Her last few weeks in the Earth Kingdom passed like one long dream. Kanna woke up on Kyoshi Island to the sound of, "It's hard to say when the next boat will come. Trade with the Southern Water Tribe has dropped off a lot in the past few years."

"Because of the war?" Kanna asked. She had always kept well to the east of the front lines, but there had been no escaping mention of the war. The Northern Water Tribe had easily fended off the Fire Nation, but the Earth Kingdom was having more difficulty.

"Kyoshi Island is neutral. So is the Southern Water Tribe, as far as I know. But there have been a lot of pirates moving into the area recently."

Pirates. Kanna had heard of them as a child, mostly in stories where they were handily defeated by Northern Water Tribe warriors. Was their sister tribe less capable of fending off attacks? Or did pirates regularly target an area for months on end searching for a weak point? Kanna had no way to know.

She would learn, Kanna decided. If the Southern Water Tribe considered such interest inappropriate for a woman, she didn't care.
