Kanna and her sister were not allowed to leave the city, but the sea was calm and Kanna was sure that she could steer their canoe safely even though she had never before piloted it outside the canals.
Kanna was twelve, and more confident about everything than she had any right to be.
That confidence convinced her friends (and little sister) that they should come with her and convinced the waterbender manning the one of the side locks that they should be allowed out, but it had no effect on the sea.
Kanna was perfectly fine, until the canoe capsized.
Even after that, Kanna was fine. She was a strong swimmer and had no difficulty making it from where the waves had tossed her to the overturned boat. Ullori and Yugoda were fine as well, since neither of them had not been swept very far from the canoe.
But the only sign of Nuka was a dark head floating farther and farther away every second and Kanna knew, even before she pushed off from the canoe, that she and her sister would both drown.
Then she was flying up with the water, to land on the deck of a boat.
