Rangiku thinks of her captain as something like a brother.

Sometimes, he's older.

Other times, he's younger.

Most of the time, he just needs to loosen up.

Matsumoto has made it her own personal mission to make sure her child genius captain doesn't forget how to have fun.

She has taken this mission upon herself mostly because her captain has always felt that he has had something to prove. He was the youngest to ascend to the rank of captain, and as such, many people often questioned just how competent the new head of Division 10 actually was.

Rangiku took all of this in stride, never once questioning the decision. She knew he had his own reasons for doing this.

Loyalty to one's own division his held in the highest regard in the Gotei 13, and this is why she doesn't hesitate when it comes to following her captain.

She might skip out on the paperwork to go out drinking with Kyuraku-taichou, and she might believe that the middle of the afternoon is a perfectly acceptable time to go off and read horoscopes, but when it comes down to it, she knows when the time is right for each.

However, Hitsugaya-taichou hasn't mastered such skills yet.

Therefore, Rangiku has taken it upon herself to teach her captain such important and necessary skills.

It's what she considers her sisterly duty.

Both from the perspective as an older sister, dispensing sage advice on the younger generation, as well as from the viewpoint of a younger sister, who must tease the older ones mercilessly.

Half the fun of teasing someone is seeing the frazzled and frustrated reactions, of course.

Just because you have a lot to prove to others doesn't mean that you have to forget how to have fun in the process. If everyone had that happen to them, Rangiku believes there would be more people like Kuchiki-taichou around then there are already.

So, whenever Rangiku decides to make a night of it and go out drinking, she often tries to drag her reluctant captain along with her.

Hitsugaya-taichou grumbles and insists that he's only coming along to make sure Rangiku makes it back to their division headquarters in one piece at the end of the night.

The 10th Division Vice-Captain knows that this really isn't all that necessary. She did learn how to hold her liquor from Kyuraku-taichou, who is arguably the best.

But she understands.

Because she does, Rangiku just smiles and pours him a cup of sake.

She still has a lot of work cut out for her, but there is definite improvement. She managed to get him to actually drink some of the sake she offered last time.

She marks this as a personal victory, and plots over what she should try next. Maybe something from that horoscope book might provide a useful suggestion.

Her captain may constantly feel the need to prove he is just as good as everyone else, despite his youth. Hitsugaya-taichou most definitely grew up way too fast, and he also needs to work on that temper of his.

Her captain doesn't have to prove a thing to her, though. She knows his more than capable of his position.

Which is why she will be loyal until the end, but still take it upon herself to remind her captain that the position isn't everything.
