Chapter 282: Down on Main Street

Monday, January 30th, Evening

Soon after they got to the municipal parking lot, Ivy got out of the car. Trin kept a brisk pace crossed the car park, which Ivy initially had trouble keeping up with. Finally, they reached the street, and Ivy looked around.

The streets weren't deserted, per se, but neither were they packed with people. The buildings seemed to have people in them, though. The buildings had an older feel to them; they might have stood here before the turn of the twentieth century. Ivy remembered Kay telling her that the area had a remarkable number of authentic antebellum buildings, as the area hadn't been burned or bombarded.

Ivy noted Trin led her to this nondescript two-story building. The style was typical of what she saw around here. Ivy noted that it looked like apartments were on the second floor. The sign above the first-floor storefront said, "Rerun's Bar and Grill." Ivy nodded, figuring this is where they were coming.

Trin smiled and opened the door. Ivy stepped through, and she got what she expected. The place wasn't Wonderland, nor was it a dive bar, either. If anything, Ivy begged it was once a Mexican Restaurant; it had the tiling and style. At least to her, the difference is the large flat-screen TVs with sports on all of them.

Ivy watched as Trin walked over to the bar. The Adams woman started to casually talk to the short, dark-haired Hispanic looking man behind it. They both nodded and laughed; finally, Trin signaled Ivy to come over.

Ivy slowly walked over to the bar and looked at Trin. Slowly, Ivy turned to look at the man behind the bar. He smiled a friendly smile at Ivy.

"Ivy, this is my friend from high school, Rerun," Trin said, introducing them.

"Rerun?" Ivy asked.

Rerun nodded, "Yeah, a nickname, weird I know," he said.

"Well, it's nice to meet you, Rerun," Ivy said.

"Pleasure is all mine," Rerun said, "Trin tells me you come from Chicago."

"Yeah, born and bred," Ivy said.

"So, what brings you to our little piece of the world?" Rerun asked.

"Trin didn't tell you?" Ivy asked.

"No, just said your name, and you're from Chicago," Rerun said.

Ivy looked at Trin for a long moment. The gears in Ivy's head turned a moment of two; finally, she nodded. Turning back to Rerun and smiled.

"I'm here for the ceremony before tomorrow's girls' basketball game," Ivy said.

"Really? Came all the way from Chicago for that? Hey, that reminds me do you know Kay Scott?" Rerun asked.

Ivy smiled and laughed a little. "Know Kay? Of course, she's the reason I came here," she said.

"Oh, really? Assistant? Handler?" Rerun asked.

"I'm not her assistant, but I've been known to handle her," Ivy said.

Trin chuckled a bit. Rerun looked at Ivy, a bit confused. "What does that mean?" Rerun asked.

"I'm her girlfriend," Ivy said.

"Oh," Rerun said.

Now it was Ivy's turn to look confused. "That's a different reaction," she said.

"It's a bit of a complex situation," Trin said.

"Why is everything about this place, either complex or a long story?" Ivy asked, "I'm sick of hearing those responses."

"Well, that's Kay," Rerun said.

"Hell, that's most of the Scotts," Trin said.

Rerun nodded, just enough, to tell Trin he heard her. Ivy noted the nod wasn't enough to tell Trin; he agreed. "You've met Ellie, right?" Rerun asked.

"The other night," Ivy said.

Rerun chuckled, "No filter on that one, is there?" he asked.

Ivy shook her head and chuckled a little in agreement, "I'd agree, she doesn't have a filter," she said.

"Hard to believe Kay and Ellie are twins, right?" Trin said.

"Yeah, I've not known many twins, but none like those two," Ivy said.

"Kay, as you know, is very much Ellie's polar opposite," Trin said.

"Some would say Ellie is the opposite of Kay," Ivy said.

"It's all a matter of perception," Rerun said.

"I've always wondered about that," Ivy said, "The twins that is."

"Just their personalities, they have always been very different people," Rerun said.

"Who is Carrie Garland?" Ivy asked.

"Now, that's a can of worms," Rerun said.

"A can of worms?" Ivy asked.

"Carrie Garland was, well is Carolyn Drake, the oldest daughter, and favorite child of William Drake, who, until his death, was the wealthiest man in the area," Rerun said.

"So?" Ivy asked with a shrug.

"Kay also dated her daughter Connie," Trin said.

"Okay, so why would she be emailing Kay?" Ivy asked.

Trin shrugged, "I wouldn't know; I'd ask Kay about it," she said.

Ivy asked, "Sure," she said, indicating that drawing blood from a stone would be easier.

Trin smiled a knowing smile and looked at Rerun. "Did Izzy and Ashlyn show up yet?" she asked.

Rerun nodded, "Yeah, they're in the back. Mina's already taken orders from them," he said.

"Mina?" Ivy asked absentmindedly.

"His wife," Trin said.

"Oh," Ivy said.

"Thanks, Rerun," Trin said and gently grabbed Ivy's wrist, "Come on, we have people waiting."

"Why is everyone so evasive about Kay and her past?" Ivy asked.

"Do you talk about some of the more, how shall we call them, unsavory parts of your family's history?" Trin asked.

Ivy shrugged and looked at Trin. One thing Ivy did note is that Trin is stronger than she looked. "Not always, I would think," Ivy said.

"You think?" Trin asked.

"If they're unsavory secrets, you usually won't talk about them, right?" Ivy asked.

Trin canted her head, "You have a point there," she said.

Trin crossed through an arch into the back room. The room was mostly empty. Ivy looked around and spotted Izzy sitting at one table. Izzy waved at them, and Trin returned it. Ivy could barely see past Trin but caught that someone sat at the table with Izzy but couldn't see more of this person.

Trin tugged again and led Ivy to the table. Now Ivy could see the other person sitting at the table. Ivy noted this new woman is taller than Izzy, but that wasn't difficult, as Izzy was on the bottom end of average height. This woman was as tall if not taller than Ivy herself. Even Trin looked short compared to this woman. Ivy also noted this new woman has blonde hair, while everyone else had dark hair.

Trin looked at the blonde, "Thanks for joining us, Ashlyn; I know it's tough," she said, with a tone that Ivy didn't recognize but didn't trust.
