Chapter 610: The Commons

Wednesday, March 8th, Afternoon

She came out of the hallway and looked across The Commons. Spotting two young women off in a corner talking, she walked over to them. About halfway, she brushed her ginger red bangs out of her eyes as they had fallen loose and gotten in the way.

"Brett," Shannon Rothenburg, the older of the two and a cheerleader, said.

"Brett," Joce Allen-Travis, the other young woman, said.

"Hi, how are you doing?" Brett asked.

"Good, and you?" Shannon asked.

"What's up?" Joce asked.

"Did any of you know about Garvan and Felicia Watt?" Brett asked.

"Felicia Watt?" Shannon asked.

"I guess you're not putting out," Joce said.

"Joce, that's not called for," Shannon said.

"Well, Brett isn't putting out, or Garvan wouldn't have strayed and especially with Felicia Watt," Joce said.

"It's still not nice to say," Shannon said.

"A hoe is a hoe," Joce said.

"I don't think this is helping Brett," Shannon said.

Joce nodded and looked at Brett, "What do you need from us?" she asked.

"Did you know about them?" Brett asked.

"No, I didn't; Felicia and I aren't even close in social circles," Shannon said.

"Oh, no, I can't stand either of them," Joce said.

"I see," Brett said.

Shannon nodded. Joce looked at Brett, "What are you going to do?" Joce asked.

"Do?" Brett asked.

"Joce?" Shannon asked.

"You can't let this stand; you need to make an example of him," Joce said.

"Joce, you're talking about revenge," Shannon said.

"Never cross a lady," Joce said.

"Whatever happened to not showing that this is bothering you?" Shannon asked.

"That may have worked for your grandma, but not for a modern woman," Joce said.

"What are you suggesting? I cut off his balls?" Brett asked.

"No, Brett, you have too much going for you for jail," Shannon said.

"Yeah, don't literally cut them off," Joce said.

"What do you mean, Joce?" Brett asked.

"Make him feel like how small a man he is and show the whole school," Joce said.

"How do you know how small a person he is?" Shannon asked.

"I heard Felicia complaining about her latest in gym class," Joce said.

"So, you know?" Brett asked, "You lied."

"No, I just knew she had a new bike," Joce said.

"You're worried if Alexis knew?" Shannon asked.

Brett nodded.

"I don't think she knew; that's not Alexis," Shannon said.

"How do you know?" Brett asked.

"We've known each other how long?" Shannon asked, "Quiet, Joce, you've said enough."

"Too long," Brett said.

"Yeah, Alexis respects you; if she knew, she'd be in your face telling you, and Alexis is too honest; she can't lie," Shannon said.

Brett nodded, "Yeah," she said.

"You've already talked to Alexis, haven't you?" Shannon asked.

"Yes," Brett said.

"So, what are you going to do?" Shannon asked.

"Do?" Brett asked.

"Joce is right in this; what he is doing can't stand," Shannon said.

"Unless you're into it," Joce said, "But power must be re-established."

"I don't know what to do," Brett said.

"I'd Miranda him," Joce said.

"What?" Brett asked.

"Joce, quiet," Shannon said.

"What do you mean by that?" Brett asked.

"Talk to your Aunt Bobbi," Shannon said.

"You're the second person today to tell me that," Brett said.

"She'll have ideas," Shannon said.

"I also heard about this thing called The Cabal, I asked my mom about it, and she said, well, basically, don't worry about it," Brett said.

"I would suggest talking to your stepmom," Shannon said.

"Why?" Brett asked.

"She went to high school about the same time," Shannon said.

"Oh," Brett said.

Shannon's smartphone buzzed; she picked it up and looked at it. "Sorry, it's my Aunt Jessa; I have to get this," she said.

Shannon and Joce walked away. Brett watched as Shannon shoo'ed Joce away. Brett shrugged, reset her bags, and walked out of the school.

With a sigh, she walked toward her car. Baylee Miller and Avril Popova, her teammates and best friends, waited by her car.

"Well?" Avril asked.

"Neither knew anything, but Shannon suggested to talk to Aunt Bobbi and Mama Chase," Brett said.

"Good of a place to start as any," Avril said.

"So, where do we go from here?" Baylee asked.

"I drop y'all off, and I go to work," Brett said.

"That's it?" Baylee asked.

"For now," Brett said.

"Get in the back, Bay," Avril said.

"Why?" Baylee asked; Avril just gave her a look, and Baylee nodded. After they were in the car, they drove off.
