Chapter 630: In the Stands

Saturday, March 11th, Afternoon

From her place in the stands, she watched the game. Out of the habit of watching films, she picked apart the quarter of basketball that was playing out before her. She shook her head and laughed when she saw a basketball bounce off the head of the Northwest Guilford power forward.

"Are you making fun of that poor player?" Karen asked.

"No, but I know how it happened," Angela said.

"She wasn't paying attention," Karen said.

"Yes, exactly, and I know why," Angela said.

"How did that happen?" Karen asked.

"Brett talked to her and distracted her," Angela said.

"How do you know that?" Karen asked.

"I taught her that," Angela said.

"Angela, you're not a trash talker, are you?" Karen asked.

"Yes, and always have been," Angela said.

"My word, I didn't raise you that way," Karen said.

"I'm surprised you didn't know; I'm rather known for it," Angela said.

"Well, Angela, how could you?" Karen asked.

"Mom, I'm thirty-two, almost thirty-three, I've not been a little girl for quite a while, and I'm not a virgin anymore unless you think Jess just showed up on my doorstep," Angela said.

"Don't get smart with me; I can still put you over my knee," Karen said.

Angela chuckled, "Mom, we're here for the game," she said.

"What's your take on it?" Karen asked.

"They're feeling each other out, probing for weaknesses, like boxers at the beginning of the match," Angela said.

"Lucas isn't normally like this," Karen said.

"True, but he's never faced Northwest Guilford before," Angela said.

"Still, I never knew Lucas to be so, so, I don't know, cautious," Karen said.

Angela nodded, "I know, but I think he has something brewing," she said.

"What would that be?" Karen asked.

"I think an ambush," Angela said.

"Angela!" Karen said.

"That's what I am thinking, hoping," Angela said.

Angela's smartphone buzzed in her pocket.

"Who is that?" Karen asked.

"I don't know, but I have to check; it might be Jess," Angela said.

"True," Karen said.

Angela pulled out her smartphone and looked at the screen. Angela raised her eyebrow.

Kay: Can we talk?

Angela: Sure.

Kay: When you return to Connecticut, could you come to see me?

Angela: Why don't you come to Greenwich? Everyone would be glad to see you.

Kay: Are you sure?

Angela: Yes, of course. We would love to see you and Izzy again.

Kay: Just me, no Ivy.

Angela: No, Ivy? Why?

Kay: I moved to Connecticut.

Angela: Ivy didn't come with?

Kay: No, Ivy wanted to stay in Chicago with her family.

Angela: Oh, I'm so sorry, Kay.

Kay: Thanks.

Angela: No problem, so even more reason to come over for dinner.

Kay: Is Jess with you?

Angela: No, she's over a friend's.

Kay: Oh, okay, are you going to the championship game?

Angela: Yes, already at the game.

Kay: Has it started yet?

Angela: Yes.

Kay: Where in the game are they?

Angela: End of the first.

Kay: What's the score?

Angela: Seven, All.

Kay: Seven all? Defensive game?

Angela: They're feeling each other out.

Kay: That's not my dad.

Angela: I know.

Kay: What's going on?

Angela: He never faced Northwest Guilford.

Kay: What are you thinking is the next move?

Angela: I think it's going to be an ambush.

Kay: Now that sounds like my dad.

Angela: Okay, the second quarter is about to begin; I'll let my mom know you want to come over for dinner.

Kay: K.

Angela: TTYS.

Angela turned to Karen. "Kay's living in Connecticut now and wants to come over for dinner," Angela said.

"Just Kay, no Ivy," Angela said.

"Oh no! What happened? They were so great together," Karen said.

"I guess Ivy didn't want to move," Angela said.

"Ah, poor Kay, I really thought she found a keeper with Ivy," Karen said.

"I thought it was a great fit as well," Angela said.

"Only thing confusing was Ivy would call Kay Karen also," Karen said.

"Yeah, and it confused me too; the second quarter is about to begin," Angela said.

Karen nodded.
