"Have pirates ever attacked Kyoshi Island," Kanna asked over dinner.

Her hostess mulled it over before answering. "I suppose that depends on what you mean by a pirate attack."

Kanna grimaced and the old lady laughed.

"That's not much of an answer, is it? There's never been a direct attack on the town. The Unagi inhabits the harbor and those foolish enough to sail in without knowing how to keep it at bay get eaten. There have been raids on some of the outlying farms, but the warriors always drive off any pirates before they can do too much damage."

"The Warriors?"

"The Kyoshi Warriors." The hostess smiled proudly, in the way that Kanna was used to seeing when people boasted about their children's accomplishments. "They pattern themselves after the late avatar, and use her techniques to defend the island."

"How does that work when none of them can bend all the elements?" Kanna asked. The warriors might fight in groups of four– one for each element– if the island housed some airbenders who had slipped the Fire Nation's notice.

"Avatar Kyoshi didn't only fight with bending. Go to the dojo tomorrow. You'll see."
