Summary: A tiny little snippet I wrote this morning
'cause I needed a hug.
Beka sat nursing a cup of hot tea. The last slipstream event had been a rough one and she was exhausted. A migraine threatened heavily just behind her right eye and her stomach was making it known that it didn't want anything to do with food or drink right now. She held the cup up to her face and breathed deeply. Trance had said that drinking the tea was optional; inhaling the warm mist rising off the cup would be enough to ease the headache. She closed her eyes and hunched over the table.
"Hey boss!" Harper said loudly, startling her out of her near sleep. "That was some trip huh?" He poured himself a cup of coffee. "I've got slipstream back on line but there are a bunch of those AG coils I'm going to have to recharge."
Beka groaned, "Harper have you been to bed yet?"
"No time for sleep whilst my lady is in distress." He grinned and she noticed the colorful bruise that was forming on his cheekbone.
"What happened?" she motioned in vague reference to her own face.
"I kinda lost my grip during our last ride through." He grinned. "It looks like even the pilot had a rough go of it."
Beka moaned and inhaled the steamed from the cup. "Sorry 'bout that."
"Hey
it ain't your fault boss, I blame it on the bozos shooting at us."
He set a plate down in front of her and she noted that it held two
pieces of toast, buttered but no jelly.
"My mum always said it
would cure an upset stomach."
Beka smiled up at the engineer, "Thanks Harper."
"Don't mention it." he said "I gotta get back to those coils, they ain't gonna recharge by themselves." He held up his hands showing her the minute but painful spark burns on his fingers. "I just needed to recharge myself a bit before I got back on it."
Beka stood up and blocked his exit. She threw her arms and around the startled young man and hugged him tightly.
"What'd you do that for?" he asked when she at last released him.
Beka sighed contentedly
as the pain in her head disappeared, "Cause I need that."
Trance's tea be dammed, it was a Harper hug that cured what
ailed her.
