Chapter 53: The Scarlet Truth

At Raiha Pass...

"That boy..." Jodie echoed. "You mean, Conan-kun?"

"Yeah." Akai nodded. "In order to secure me without resistance, they're trying to capture one of my close associates. To maintain secrecy, they came while you are out driving and isolated from the other FBI agents. They'd knew you'd come to Raiha Pass since you were beginning to doubt my death. Camel, the 200-meter straight is after the next right turn." he loaded his shotgun."

"I'll keep the car's steering wheel and speed steady once we make the turn." Camel assured.

"This is crazy." Jodie rebuked. "The car's shaking because the tier is losing air. You can't possibly aim a gun."

"It's not a problem." Akai anchored his back against the seat. "I can account for regular movement."

"The right turn." Camel barked.

"I'm counting on you, Camel." Akai took aim.

"The straight." Camel warned.

"Roger." Akai responded.

"One, two." Camel started to count down. "Three, four."

In an instant, Akai fired his shot, deflating the front wheel of the Public Security Bureau agents' car.

"They're not following." Jodie noted. "We must have lost them."

"Way to go, Akai-san." Camel praised.

"Camel, turn back." Akai instructed.

In the Kudo household...

"Akai fired a gun?" Amuro echoed in shock. "What about the pursuit?"

"Most of the cars aren't in any condition to drive." the Public Security Bureau agent reported.

"Anything will do." Amuro barked. "If any of them still work, go after him. If we let him escape, there's no telling where he'll disappear to next."

"Could you be quiet?" Okiya coughed. "The owner of this house just won an award and is about to make a speech. Not that I've ever met him."

At Raiha Pass...

"But we can't pursue him under these circumstances." Amuro's subordinate protested.

"Are you okay?" Akai asked, Camel pulling up beside the stranded Public Security Bureau agents.

"Akai..." the agent on the phone with Amuro stammered.

"Is Akai there?" Amuro barked down the phone.

"Don't blame me." Akai rebuked. "You're the ones who came after us. If I hadn't done that, people would've died. But I have a proposal. Will you trade that phone for the gun I just fired?"

"What's going on?" Amuro snapped. "What's the situation? Answer me."

"It's been a while, Bourbon." Akai voiced. "Wait, you go by Amuro Tooru now. To make up for ruining your friends' cars, I have a gift for you. It's the gun Kusuda Rikumichi used to shoot himself. If you investigate how he acquired it, you might find something. This is Japan. You're better suited for it than the FBI."

"You know who I am?" Amuro hissed.

"I suspected you since you were part of the Organization." Akai admitted. "But letting it slip to the kid that your nickname is 'Zero' was a mistake, Furuya Rei-kun. Not many names produce the nickname 'Zero'. It was easy to find you, especially since I'm also acquainted to Dr Moreno's most prized protégé. You probably meant to turn me over to them, raise your prestige, and get closer to the Organization. But let me tell you something: don't get distracted by what's in front of you and pursue the wrong prey. I'd rather not have you as an enemy. Also, I still feel sorry about what happened to him. The FBI Director had Dr Moreno perform a hushed-up autopsy on him and had the report classified under his authority. I do believe she still holds onto the unclassified report. Let's go, Camel." he tossed the phone back to the Public Security Bureau agent.

"Furuya-san, what do we do?" Amuro's subordinate asked. "Should we go after him?"

"No." Amuro gave the order. "Now that they know who we are, it's dangerous to pursue them any further."

In the Kudo household...

"Sorry." Amuro ended the call and turned to his host. "It seems I was mistaken. I'd better go. Before I go, can I ask you something?" he wondered. "Why did you let a suspicious man like myself enter the house?"

"You seemed determined to talk whether I wanted to or not." Okiya coughed. "I've met the novel illustrator of this house's owner a couple of times when she came over to hand in her completed illustrations. She's a rather... intriguing young lady."

"She indeed is." Amuro concurred.

At Raiha Pass...

"So, who were they?" Jodie asked, now that they were in the clear. "I'm not following."

"They work for someone else, but just like us, they are wolves trying to take a bite out of them." Akai replied. "I really don't want to use her to curtail him, but if we have no choice..." he muttered.

In the Kudo household...

"No bugs inside the house." Okiya used a tracker around the Kudo bungalow once Amuro and his men retreated. "It's over." he shouted up the staircase.

"I'm so tired." Conan moaned in front of the monitors before him. "You were supposed to follow the plan."

"It went well, though." Okiya stated, entering the room. "For the most part, I spoke using the voice changer in this mask. When I was told to remove it or faced tough questions, I coughed twice and you answered through the speaker embedded inside the device. When I wanted to speak, I coughed once. With all the coughing, he couldn't have told the difference." he pulled off his disguise to reveal Yusaku. "We did a great job. I think I deserve the Best Supporting Actor award. "Though, the woman working onscreen right now is most probably deserving of the award. You should be grateful to your mother. After wearing my disguise, she took a flight to the Macademy Awards ceremony to play me. So, is the FBI agent I stood in for coming back here?"

"Yeah." Conan looked at Professor Agasa's house. "There's someone he needs to protect."

The next day...

"It's perfect." Yukiko gushed, Akai reapplying Okiya Subaru's guise back on himself. "You managed to disguised yourself. I won't need to come every week to check on you anymore."

"Shu...?" Jodie gawked.

"Is that really you, Akai-san?" even Camel was stunned.

"This is still my voice, right?" Okiya stated. "But when I use this choker voice changer, I become Okiya Subaru." he activated the choker.

Meanwhile...

"I told you." Vermouth burst out laughing after Amuro reported his conclusions. "There's no way Akai's alive."

"It seems I didn't need to worry." Amuro agreed.

"You'd better not do this kind of thing again." Vermouth cautioned.

"I won't." Amuro assured. "But if something comes up, I'd appreciate your help. After all, I'm one of a few people who know your secret. I'm sure the members of the Organization would be shocked to learn you're the boss'..."

"Keep talking and I'll blow your brains all over the windshield." Vermouth threatened, pressing the barrel of her gun against Amuro's temple.

"That's not a good idea." Amuro refuted. "It won't be easy to clean up."

"It's not a problem." Vermouth assured. "This isn't my car."

"I didn't mean my brains." Amuro corrected. "Didn't I tell you? If I die, your secrets will be leaked to the Organization."

"That's right." Vermouth relented.

"Don't worry." Amuro assured. "Your secret is safe with me. No one will find out."

"No one?" Vermouth echoed. "Didn't the FBI suspect you after you picked a fight with them?"

"Without any proof, there's nothing they can do to me." Amuro reminded. "It's within my expectations."

"Going forward, you should probably avoid acting out of line." Vermouth warned. "Gin seemed concerned about rats in the Organization. Hondo, the FBI's Akai and that man makes three. You know, the secret police agent who was erased before we got his name. I think his codename was..."

"Scotch." Amuro supplied.

Shortly afterwards...

"Welcome to..." Amuro spoke, hearing the bell on Café Poirot ring.

"Liar." Conan pouted.

"You're the one to talk." Amuro fired back.

"Are you and Mizuno-san alright?" Conan inquired, albeit worried. "From what I heard from Detective Sato and Inspector Shiratori, she's been using the shooting range she's a member at as anger management."

"We... aren't exactly talking." Amuro chuckled nervously.

"Maybe she's waiting for you to apologize." Conan suggested.

"Most likely." Amuro sighed, raking a hand over his hair. "Guess I should put my pride down once in a while." he mused after Conan took off the school. "Me taking romantic advice from a kid... what is this world coming to?"
