Chapter 581: Beaulieu Manor
Thursday, March 2nd, Evening
He sat at his desk, staring at the computer screen. No longer did it just say, "the fuck". He has been typing out a few paragraphs to work out the treatment. The typical images of ravens and water filled his description. He wasn't as formulaic as Clive or Nicholas, but his stories had a rhythm. He looked at a picture on his desk, a picture of his muse, the person on his desk to a picture of his muse, who always believed in his art as he did theirs.
The sounds of his smartphone broke the silence in the room. The sounds of Robert Johnson's Sweet Home Chicago echoed in his ears. Lucas turned from his computer and grabbed his phone.
"Hello, Kay, how are you?" Lucas asked.
"Hi Dad, how are you?" Kay asked.
"I'm good; you did answer my question," Lucas said.
"Are you writing again?" Kay asked.
"As a matter of fact, I'm working on the treatment for my new book," Lucas said.
"That's good; it must feel strange to get back at it," Kay said.
"Yeah, probably as strange as when you started shooting again," Lucas said.
"Speaking of which, the doctors seem to think all the hard work is paying off; my shoulder seems to be getting stronger," Kay said.
"That's great to hear, Kay," Lucas said.
"Maybe, Europe will look at me again," Kay said.
"I heard you had offers overseas before," Lucas said.
"Russia, but ever since, well, certain incidents, I won't even entertain playing there," Kay said.
"I can understand that," Lucas said.
"So, how is Sawyer doing? Is she still chomping at the bit?" Kay asked.
"Your sister is doing well, and yes, she's still chomping at the bit. She's taking on hobbies to distract her, but something happened recently," Lucas said.
"What happened?" Kay asked.
"You remember her friend Gareth?" Lucas asked.
"That kind of geeky kid you used to live next to?" Kay asked.
"Yeah, him," Lucas said.
"According to Ellie, he's crushing on Sawyer," Kay said.
"So, you still gossip with your sister?" Lucas asked.
"Only about family," Kay said.
"Well, it seems he ended his friendship with Sawyer," Lucas said.
"What? Why?" Kay asked.
"According to people in the know, it's because Sawyer won't reciprocate his feelings," Lucas said.
"Hmmm," Kay said.
"Yeah, other than that, nothing too crazy here," Lucas said.
"That's good," Kay said.
"So, why did you really call?" Lucas asked.
"What do you mean, Dad?" Kay asked.
"Kay, I've always known when your avoiding a subject," Lucas said.
"Oh yeah! Like when?" Kay asked.
"Like you're coming out, I know you were dating Connie long before you came out to us," Lucas said.
"Name another time," Kay said.
"When you wanted to play basketball, now stop avoiding the subject," Lucas said.
"I see," Kay said.
"Kay," Lucas said.
There was a long silence. Lucas could hear Kay breathing on the other end. Finally, she sighed.
"Clay called me," Kay said.
"Did Chicago cut you?" Lucas asked.
"No, they didn't cut me," Kay said.
"So, was it interest from Europe?" Lucas asked.
"No, not yet," Kay said.
"Tell me, Kay," Lucas said.
"It will be announced in the next few days if I pass the physical," Kay said.
"Kay, what are or aren't you telling me?" Lucas asked.
"Chicago traded me," Kay said.
"Traded you to where?" Lucas asked.
"To Connecticut," Kay said.
"Well, it's kind of a homecoming, and Angela's there now. You've always had success when you play with Angela," Lucas said.
"I've been trying to get away from that. Can only do something when on a team with family," Kay said.
"Kay, you're a role player; play your role. How many other women would love to be in your shoes? There are only 144 jobs in the WNBA, and you have one," Lucas said.
"You've never talked to me this way before," Kay said.
"You've always had aunts or siblings to talk sense into you, but none of them are here, so I have to pull your head out of your ass," Lucas said.
"What do I do, Dad?" Kay asked.
"Does Ivy know?" Lucas asked.
"She does," Kay said.
"How did she react?" Lucas asked.
"She didn't say much," Kay said.
"What are you going to do with your relationship?" Lucas asked.
"I don't know," Kay said.
"I would suggest figure that out," Lucas said.
"Is that it?" Kay asked.
"You should know by now that isn't simple," Lucas said.
"I do," Kay said.
"Figure out what you're doing in that before you move," Lucas said.
"Yes, Dad," Kay said.
Lucas sighed, "Good," he said.
Kay also sighed, "Anything else?" she asked.
"Get in contact with Angela and your grandparents and at least give them the courtesy that you're showing up," Lucas said.
"Yes, Dad," Kay said.
Lucas sighed and looked at the time, "I need sleep big time the next few days," he said.
"Okay, good night, Dad," Kay said.
"Good night, Kay," Lucas said, and once the phone disconnected, he shook his head.
