Season 12 episode 20, Joe asked Jamie if his dad would have been more careful on the job if he knew he had a son. This is my version of that.

Frank sat at his kitchen table enjoying his cup of coffee, his youngest son is in town which is perfect timing for his first personal off day, aside from Sunday dinners in two months.

"Morning dad" Jamie walked into the kitchen rubbing his left eye.

"Did you sleep well?" Frank sat his new paper aside.

"On my old twin mattress?" Frank laughed. "Hey, have you talked to Joe?" Jamie put his bowl, favorite cereal and milk on the table, sitting down.

"No, is something going on?" Frank wondered.

"Well, Erin called me last night, I guess Joe broke up with Angela and he's been acting off." confusion swirled in Frank's brain with what Jamie had just said.

"No, I haven't spoken to him, that's so odd."

"Yeah and he's not taking any calls, not Danny's, not Erin's not even mine." Jamie took a big bite of his cereal.

"Let me try to reach out." Frank pulled his phone out, having an incoming call on the screen.

"Reagan," Frank answered, Jamie continued to eat his cereal watching his father's face fade into a more serious look, causing him to lay his spoon down. "No, I haven't spoken with him but I do appreciate the call, I will call you back if I hear from him… thank you, Sergeant Renzulli." Frank ended the call, Jamie sat there eagerly by the second.

"So-" Jamie began.

"Joe didn't show up for his tour this morning, his sergeant said he was supposed to be there four hours ago and isn't taking anyone's call." Jamie's jaw dropped.

"You think he's okay?" Jamie stood up, out of all his siblings Joe was definitely the more responsible one it just didn't make sense. Frank dialed Joe's phone number and it went straight to voicemail.

"Get ready and let's go check in on him." Jamie nodded taking care of his mess darting upstairs, returning ready to go, the two-headed to the car dialing Danny a few rings went by;

"What's up kid." Danny sounded pretty busy with all the background noise.

"Hey, have you spoken to Joe?" Jamie wondered, Danny stopped what he was doing, Jackie giving him an odd look.

"I tried to call him last night, no answer." Frank and Jamie both gave each other a worried look. "What happened."

"We don't know Joe hasn't answered any of us and he didn't show up this morning for work." Danny had the same reaction as Jamie hearing the news, very unlike Joe. "On top of that, he broke things off with Angela." Danny knew as much from Erin.

"I'm heading over there now," Danny grabbed his keys

"Dad and I will meet you there." They agreed, hanging up.

"What's up Reagan?" Jackie asked, watching him make his way out.

"Something is going on with my brother Jack-" She nodded interrupting.

"Don't worry go, I'll handle everything from here." Jackie understood.

"Thanks for this," He left the precinct.

Arriving at Joe's apartment building they noticed his Chevelle parked in his parking spot so he's obviously home. When the three of them arrived at the eighth floor they cautiously approached Joe's front door, Frank knocked at the door, a minute or two past but still no answer, Danny pushed past Jamie banging on the door.

"Disturb the neighbors will you!" Frank looked at him like a madman.

"Joe! open the damn door!" Danny yelled, banging more.

"Okay, stop Danny," Jamie spoke, watching a neighbor peek out their door at them. They heard three locks unlock and the door open and there stood Joe looking as normal as ever.

"I-i" Danny had no words, physically Joe seemed like nothing was wrong with him.

"You didn't show up for your tour." Frank's PC voice came to life. Joe just stood there saying nothing.

"Are you going to say something or-" Jamie began

"What do you guys want," Joe said flatly, skimming past their worries.

"What do we want?" Danny repeated annoyed.

"Allow us in." Frank mostly ordered than asked. Joe walked away from the door leaving it open, when they walked the place was a wreck, again nothing like Joe. "What the hell is going on."

"Nothing is going on dad," Joe said walking into his kitchen cracking open a beer, Danny and Jamie made eye contact.

"Well, you could've fooled me!" Frank acknowledged.

"A beer at 10:54 am" Jamie took a step closer.

"Why are you guys here?" Joe seemed completely annoyed.

"We've been calling you since last night-" Jamie began

"Weird, that's how long I've been ignoring you all." Joe chugged his beer, tossing the empty can into the trash.

"Joseph." Frank boomed, he hardly uses his children's real names.

"What the hell is with you?" Danny walked closer to Joe smelling a foul amount of alcohol on him. "Is this about Angela?" Danny put his hand on Joe's shoulder which he immediately shook off.

"No it's not about her, nothing is wrong, so I'd appreciate it if you all would leave." Joe dismissed, they of course ignored his dismissal.

"We're not leaving until you explain why you didn't show up for work and ended things with Angela."

"You want to know why? Because I don't love her and I didn't want to go to work?" Joe shouted. "Does that work? now leave."

"What happened to you?" Joe finally looked over at Jamie, he was his best friend, he hated having to treat them like this.

"I'm sick of you," He said right to Jamie's face. "I'm sick of all of you, I'm sick of this job… I'm sick of this city!"

"You're drunk." Frank shook his head.

"Not drunk enough," Joe opened another beer which Danny took from his hands.

"Whatever," Joe walked out of the kitchen to his bedroom, "When you guys leave, lock up."

"I don't-" Jamie said, Joe, saying that hurt him, even if he's drunk. Danny looked at their father completely lost. Frank gave a look that told them he wanted to speak to Joe alone

"I guess we should leave." Jamie walked out the door, Danny looked at his father, usually, Joe is the comforting brother.

"I'll be back… Talk to him please?" Frank nodded.

Frank walked into Joe's bedroom, and just like the living room the bedroom was also a wreck. Frank sighed,

"Dad why are you still here,"

"Joseph, I'm your father, you will not disrespect me."

