Chapter 13: A Car Carrying a Time Bomb
Time passes...
Right when the timer struck 12:00, the bomb that had been delivered to Tonomura Kouzou's house exploded, injuring the recipient.
Two hours later, at 14:00, the delivered bomb exploded in Saeki Kazuhiko's apartment, also injuring the recipient.
Meanwhile...
"Wait, Candy!" Misawa Mao ran after her poodle, Candy.
Said puppy turned the corner and leapt into the open backdoor of a Fox Delivery truck.
"Candy..." Mao puttered, the truck then driving off.
In front of Poirot...
"How late is the Beika Library open again?" Ayumi asked. "I wonder if we'll make it in time."
"Ayumi-nee-chan!" Mao wailed, running up to Ayumi. "Candy's in trouble."
"Mao, what happened?" Ayumi blinked. "Candy jumped into a delivery truck and left?"
"Onee-chan, I don't know what to do." Mao cried.
"Don't worry." Mitsuhiko assured.
"We, the Detective Boys, will definitely help you find her for you." Genta added.
"That's not what the Detective Boys'..." Conan protested, Ayumi pulling Mao off with Mitsuhiko and Genta in tow.
"Let's go to work." Haibara informed.
In a side street...
"Isn't that the truck?" Genta spotted a parked truck by the roadside.
"Yeah, the one with the fox logo." Mao confirmed. "Candy." she climbed into the back of the truck.
"What the..." Chiba gaped, running in with the driver.
"Detective Chiba?" Conan blinked.
"She's not here." Genta replied.
"Looks like she got into another truck." Mitsuhiko noted.
"Detective Chiba," Conan voiced. "Is there some case going on?"
"Chiba." Takagi called out. "Nothing on my end. How's it here? Conan?"
"There's a case?" Conan repeated.
"Yeah..." Takagi stammered. "Kinda... anyway, it's dangerous for kids to be here, so hurry home now. In the third district, they've just seized another truck." he whispered to Chiba. "Let's go."
"You guys, wait here for a second." Conan instructed the others. "Ran-nee-chan?" he made a call to the Mouri Detective Agency after he and Haibara turned the corner. "What's Kogoro-oji-san doing right now? If that's the case, it's okay." he sweatdropped, hearing the groaning in the background. "It's nothing. See ya."
In the Police HQ...
"This is Megure." Megure took the call.
"Inspector, this is Mouri." using Mouri's voice via the voice changer, Conan made the call.
"I'm a little busy right now." Megure responded.
"Is it concerning the delivery case?" Mouri asked. "I saw Detectives Takagi and Chiba investigating. So, what kind of case is it? If I can assist in anyway whatsoever..."
"Actually, Mouri, there's been two incidents since early afternoon." Megure relented. "It's a serial bombing case."
"I see." Conan noted, after Megure explained everything. "That's why he used a delivery truck."
"But things had gone from back to worse." Megure admitted. "Currently, we're searching for the truck, but as of now, the delivery truck carrying the bomb hasn't been found." he added, after explaining that one of the trucks had been hijacked by a pair of robbers beforehand.
"By the way, where was the truck hijacked?" Conan asked.
"It was the residential area of District 3 in Beika City." Megure answered.
"If I get some information, I'll relay it to you." Conan promised. "Excuse me." he hung up.
In the side street...
"How long are you going to be there, Conan?" Genta complained.
"Please, you two." Ayumi pleaded.
"Of course we'll look for her." Conan replied.
"Mao, where exactly did Candy get on the truck?" Haibara asked.
"Here." Mao led the Detective Boys to where Candy jumped onto the truck. "This is where Candy got into that fox truck."
"Then, she turned that corner and you lost of her soon after, right?" Conan stated.
"But don't you think it's kinda of pointless coming back here?" Genta wondered.
"But at lease we know in which direction they're headed." Haibara pointed out.
