It had taken a long time for Demyx to realize how he felt; or at least, to realize what emotion he was remembering since they didn't--and deep down inside he knew, they all knew, they never would-- have Hearts. And when he finally did figure it out what it was already too late because he was watching the one person who made him remember leave him and the castle and everything but ambition and a blonde witch behind.
Even when he stepped forward, grabbing hold of the brunette and forcing a clumsy kiss at the corner of his mouth, he knew it would never be enough; he would never be enough. And that was made obvious when Marluxia pulled back, in surprise or anger it didn't matter because this was it and Demyx had to get that one action out. Eleven left in a flurry of black leather and Darkness so quickly that the only thing the Melodious Nocturne could register was the lingering smell of cherry blossoms by the time he was gone. And vaguely, as he felt himself go blank, he noticed it was raining harder than usual outside.
Xigbar asked him one day, after the musician had been oddly quiet for more than a week, why he bothered to care so much. He would just get his Heart broken by someone like Marluxia and, laughing at his own joke, left before Nine could reply; which he was grateful because he knew Xigbar wouldn't understand if he told him. He was pretty sure no one in the castle would quite understand. How could they understand when what he admired was the smugness everyone hated? Or that he loved--at least the closest thing he could get to love--the way Marluxia almost looked like a dancer with every graceful step and precise ark of his scythe. Or the gentleness he only portrayed to his flowers that awed Demyx because he seemed human--until Eleven turned a fresh bud into a snapping monster.
But it was too late; Marluxia had chosen Castle Oblivion--and Demyx couldn't blame him--over some silly musician who was too dense to figure out what was going on his own head. And it would probably always be that way.
"Hey Marly--"
"--Must you use that name?"
"Yeah I must! So, hey, why do you want to go to Castle Oblivion so bad?"
"The Superior gave me orders."
"Well, yeah, but you weren't this excited about it before. So what changed your mind?"
"Namine did."
"Oh...How?"
"She reminds me of a person who makes me feel like I have a Heart."
"Well, why don't you stay with the other person?"
"Because I want a Heart before that happens and she's the fastest way to it."
"Really? I hope we'll both have Hearts someday."
"...So do I."
"Marly! Your plant! It's eating me!"
"Imbecile! You shouldn't have been provoking her!"