"I'm sorry dad, I just need to be alone." They both just sat there in silence.

"Can you tell me what's going on? I might not be able to give the advice you want to hear but I can help I'm sure." Joe bowed his head, tears threatening to fall, he wanted to tell his father what was going on, more than anything he wanted to tell him. "Have you spoken to Joe?"

"Why?" He answered quickly to the mention of his son. Frank seemed puzzled at the response. "I spoke to him yesterday,"

"How is he doing?"

"He's having fun dad, he is." Joe responded, he couldn't make eye contact, he'll end up breaking down.

"Okay son." His father stood up. "Just please take care of yourself, if you need time take days off, i don't want to hear from your CO's again." Joe nodded, "Lock the door, I'm heading out." Joe watched his father walk out, he closed and locked the door right behind him. Joe leaned on the door, he was completely lost, he wants his family's help with saving his son, but he doesn't know how to, he doesn't trust Camiea or Sonny, he knew regardless if he listens to them or not they could very well kill his son. Joe has decidedv there's only one thing to do, he's going to get his family to help.

"Oh my god." Joe closed his eyes at the same unknown number that called him last night on his phone screen now. "Hello"

"I thought you would never answer." Sonny snarled.

"Well I did."

"Why did your father, the PC and your two brothers leave your apartment? You didn't tell them anything, did you?"

"Of course not."

"Hmm, I don't believe you-"

"I don't care what you believe, I didn't tell them shit!"

"What- who the fuck are you talking to, In case you dont remember your son's life is in my hands!" Sonny screamed into the phone. "You raise your voice at me again and your going to hate what happens next."

"Okay… I'm sorry." Joe apologized, he figured it wouldn't be smart to push this psycho any further.

"You are sorry Joe Reagan… we told you to distance yourself from them, it's obvious you won't."

"It's not that I won't, it's that I can't! I already told my girlfriend we're done. I told them the same they won't leave me alone! What does this have to do with anything anyways? Why do they matter?"

"Because what you will end up doing for us, it'll be best if you have no one left. Stay by the phone and lose your attitude." Joe gripped the phone so tight when he heard the phone on the other end hang up. They wanted to break Joe and they seemed to be doing just that.

"He's lost it." Danny uttered the first words since they all had left Joe's apartment.

"I think that's an understatement." Frank responded

"I've never seen him so… cold." Jamie shook his head, his eyes shut tight. "Something is wrong… I mean really wrong." Jamie knew his older brothers better than any of his siblings, this is not Joe.

"I think we get that part kid," Danny added.

"Let's just give him a few days, maybe he'll come to his senses."

"And if he doesn't? how do you think Joe will feel coming home and his father is acting like a nut."

"Yeah dad," Jamie agreed with Danny. "Joe comes home in 13 days and look at the kind of change he'll be coming home to."

"Today is Wednesday, I say let's give him till Friday…"

Joe heard two knocks at the door, slowly getting up he looked through the peephole, what he saw broke his heart. He unlocked the locks opening the door. He again almost broke seeing Angela, and the hurt she had, he wanted to hug her and confined to her, but the risk was way too much.

"Here to get your stuff." Joe asked with the door wide open, she walked past him towards the bedroom. He sighed watching her, he was ready to shut the door when his shirt was grabbed pulling him into the hallway.

"Erin!?"

"What the hell is wrong with you Joey?" She pushed him against the wall outside his door.

"Nothing." He innocently replied.

"Could've fooled me." Erin removed her hands from him.

"I see you are just as rough as ever." He began to straighten out the collar of his shirt.

"Shut up, your little façade won't fool me, what the hell is going on with you?" Erin was obviously upset, aside from Jamie being best friends with Joe, she and Joe were closest in age and the two had spent a lot of time together in school, nearly had all the same friends etc.

"There's no façade-"

"You asking me if it was too soon to propose to Angela two weeks ago was a façade too?"

"You didn't tell her that, did you?"

"Not yet."

"Well don't, that was a mistake." He said, sadly seeming believable.

"You have no idea how much you've hurt that girl, how could you do this?" Erin took this personally, she was best friends with Angela in high school and that's how Joe and her met originally, years later after Joe's son was born, Angela and Joe finally got together.

"It's better this way. I can't be the man she needs right now okay, just leave it alone Erin."

"You're successful, handsome and have a teenage son, not many single parents can do that, but you did, and Angela didn't mind helping."

"Yeah and her efforts will never be forgotten-" Angela walked out of her apartment with two suitcases. She looked at Joe and looked away, which he had to admit hurt him.

"Erin if you could, can you grab my other suit case?"

"Of course." Erin gave Joe a dirty look helping Angela. Angela grabbed all her things, she looked around.

"What about your furniture?"

"You can keep it, I'll buy more in Portland." Joe's eyes widened.

"Portland?" Joe couldn't help himself, he knew her mother lived out there.

"Yup, I leave in two ½ weeks." Joe's heart was about to beat out of his chest.

"Ready to go?" Erin finished packing the rest of Angela's things away.

"Yeah. Good luck Joe." She began to walk off.

"Here is your book, don't forget it." Joe handed her the hardcover book of her's, she nodded, taking the book from him. He closed the door behind them.

An instant phone call flashed on his cellphone.

'Unknown.'

"Hello," he answered.

"We have a job for you."

"A job?" Joe pinched the bridge of his nose. "What am I supposed to do?"

"That's for us to know and for you to find out. I'm texting you the address, you have 30 minutes and don't be late, the call ended, Joe grabbed his keys and headed out the door.

Next chapter is already finished, I can't believe I forgot about it! Only reason I remember this story is from the season 12 finale when Joe Hill asked Jamie about his father and if things would have been different with his dad if had known he had a son and this is my version. Review please!
