Deciding to take a new line of questioning with Pete's earlier suggestion in mind, Mike decided to find out more about Jacob Goldman's brother.
"Mrs. Goldman, did your husband have any friends or family members that could have been in trouble or perhaps led him into a dangerous situation?"
Mrs. Goldman sat quietly, ostensibly studying how she should answer. "No, not that I am aware."
That was enough for Pete to hear. "Julie, what about David? Did Jacob mention him lately?"
Mrs. Goldman remained quiet again. "No. We haven't heard from David in years. We don't talk about David."
Mike jumped in. "Mrs. Goldman, we want to ensure we are uncovering every lead. If there is something you aren't telling us, please let us be the judge of whether it is essential to our case."
The young widow nodded her head slowly. "What has Pete told you about David?" she asked.
"I'm assuming this is the middle brother?" Mike looked at both. "Except for the fact that the brother has lived in San Francisco, Officer Miller has told us very little."
For a brief moment, Mrs. Goldman opened up. "David moved to San Francisco several years ago. I must admit, I wondered if that call was from David and that Jacob went out there for some reason. But he would have told me this. We have no secrets."
"Julie, perhaps he didn't want to worry you," Pete added.
Grabbing his notepad, Steve confirmed, "Are you sure David Goldman still lives in San Francisco? Do you have a phone number or an address?"
Mrs. Goldman moved slightly, trying to think about where that information would be.
"Julie, do you want me to grab your address book?" the second friend asked.
Julie nodded, "yes, thank you".
A few moments later, the friend handed the book to Steve, opened to the entry of David Goldman.
"Here you go…Inspector. I can't say that this is the most recent address, but at least you'll have some place to start."
"Thank you," Steve replied quietly, feeling a flush to his face again. He quickly jotted the brother's information in his notepad.
"And you are?" Mike asked, wanting to make note off all who in attendance.
"Beverly Isaacs. A friend of the family…and a former teacher of the Inspector," she added with a smile. Looking down at Steve, she added, "I wasn't sure if you remembered me."
Realizing the gravity of the situation with Mrs. Goldman, Steve regained his composure and simply answered, "Yes, ma'am."
With a slight smile, Beverly shut the address book and returned to her chair next to Mrs. Goldman. The widow turned to Beth and nodded.
Beth proceeded to address Steve. "Pete told us that Jacob was your teacher a long time ago. We are a tight group of educators and truth be told, we were quite happy to hear that one of our former students would be at least connected to the case in San Francisco."
"Yes, ma'am," Steve said again. "Mike and I will do our absolute best to uncover what happened to Mr. Goldman. But with that, can you tell us about David Goldman?"
Beverly piped up and finally let the secret out. "David is a liar and a thief!"
