"Mr. Goldman, we need to address the elephant in the room, so to speak," Mike began. "First of all, condolences on the loss of your brother. This is never easy to hear even if you haven't been in touch for a while."

Goldman nodded his head slowly. "Thank you," he replied.

"Mr. Goldman, we're aware of activities you have engaged in during, let's say, your earlier years here in San Francisco. You have a clean record as far as the police is concerned, but we have heard you run with a powerful group, shall we say."

Both detectives watched Goldman's reaction. "I guess you've talked to people in Tyler. Yes, I'm the black sheep of the family."

"Would any of your current - or past for that matter - cohorts have a reason to go after you?" Steve asked.

Goldman scratched his head for a moment. "Look, I'm not sure what you were told. I'm an assayer for certain materials and that job is, I guess you would call it, on demand. I'm a bit of a consultant and I don't 'run' with any group."

Mike smiled, "We were told you have a way with vaults and safes..."

"Some of my work is remote but some of it can indeed be onsite to where I need to access through, let's say, formerly concealed means." A hint of a wry smile appeared on the man's face.

"We're not investigating your activities, Mr. Goldman. That's not the job for homicide. But we do want to know if you have made any enemies through the years who might go after your brother or other family in retaliation. We're looking for all the leads we can get to bring your brother's killer to justice," Steve responded.

Goldman nodded his head slowly. "Honestly, I appreciate that. I wish I could help in that regard. Yes, there are some powerful people that I've met in my time here, but I cannot fathom anyone going after me. After all, I'm just a small cog in...well...the scheme of things."

"So no one? How about back in Tyler? Anyone you rubbed the wrong way?" Mike asked. "Or anyone that perhaps would have had a vendetta against your brother?"

"I've rubbed lots of people back home the wrong way. That's why I'm here. But I haven't been a part of that community in a long time," he answered.

"Any...old...girlfriends, perhaps?" Mike asked.

Goldman chuckled for a moment. "You talked to Beverly Isaacs? Yeah, she'd have cause to wring my neck, but she'd never harm a fly. And she'd certain never hurt Jacob. She was my girl for a while. I got into a little trouble not long after we got here and unfortunately, she had to pay the price. But she went back home and has rebuilt her life. I helped her out in the beginning - bet she didn't tell you that - I felt bad about what happened to her."

"Her time in the pen?" Steve asked.

"Yeah, she didn't deserve that. And the people I ran with back then were a lot different. I was afraid to ruffle feathers, so I kept quiet. But that was so long ago..."
