1 Times that I have heard him admit he couldn't do something.
2 The number of people he admits to trusting.
3 Hours he sleeps a night.
4 Times he's surprised me with his disregard for his own life over someone else's.
5 Number of times I've been afraid he was dying.
6 Cups of coffee he drinks a day.
7 Times today I've asked Trance if he would be okay.
8 How old he was when his parents died.
9 Cans of Sparky Cola he drinks a day.
10 Number of times I've told him that I love him.
That last one isn't true… I wish it was, I want it to be. I'm going to change that right here, right now.
"Seamus?" Beka asked. "Come on Shorty, you gotta
wake up now, I need to tell you something really important.
Harper?"
His eyes opened and he blinked. I dimmed the lights a
little.
"Hey, you." He murmured.
"Feel better?"
"A little." He sat up and coughed, I smiled and slipped my arm around him, pulling him into a hug.
"What's that for?"
"You." I laughed at the puzzled expression on his pale face. "I just wanted to tell you how much I love you Seamus."
His eyebrows rose and he pulled back a little, looking at me like he thought I was crazy. "Are you feeling okay?" he asked.
"I've been thinking about us."
"Us? There's an us?"
I resisted the urge to smack him upside the head, instead I kissed his cheek. The stubble reminded me how long he'd been unconscious. "Not that kind of us. You know you're like family to me right?"
"Hey, um whatever it was that I did, I'm sorry…"
I grabbed his chin, wondering how he could be so paranoid and fearful when I was only trying to let him know how much he meant to me. "I'm not trying to get rid of you Harper." I said firmly. "I will never leave you and I hope you don't having any plans on running out on me either."
He smiled and relaxed against me with a sigh, "Not as long as you keep me supplied with Sparky."
"Is that a hint?"
"Please?" He grinned at me.
How could I resist those dimples? "Sure thing kiddo." I reached back and grabbed the can I'd brought along, knowing that he'd be dying for the caffeine kick.
He popped the top and gulped down half the can before he looked shyly at me, "I love you too boss."
When he finished the can I helped him settle back on the bed and tucked the covers around him.
"You know I can't be telling you that all the time, I have an image to keep up."
"Oh, me too" I laughed, "So how about we just sign it?" I showed him how to form the letter 'L' and then point. "This will be our way of saying it anytime we want to and no one else has to know."
"I like it." He signed it at me and I returned it. He yawned.
I kissed his forehead, "See you in the morning Harper."
"Sure thing boss."
As I turned to leave I heard him whisper, "I love you Beka."
