"I don't like any of them," Kanna confessed to her sister one evening after another suitor had left.
"You're spoiled for choice," Nuka said. "Ullori married the first man her parents suggested. Yugoda only had to think a little because her parents considered three different matches. But Father will let you marry anyone you please and so you can't make up your mind."
"I can't make up my mind because none of them are any good," Kanna said.
The look Nuka gave her sister was full of sympathy and far too much knowledge for a girl of fourteen. "You turn sixteen at the end of the year. You'll have to pick one of them by then. Father will let you marry anyone, but he won't let you not marry at all."
"You've already picked your husband, haven't you?"
Nuka nodded. "Tinook son of Tiriaq the master waterbender. I like him enough and he's reasonably well off. Also handsome. Between all of that, I don't think any of the other boys can compare."
As Kanna drifted off to sleep that night, she wondered if her father had really meant it when he had said anyone she pleased.
