Vic arrived at the hospital still being held by Travis, her entire team was in the waiting room, they looked at her the moment she walked in.
" Vic?" Jen was the first to go to her and hug her.
"Jen, how is he? How bad is it?" Vic asked worriedly.
"We don't know yet, we're waiting for Dr. Pierce."
Vic nodded in response and ran a hand through her curls, she didn't mind the prying eyes of her team, the only thing that mattered at that moment was Lucas.
She needed to know how he was, she had spent the morning blaming him for not showing up at the restaurant when something serious could have happened to him, Vic was feeling guilty, that was supposed to be the happiest day of her life, the day that their lives were just beginning.
"He tried to call you." Sullivan said, breaking the silence of the room.
Vic lifted her tear-streaked eyes to him.
" What?"
"Luke, he tried to call you to explain what happened."
Vic let out a sigh and hid her face in her hands so no one would see her crying.
"He'll be fine, I'm sure." Travis gently rubbed her back to try to calm her down.
"Why didn't you answer your cell phone? Did my brother ignore medical advice and put his own health at risk because you couldn't answer your cell phone?" Jennifer asked in an accusatory tone, she was blaming Vic and Vic was also blaming herself for not answering her cell.
Vic bit her bottom lip in a failed attempt to stop the tears from running down her cheeks, she didn't know what to say at that moment, just that it was true, Vic didn't answer her cell because she was upset with Lucas.
Dr. Pierce approached them at that moment while the rest of Vic's team waited in a corner.
"I have news about Chief Ripley's condition." Vic held her breath, hoping Maggie would say that Lucas was going to be okay. "Unfortunately it's not good news, Chief Ripley has inhaled hydrofluoric acid which has caused his calcium levels to drop, the treatment isn't working and I'm quite worried about his heart and lungs."
What does that mean?" Jennifer was the first to break the silence and ask.
"It means I can't operate on his aortic stenosis." Maggie explained.
Everyone was silent in that room, everyone was thinking the same, the important thing was Lucas being okay, Vic wasn't minding the looks of the rest of the team, attentive, following her every step trying to understand at least half of what was happening, she didn't care if she was going to lose her job, she couldn't lose the love of her life.
"And now?" Jennifer asked, her voice low and shaky, but it was enough to be heard in that silent room.
"Unfortunately, it's time to say goodbye." Maggie said.
No one in that room could believe what they had just heard, say goodbye? What did that mean? That Lucas was going to die? Jennifer was the first to break down and cry in Sullivan's arms who quickly comforted her.
Vic felt her heart stop, she couldn't breathe, a bad feeling came over her, the love of her life was going to die, the father of the baby she was now carrying, Vic couldn't lose him, Vic couldn't lose Lucas, she couldn't, she didn't wanted to live without him, she needed him to live, to breathe, Vic had never felt this way about anyone.
A few hours had passed, Jennifer and Sullivan said goodbye to Lucas. Now it was Vic's turn, she wanted to talk to Lucas, she needed to see him.
