POV Garp

With a lazy swing of his right hand Garp diced the boulder atop Mt. Columbo in to progressively larger chunks of cubes using basic Wind Blades. While he was no Swordsman he has fought and beat enough of them to have a rudimentary understanding of their skills and Wind Blade is one of the first demarcating line between an amateur and a serious practitioner on the path to become a True Swordsman alongside the ability to cut steel.

Garp deposited a series of stone cubes starting with a five feet by five feet by five feet stone cube and ending with ten by ten by ten one in front a Luffy star struck by strength displayed by Garp, Garp patted the smallest stone and said, "Now, brat, break the stone with a single hit, punch it, kick it, headbutt it, bite it, I don't care, but the stone should break in a single hit. Use your strongest attack."

Luffy, who was damn near vibrating with enthusiasm, nodded his head, went to the edge of the mountain top, started charging to build up momentum, stretched both his hands into the air, and yelled "Gomu Gomu no Bazooka!" and brought down both his hands onto the stone, just as he was about to actually hit the stone Garp pushed the stone block aside with a gentle push of his palm in a move Luffy couldn't follow with his senses, and Luffys attack landed, hit the ground and cracked it and made a small crater.

"Brat, you failed to break the stone!", Grap said matter of factly.

"Gramps! You cheated!", Luffy pouted in turn.

"I told you to break the stone, you failed to break the stone. You Failed! Now listen well, brat, this is your first and most important lesson. Your Strongest Attack is Your Fastest Attack. You are not strong enough to fuck around in a fight, You hit Fast, you hit HARD. You have stamina brat, I made sure of it, nobody can last as long in a fight as you and your brother can, at least in your range. Now this training is about increasing that RANGE, Do you understand?"

The brat nodded.

So the training began in earnest, Garp trained Luffy in Haki the same way he learnt it, by going against another's Haki, oh the Marine trainer tried to teach it to Garp the traditional way, with way too many explanations, meditations and exercises, but none of those managed to do anything for Garp, his eyes glazed over during explanations, he dozed during meditation and exercises entirely failed to push Garp to desperation to reach out to his Haki, with his stamina they did not even manage to make Garp break a sweat.

It was fighting against an opponent who was just out of Garps range, who had Haki of his own that made Garp tap into his Haki and use Armament Haki on his fists for the first time, Garp unlocked his Observation Haki in the middle of a war and he first unleashed his Conquerors Haki unconsciously in response to Rogers own.

Garp is sure Luffy would unlock his own Haki the same way if left alone, but the entire point of this training is teach Luffy now, because Garp sincerely doubts the World would let Luffy grow to that point.

There is no point teaching Luffy Armament Haki through sparring, the gulf of strength between them is so vast and worse Luffy knows that he cannot beat Garp in a fight and that Garp won't really kill him, as menacing and frightening as Garp could be, there would be no real pressure, to unlock Haki, Luffy needs a challenge he believes he could overcome with just a bit more effort and Luffy needs to desperately want that achievement.

So Garp asked Luffy to unleash his every attack and took it on Garps own body to get a measure of brats strength, then Garp riled up the brat insulting his pitiful strength. When Garp is satisfied with the level of infuriated Luffy is, he commanded Luffy to break the smallest of stones Garp arranged. What he did not tell Luffy is that Garp infused the rock with just enough of his Haki so that it will break if Luffy hit with just a bit more strength than the brat is capable of outputting at the moment.

The aim of the exercise is twofold, either the brat grows strong enough to break the Haki infused stone through sheer physical force or he finally gets the feel for the Garps Haki and becomes desperate enough in his desire to break the stone. Haki is invisible to naked eye or any other sense really, only someone with their own Haki unlocked could perceive it, so getting a feel for it is same as unlocking it.

There are enough stones for todays session, even if Garp had to use up all the mountains on their island the brat is unlocking his Haki before Garp has to return to Marineford.
