There were gasps and glares from the rest of the warriors in the dojo, but Hoshi herself only chuckled. "That attitude is only going to get you in trouble. We trade enough with the Southern Water Tribe to know that they're still sore about the North refusing their aid because it contained 'warrior girls.'"

"But where are all the women?" Kanna couldn't quite bring herself to believe that there weren't any, not when the Kyoshi Warriors were responsible for keeping the island safe.

"Most of the older warriors don't spend much time in the dojo."

"Are they out on patrol?" The warriors of the Northern Water Tribe spent most of their time hunting or patrolling rather than training, and Kanna felt rather foolish for assuming that it would be different on Kyoshi.

"I think you misunderstand. The Kyoshi Warriors aren't an army or a police force. Our purpose isn't to fight, but to keep the legacy of Avatar Kyoshi alive. Every girl on the island spends a few years learning the ways of Kyoshi, but there's no obligation to keep in practice."

"What if you're attacked?"

Hoshi grinned. "No obligation doesn't mean no one practices."
