Chapter 448: Los Angeles

Tuesday, February 14th, Early Morning

Sitting up in her on-call bed, she looked at the person standing in the doorway. She rubbed her eyes, stretched out, and then adjusted the sports bra she wore. Finally, she rubbed her mouth.

"What's the case?" Doctor Candace "Candi" Scott MD, asked.

"Can I turn on the light?" Doctor Fawn Cabot, MD, asked.

"Sure, Fawn," Candi said and pressed the palms of her hands against her forehead as the lights came on, "What's the case?"

"No, case," Fawn said, stepped into the small room, and closed the door.

"So, why did you wake me?" Candi asked.

"We need to talk," Fawn said.

"About and at this hour?" Candi asked.

"You know Dani got engaged, right?" Fawn asked.

Candi stretched with her arms over her head. This also meant she leaned back and jutted out her chest. Even though she was very athletic, Candi had very feminine curves, and it would confuse other women when she did stuff like this.

"I heard and so?" Candi asked.

"Well, I checked the schedule, and we're all off tonight," Fawn said.

"Yeah?" Candi asked.

"So, I was talking with Dani, and she agreed, she's inviting people over to the beach house to celebrate tonight," Fawn said.

"Okay, great, cool," Candi said.

"You seem so excited about this," Fawn said.

"Fawn, you woke me up," Candi said.

"Well, we need to talk about it," Fawn said.

"What about it?" Candi asked.

"We're having it at the beach house," Fawn said.

"It's your home," Candi said.

"Well, Dani has some of her fiancée friends coming over, so it's kind of an engagement party," Fawn said.

"I'm fine with it; they just have to stay out of my room," Candi said.

"I know that, as does Dani," Fawn said.

Candi shrugged, "Can I go back to sleep?" she asked.

"Why are you being grumpy?" Fawn asked.

"Fawn, you were my roommate for long?" Candi asked.

"A long time," Fawn said.

"What's one thing that I hate?" Candi asked.

"People, messing with your stuff," Fawn said.

"The other one," Candi said.

"Don't wake you up," Fawn said.

"Don't wake me up for small stuff," Candi said.

"So, this is small stuff?" Fawn asked.

Candi shrugged and leaned back against the headboard. "It's not really," she said.

Fawn nodded, walked over to the bed, and took a seat. "Is it because Dani's engaged?" Fawn asked.

Candi shook her head and looked past Fawn. "No, I've been looked down on by the nurses, and well, Dani and I've not been talking," she said.

"Candi, they overreacted to you helping a scared kid through a scary surgery," Fawn said.

"I was sent on vacation because of that," Candi said.

"You were sent on vacation to avoid you, burning out," Fawn said.

"I've never burned out before," Candi said.

"There's a first time for everything, and even you, Candi Scott, isn't superwoman," Fawn said.

Candi shook her head, "Why do I put up with you?" she asked.

Fawn laughed, "Outside your brother, I'm the only one that tells you the truth and calls you on your BS," she said.

Candi leaned forward, "What would I do without you?" she asked.

Fawn leaned towards Candi, "You'd be in a lot more fucked situation than making you take a vacation," she said.

"Yeah," Candi said.

Fawn nodded, "You know Dani is inviting several people over, including some of Marcial's friends," she said.

Candi shrugged, "So?" she asked.

"They are exactly your type," Fawn said.

"What type is that? Since when do I have a type? Have you ever known me to date?" Candi asked.

"No, but they are young and dynamic people," Fawn said.

"So?" Candi asked.

"Candance, you've got to break out of this funk," Fawn said.

"Maybe, once I reach my goal, then I'll think about it," Candi said.

"What happens when you miss a buzzer-beater?" Fawn asked.

"You demand the ball the next time," Candi said.

"So, you get right back on the horse, right?" Fawn asked.

"Yeah, but this is different, I feel totally shut off, and you know why," Candi said.

"I know; all I want is you to be social able, not look for your prince charming," Fawn said.

"Fine, I'll socialize," Candi said.

"No shop talk or basketball talk," Fawn said.

"None, unless in context," Candi said.

"Fair enough," Fawn said.

"I'm also not going to name drop," Candi said.

"Have I ever asked you to name-drop?" Fawn asked.

"No, but just making sure everyone is on the same page," Candi said.

"You're so paranoid," Fawn said.

"Long story," Candi said.

"Like all Scotts, it's a long story," Fawn said.

"They usually are," Candi said.

"It also means you don't want to talk about it," Fawn said.

Candi tilted her head and shrugged, "You could be right," she said.

"Well, I'm just worried that you and Dani might cause a bit of drama," Fawn said.

"I'll try to avoid it," Candi said.

"Good, I knew you could do it," Fawn said.

"Did you doubt me?" Candi asked.

"No, but what do you always tell me?" Fawn asked.

"Trust but verify," Candi said.

"Exactly," Fawn said.

"So, you woke me up for this?" Candi asked.

"Best to catch you off guard," Fawn said.

Candi shook her head, "You're such a bitch," she said.

"But you love me for it," Fawn said.

Candi laughed, shook her head, and looked at Fawn. "You're right," she said.

Fawn smiled, and Candi leaned forward, and the two women hugged. After they broke apart, they looked at each other.

"Now, get out of here so I can get some sleep," Candi said.

"Okay, okay," Fawn said and got up. Candi laid back down and went back to sleep.
