Chapter 626: Chase

Saturday, March 11th, Afternoon

In the stands, she watched her stepdaughter warm up for the game. Chase remembered when she was on court level watching Huck warm up as well. Chase looked at her husband, watching his oldest prepare for her last high school game. Huck's face was a mask of stoic concentration. Chase always found Huck hard to read when he wanted to be, and when it came to Brett and basketball, he was always a mask of stone.

Chase looked down to the court and quickly spotted Brett; her ginger red hair made her stand out. Chase, every so often, would glance over to Huck to see him and the hair he gave to his daughter. Of his five children, Brett was the only one that got red hair. Like many people in Huck's family, she never could give him a redhead child, as Ashlyn did.

Huck turned to face Chase. He raised an eyebrow at Chase. She tilted her head; Huck sat up and looked at Chase.

"You're getting jealous again," Huck said in a low voice so as not to be heard.

"I'm not," Chase said.

"Chase, we've been married for how long? I have an idea of what you're thinking," Huck said.

"I was watching Brett during warm-ups," Chase said.

"You always think about it when you watch Brett," Huck said.

"Fair, I thought about it a little," Chase said.

"I've told you, the color of our children's hair doesn't matter to me," Huck said.

"But your ex-gave you Brett," Chase said.

"Yeah, but I married and had children with you," Huck said.

"Yeah, what do you think about the chance for Tree Hill in this game?" Chase asked.

"I don't know much about Northwest Guildford, but from what I heard, this should be a good game," Huck said, "And don't change the subject."

"What were we talking about?" Chase asked.

"You're obsessed with having a red-haired child," Huck said.

"This is not the time or place," Chase said.

"Why?" Huck asked.

"I have to be careful with what I say. We have to be careful," Chase said.

"Why?" Huck asked.

"The company we keep," Chase said.

"I see your point," Huck said, "I thought you love Brett."

"I do," Chase said, "I fell in love with her when I first met her as a little girl."

"But why are you obsessed with her red hair?" Huck asked.

"It's Brett," Chase said.

"Now, I am confused," Huck said.

"I wanted another version of Brett, right down to her red hair," Chase said.

"Why would you want that?" Huck asked.

Chase looked sheepishly, "Well, for one, she's such a good person; why wouldn't we want another like her? As for the red hair, I thought it would be easier as they grew up. But they all got my hair color," Chase said.

"That should be expected," Huck said.

"What does that mean?" Chase asked.

"Look at your niece and nephews; they have got your sister's hair color, and the genes are strong in your family," Huck said.

Chase nodded, "Yeah, have they started the game yet?" she asked.

Huck shook his head, "No, not yet," he said.

Chase huffed; she always had a bit of impatience. She looked over at her mom. Brooke looked down to the court, not paying attention to Chase and Huck. Chase noticed a short brunette walking down the aisle with a man behind her. Chase canted her head, wondering who the man was.

"I didn't expect you to make it," Brooke said.

"It was a bit hairy, but we made it," Fallon Stafford, Chase's stepsister, said.

"We? Did Trin come?" Brooke asked.

"No, I brought someone I wanted you to meet," Fallon said.

"Oh really?" Brooke asked.

"Yeah, did the game start yet?" Fallon asked.

"No, but sit down, please," Brooke said.

"I got these tickets as fast as I could and were the last in the section," Fallon said.

"The game is getting started; make your introductions already," Chase said.

"Why such a rush, Chase?" Fallon asked.

"My daughter is about to play the biggest game in her life so far," Chase said.

"Fallon just makes the introduction," Brooke said.

"Brooke, it can wait," Fallon said.

"Don't get smart with me, Missy," Brooke said.

"Yes, Brooke," Fallon said.

Brooke smiled proudly and looked at Fallon, "So, go on, do it," she said.

"Okay, okay, the salty one is my oldest sister, Chase, the tall redhead next to her is her husband, Huck, and this woman next to me is my mom, Brooke," Fallon said.

"Hi," Chase said.

Huck nodded, "Hello," he said.

"Hi," Brooke said.

"Everyone, this is Grant, Grant Coyle," Fallon said.

"You made me sound like James Bond," Grant said.

"You could be," Fallon said.

Grant smiled and waved, "Hi, everyone," he said.

"Hi, how long will you be in town?" Brooke asked.

"Just until Tuesday; Grant is heading back tomorrow night," Fallon said.

"We'll have to have dinner tomorrow," Brooke said.

"Okay, we're staying at Beaulieu," Fallon said.

"I know; I had your room made up," Brooke said.

"Thank you," Fallon said.

"You're welcome, we'll talk again, but the game is about to start," Brooke said.

Fallon nodded and turned to the court.
