Scribe: A Prequel

How Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger became Dramione.

"Malfoy, I want you to know that I want to be here as much as you want to be here-"

"I don't want to be here."

"I know, which is why I am saying that for the two hours we have to be here, I suggest we call a temporary truce. I'd say that we call a truce, as in a proper one, but I know that someone like you would not consent to-"

"Someone like me? What's that supposed to mean?"

"You know exactly what I mean, Malfoy. It's not my fault that your arm is broken-"

"No, it's that bloody Hagrid's, him and his stupid, bloody chicken.."

"It's your fault that you didn't listen to him! He warned you!"

"Well, it's not my fault that I don't understand what he's saying!"

"Well, you could have at least tried to! Who says I do?"

".. You don't?"

"No! I have to think about it too!"

"… Really?"

"Yes."

"Wow. Granger. I didn't know that."

"Well, now you do. Can we get on with it, please? I need to study for my Arithmancy exam as well, you know. It's not as if I asked to be here, Professor McGonagall could have gotten anyone to do it, why me? I most certainly did not envision my day to be spent writing out your Divinations examination for you!"

"It's called scribing. It's a nice word."

"Draco Malfoy, of all people. She could have asked Pansy, or someone else. Like Goyle."

"Please, Granger, Goyle can't even write. Do you think that Professor McGonagall would let him scribe for me?"

"That is most certainly not my problem. Can we get on with it now, please? Like I said, I have to study for Arithmancy!"

"Okay. Umm. I don't know how to do this question."

"WHAT! Well, I'm not going to tell you."

"Leave it blank. Let's go to the next o-"

"You can't just leave it blank! You have to fill it in with something!"

"I can't think. You make something up!"

"What! I'm not going to make anything up! I don't 'make things up'! My grades are based on a comfortable balance of revision, research and reading. The act of something as… as… The act of simply guessing in your exams is just not good enough! Furthermore, you're not even guessing, you're making it up! Which means lying! And- mmpf!"

"…"

"…"

"What was that for?"

"I couldn't think of any other way to shut you up."

"Well! You could have asked politely, or something, not just smash your li- mmpf."

"…"

"…"

"I'm still angry with you."

"Sticks and stones, love."
