Mike and Steve were surprised at the forcefulness of Beverly's assertion. The forty-something brunette was at the moment a clear force to be reckoned with. Steve opted to not make eye direct contact, but instead reached for his notebook, flipped a page and prepared to write while Mike began his questioning.

"Ms. Isaacs, could you please elaborate?" Mike asked calmly.

Beverly paused to control her breathing and the room went quiet. Pete jumped in with what he knew. "The Goldman boys were raised in the family business."

"Wasn't it jewelry?" Steve asked, remembering the storefront with the Goldman name.

"It is now, of course. But decades ago, is was in the business of metallurgical assay analysis. There's all sorts of old time equipment in the back of Goldman's jewelry store. The Goldmans were among the first in the area and always considered the best at assaying. But once the mining here panned out, so to speak, they broadened to become a bit of a pawn shop. There, they switched their primary business to evaluating the quality of jewels, watches and other gold and silver products. After awhile - as their inventory built - they transitioned to selling jewelry and fine silverware," Pete added.

Mike, not knowing whether to be annoyed or intrigued by the history lesson, pressed for more information. "So these boys grew up in an environment where they knew how to recognize fine jewelry and gold. Are you implying that David did something illegal with jewels or gold?"

It was now Julie's turn. While Beverly, Pete and even Beth were never found of David Goldman, she felt it time to lead the discussion. "Pete said there was old equipment in the back of the store. There were also a couple of old safes and a large vault. David became a bit of an expert with safes and vaults," Julie added.

"He had sticky fingers," Beverly volunteered.

"Why did he leave the area? Was there some sort of trouble?" Steve asked.

"It started out as a teen lark. David would sneak into the store, open a vault and steal a small piece of jewelry. It wasn't enough for his father to notice, but it would be enough for him to raise some quick pocket money. He would travel to Sacramento and basically fence it," Beverly added. "The old man finally caught him and threatened to disown him."

Julie added, "Didn't matter though, David kept doing it. Eventually he was thrown out of the house and effectively out of town. I don't know exactly what happened to him. Jacob didn't say much about him, but..."

Pete interrupted, "It's been rumored that David ended up working for some tough guys in San Francisco."

"Mob?" Steve asked.

"That I can't swear to, but I think he's in pretty deep," Pete said.

"Okay then," Mike closed. "Thank you for that. We'll see if we can locate David Goldman or perhaps his boss and see what we can find out. Was there anything else you can think of? Anything at the school?"

Julie shook her head. "There is always something going on, but not anything that could escalate to what happened."

Mike stood up. "Still, I think I'd like to visit where your husband worked and also where he was supposed to be going that evening."

Steve and Pete took the cue and stood. Pete took the lead, "Julie, again, if you need anything, please let me know." Mike and Steve followed paying their respects to her and then gave a brief nod to her friends.

Steve caught the eye of Beverly who in turn flashed a coy grin. For the third time, Steve felt his cheeks flush. Leaving the house, the trio walked to the car. All the while Mike looked at Steve without speaking, making the younger man like he just had a target placed on his back.
