcome those of the Circle here as well, do not fear." Druantia said, her words having a strange quality as if trying to soothe frayed nerves.
Shandris did not respond, not even an acknowledgement of her words, that was a little concerning.
Druantia turned back and all the Spirits huddled near the tree, Ichigo chose to back away and watch the events unfold. For the first time it seemed that the Tauren and Highborne lost all sense of hate and anxiety, they were coming together under the shadows of the Primal Spirits and seemed to be speaking.
The next few minutes were awkward between all parties, but he saw the uncomfortable interactions gave way to mutual conversation. Even Mordent seemed to step forward to speak, going right up to Baine to speak with him. Hamuul and Mairne were talking with Codexia and Caelyb. Soon enough Maluineth and Tylarwin stepped forward, the entire room once filled with people who wanted to fight or imprison the other was now having idle conversation with one another.
It was so shocking, past experience has shown that such a thing, so soon after a conflict and with the parties still holding onto grudges couldn't interact like this. Yet here he was, watching a scene he didn't know was possible without someone with a neutral view of things to set people straight.
"Looks like I didn't need to be here at all."
But when he heard the rushed footsteps of people leaving did he turn and find that Shandris and her troop were marching out of the temple. Ichigo was surprised with the sudden move, what the hell had gotten into her?
"This isn't good." Caren said, quickly rushing over to Quintas who was lifting up Adelina in his arms.
Ichigo didn't know what she meant, not until he thought about what the Spirits had said and what Baine had promised them. He wanted to groan, it would seem that someone was going to be leaving here bitter.
"Come on, lets catch up with her." Ichigo said.
Reveiws:
TheBronzeLine: I am evil, because that is how I am. But in a way what happens next as you see takes up a lot of space. Near ten thousand words had to be made for this chapter. Also more is on its way, promise.
Blindluck92: His argument was good, but he didn't sell it like he usually does and that was the problem, had he actually been able to dig down and show off the wisdom of this he could have convinced Shandris wholeheartedly. But in the end Shandris is still going to need to take the city because she needs to secure it, why? Next chapter you will find ou.
PTSD for Ichigo is a given, there are times when he has shown his resolve but if the conditions are right someone can point out his flaws and the chinks in his armour and actually bring him down. Aizen did it. But ichigo holds onto every fault and failing he has ever made and doesn't let it go, that is why he is so fragile and his power is so wild, he is a mess.
Billykeo95: Thanks
Reality Deviant: Glad to hear it.
Black Cross0: That is true, the only way for his word to be realized is for people to realize the importance of them and to follow their example. Once he has people following him than he truly can make a difference for everyone.
Astroga121: Hey, cliffhangers keep people hooked.
Actually Baine and Mairne hold Ichigo in high regard for his honor and wisdom, but they don't trust the Highborne to listen to that Wisdom when it comes time for negotiations. Mairne thinks that the Highborne will not surrender or negotiate because they are too arrogant, a sentiment he shares with Baine.
Kenji Riku: Codexia originally intended to force the Highborne to comply with the Spirits and Horde in order to survive. But in this case she is allowing them to make a choice and do what they feel is in their own best interest.
Bicorn: Resistant but not completely, the Fel feeds of Life energies which is also Spiritual energy. Meaning that it is draining him of his power and life force. He is only immune to a degree. By the way thanks for the correction.
ZiggySmallz: Yeah, but this chapter came out much better than before. I think that I should actually start this as a trend, write up a chapter and rewrite it to be better. The content is greatly improved and much more quickly done. Takes longer but it works.
Prince Sheogorath: Was that ending cheap? Let me know what you think.
Stuporman: It happens to the best of us, currently playing through South Park and Shadow of War and the new Assassins Creed. They are taking up so much of my time now.
Maluineth never really was able to get into politics because of Prince Tortheldrin and her father's banishment. It only made her crave to return to power and reclaim what status she could.
Trust me when I say that the Highborne will not be getting off scot free from anything they did, while this chapter ends on that note the Highborne will not be getting off from their crimes. They will be tried and punished accordingly but that will come later.
Also his speech was not meant to be all there, he had only just woken up and he is still suffering from what happened down in Maraudon, he is not all there at the moment.
Leapinglemur: They most certainly fixed thing, for the moment that is.
Lawrence HB: I can understand that, Warcraft's End Game content is not always up to keeping people around sadly. I am only just getting back into it and am enjoying actually levelling up throught the game this time around. Eager to get to Wrath content soon because that was the best in my opinion.
Romance has been something of a limited thing in Bleach sadly, canon really never showed it off until the epilogue and that sucked. But here there will actually be development towards it, I wanted to establish things and actually the next arc ends with development on that part with Ichigo and another character.
Also I like romance stories as well, and in all my stories I do try to show off some for of romantic plot at some point but for Transcendence I really want to cement it and give a massive reason for someone to fall in love with Ichigo. I have a dozen possible candidates to who would fall for him, and all of them are cool. So cool. But they need to make an appearance and he needs to woo them with his boyish charm and roguish attitude.
CelticMonk: Sorry about that, the Nightmare scene did get a little repetitive.
Star: Tylarwin was still an accomplice in the actions of the other Nobles and did provide troops and soldiers to supporting their many endeavours. He is technically not at fault for doing anything personally but he did aid them. So it is guilty by association for him.
Rexxar has returned to the Wilds, his home. It is where a Mok'nathal must always be.
Matemeo3: Yeah, it happens. Been happening in a lot of TV shows and Movies lately where they kill off the cool guys early for no reason. It simply happens too soon.
A'orean never suspected Mildreas would fall so low, to use the Fel or even turn against him. Mildreas even says so himself that he never wanted to kill A'orean and that he was guilty over doing it, because they were the closest of friends. Mildreas simply got too greedy and this is what happens, but what truly helped A'orean was the Draught clearing his mind enough to stop plotting and to realize what he was doing was wrong.
