Chapter 632: On the Court
Saturday, March 11th, Afternoon
(Song Lyrics in italics)
She walked back onto the court and looked over her teammates. She was taking her position alongside the Northwest Guilford power forward; they looked each other over.
"I'm back, Michael," Brett said.
"It's Me-shell," Tennent said.
"Whatever you say, Michael," Brett said.
"Why can't you say my name, right?" Tennent asked.
Whoa
It's unforgettable
Whoa
The whistle sounded, and the second quarter started. Brett drifted away and waited for the ball to come into the game. As the ball went to Tennent, Brett took a deep breath, counted to five, and then broke on the ball. She broke up the pass with her left hand and drove the ball toward the hardwood. The ball bounced, and Brett twisted free from a few converging people and secured the ball.
Another change is coming
A separation from defiant
(To self-reliant baby)
I feel the weather breaking
It's turning rain into fire
(To take it higher baby)
[Pre-Chorus 1]
With blind eyes open wide
I'm seeing it
Brett twisted again, bounced the ball, and twisted towards the Northwest Guilford hoop. Kicking into another gear, she broke from the scrum at center court. There was no one in front of her. Brett moved forward, and once in the paint, she made her final adjustments, then left the floor for a layup. The finger roll spun the ball, which carried the ball into the hoop.
Landing on the court, Brett turned and started to run down the court. She passed by a few Northwest Guilford players as she went toward the Tree Hill side of the court. Brett looked at Avril and shrugged.
"Showing off?" Avril asked.
"Not really," Brett said.
"I can't believe they are keeping Michael on you," Avril said.
"You mean, Me-Shell," Brett said with a laugh.
"Yeah," Avril said.
"I wonder that, too," Brett said.
"Keep this up, and they'll put someone else on you," Avril said.
"Yeah, and here they come," Brett said.
"Got ya!" Avril said as they spread out to pick up their players.
Brett blocked out Tennent as the ball was passed around. When the ball came around the horn towards Tennent, Brett reached out and deflected the ball away from Tennent. The ball rolled off towards the arch. Someone picked up the ball and started to pass it along.
I feel a rise inside me
It's untouchable (Whoa)
Like breathing fire in me
(Whoa) It's unforgettable
It wasn't a successful turnover, but it broke up the offensive play. Northwest Guilford had to start back up, and they were moving the ball around. Brett kept close to Tennent and looked over her shoulder at the play.
"Get any closer; you're going to have to buy me dinner," Brett said.
"Funny, very funny, oh sorry, not funny," Tennent said.
"Whatever, Michael," Brett said.
"It's, Me-Shell," Michael said.
"Whatever, but I'm gone," Brett said, sidestepped, and intercepted the pass. Brett twisted free, dribbled once, dribbled twice, and sent an outlet pass to Baylee. Baylee caught the ball and raced down the court, a pure fast break. Baylee pushed down the court for a layup and two points.
My river's overflowing
Into an endless sea of changes
(And rearranges baby)
I wanna break it open
I'm gonna take it to define it
(And realign it baby)
Baylee returned to the crowd, and Brett gave Baylee a high five. They started to set up their defense for the next possession. Brett watched as Northwest Guilford set up their offense and advanced down the court.
With blind eyes open wide
I'm seeing it
A lifeless life never comes alive
(I'm waiting)
Brett picked up Tennent and wanted to keep the moment up. Watching her player and the ball, she noticed they were trying to push the ball to who Flannery was guarding. They must think Flannery was the weakest link. Brett just did her job and tried to keep her player covered.
That was when the referee called the play dead, a foul on Flannery. Brett shook her head as she lined up at the lane. Bounce, bounce, ball up for a point. Brett shook her head. One more shot with a live ball. Would they try and miss it? The bounce, bounce, shot followed, and the ball bricked off the hoop. Bodies collided as they were going for the ball.
Avril came up with the ball, then passed it off to Baylee. Baylee turned up the court and passed it off to Faye. That was when Baylee joined the other three girls. Brett was right behind Flannery when Faye pushed the ball further down the court with a pass to Flannery. Flannery received the ball and kept pushing down the court.
I feel a rise inside me
It's untouchable (Whoa)
Like breathing fire in me
(Whoa) It's unforgettable
I feel a rise inside me
It's untouchable (Whoa)
I'm feeling higher
It's unforgettable
Avril shook her head as Brett passed by. "Can y'all at least wait for me?" Avril asked.
"It's a fast-paced offense; you have to keep up," Brett said cheekily.
"I'm trying," Avril said as she turned around to play defense.
As the team set up, Brett glanced to the sideline to see Eva and Jade waiting to come into the game at the next whistle. Is it that late into the game already? Maybe, it was Jade's hand that they pulled her earlier.
I'm getting higher (Higher, higher)
I'm coming alive, I'm coming alive
I'm feeling higher (Higher, higher)
I'm coming alive, I'm coming alive
Brett turned to see where Tennent was and drifted over her way.
"Hello, Sweetie," Brett said.
"Sweetie, now?" Tennent said.
"Isn't that what your dates call you?" Brett asked.
"Why would you ask that?" Tennent asked.
"Well, since I can't remember your name, I figure I call you what your dates call you," Brett said.
"Now, I'm confused," Tennent said.
"Well, you know the name they call you, so they don't accidentally call you the name of their side piece," Brett said.
"They don't do that," Tennent said.
"Oh, so you're the side piece," Brett said.
(I feel a rise inside me)
(It's untouchable, whoa)
Like breathing fire in me
(Oh-Oh) It's unforgettable
I feel a rise inside me
It's untouchable (Whoa)
I'm feeling higher
It's unforgettable
Tennent went to hip-check Brett. With a quick move, Brett dodged, which put Tennent out of position for the incoming pass. Brett wasn't; she got the ball and turned up the court on her fast break. Brett was free and clear for a layup and two more points.
As Brett headed back down the court, she passed Tennent.
"Thank you, Sweetie," Brett said and kept jogging by.
"Fuck you," Tennent said.
"Not my type, Sweetie," Brett said, went to play defense, and didn't notice Tennent's ears getting red.
(Whoa)
It's unforgettable
(Whoa)
It's unforgettable