"The road on the right is one-way." Conan smiled. "And the road on the left is under construction. The cross streets here aren't wide enough for a delivery truck to drive through. Which means..."
"They went straight down this road." Mitsuhiko look up ahead to the main street.
"But which way did they go?" Genta frowned.
"This way." Haibara led the group off.
On an overhead bridge...
"Found it." Conan grinned, using his Telescopic Lenses to track down the hijacked truck. "Three hundred meters straight ahead."
On the pavement...
"No way." Genta exclaimed, the kids were about to catch up when the truck drove off into a side street.
On the side street...
"I can't see it anymore." Mitsuhiko noted, the group now running down the side street.
"Did you wait long?" Professor Agasa pulled in beside the children, Conan having called him earlier.
"They might have gone into a side road again." Haibara noted, Professor Agasa stopping at a junction.
"What now?" Professor Agasa looked at Conan. "It's set to explode at 4PM, right? Only forty minutes left."
"Explode?" Genta, Mitsuhiko and Ayumi exclaimed.
"Professor..." Conan deathpanned.
"They didn't know?" Professor Agasa gaped.
"Now it's come to this, we've no choice but to tell them." Haibara sighed.
"At four, the time bomb will explode?" the others shouted after Conan explained the situation.
"What will happen to Candy?" Mao sobbed.
"Since we know the license plate number, why don't they hurry up and set up checkpoints?" Genta demanded.
"The radio." Mitsuhiko panicked. "How about contacting them through the radio? Tell them 'It's loaded with bombs, so it's dangerous.'"
"I'm sure they took some precautions." Haibara explained. "But in reality, there are a lot of Fox Delivery trucks currently running in Tokyo, so finding the right one would be difficult."
"Besides, from the start, it seems the culprits have been listening in to the police radio." Conan reasoned. "If we put checkpoints or talk to them on the radio, they might change vehicles somewhere, then that would be... you guys, wait in the car." he instructed, an idea coming to him. "Professor, stay on standby so we can leave fast." alighting from the Beetle, he used the voice changer and made a call. "It's Mouri. Inspector, if I'm not mistaken, those two are listening to the police radio, correct? If you would, please do exactly as I say."
In the Police HQ...
"Got it." Megure sighed. "Contact the command center with an urgent message. Contact Takagi and Chiba as well."
On the streets...
"Found it." Ayumi beamed, the two robbers were using the street directory in the truck's glove compartment to get away from the set up checkpoints.
"As expected from Conan." Mitsuhiko praised. "How did you manage to do that?"
"I asked Kogoro-oji-san to tell Inspector Megure to leak fake checkpoints." Conan grinned.
"So you cleared one road nad lured them into it." Haibara realized.
"Fox Delivery truck right there, stop." Chiba shouted over the loudspeaker as Takagi pulled in.
"Watch out." Conan warned when Kaniyama Ginji tossed the delivery boxes out of the truck to hinder their pursuers.
"Not here." Chiba searched through the boxes. "Or here..."
"The bomb is still inside the delivery truck." Takagi gaped.
"Professor, open up the truck." Conan shouted.
"Hurry, only 12 minutes left." Professor Agasa retrieved the Turbo Engine Skateboard.
"Not this either." Conan leapt onto the back of the truck. "So, you're Candy?" he spotted the barking poodle.
"What are you doing, kid?" Kaniyama spotted Conan.
"Found it." Conan walked over to the box Candy was barking at. "Guys, drive to somewhere that's out in the open. This is a bomb."
"Bomb?" Ebisawa Kingo and Kaniyama echoed.
"Like we'll believe that." Ebisawa scoffed.
"It's true." Conan insisted. "Two bombs have already been sent by delivery truck and there's been two victims. This is the last one. It's set to go off in a few minutes."
"Kid, grab onto something." Ebisawa made his decision. "Ginji, map."
"Go there." Conan pointed out the canal.
With less than ten seconds left, Conan tossed the package into the water.
